I'm so relieved. I got washed and dressed to go over a garage just outside my apartment complex to get some cigs, just in case the power went out (we are due some major storms tonight thanks to a tropical storm in the Gulf) and I could not charge my e-cig batteries. After getting ready I check my wallet, my credit card was missing!!!!!

After turning the house upside down I think to look in my online banking. The last time I used my card outside the home was at that very place, the garage. So I go over there and ask the man behind the glass if he'd picked up a left credit card in my name...sure enough he had it, I had left it on a shelf next to the machine. Phew, I showed him some ID and he gave it to me. So then I was able to buy some cigs with it.

I had no cash and my debit card had been replaced for the umpteenth time due to fraud. And I am sure I had put it in a drawer but can't find it to activate it, not that I wanted too anyway. So other than the credit card, I had no money.

The credit card I had is used in quite a few direct debits I had set up to pay my bills online so would have been a pain to have reported it stolen, waited for a new one and would have had to have logged into those places and re-done them.

This does not beat leaving my wallet on top of my car and finding it all intact by the roadside on a 5 mile stretch of tarmac on a side strip, in which I at the time had my Greencard, Soc Seq card, Drivers Licence and C Cards etc, intact. (not any more are they)

But, it comes second.

Anyone else lost loads of essential stuff like that and got it back?

I smoked on and off since I was 16. I quit in favor of vaping 6 years ago. My smokers cough disappeared. Fortunately I actually prefer vaping to smoking, but I admit, I still need my nicotine fix.

You didn't to think to ask the man at the garage whether he'd seen your debit card as well?

Before you celebrate too much, maybe you should wait until you get your next credit card statement. Anyone in your neighborhood driving a new car lately?

    Just asking.

I'm Ok about my debit card, it is "somewhere" within my home and not activated. I can see my bank account and cards, in's and outs in real-time via the online banking. it arrived about a month ago.

What intrigues me is, I always used my debit card sparingly and never online. But there you go, I check my account almost daily, and every few months, all of a sudden, some rouge payments, often out of state have occurred for stuff, like fuel or restaurants or stuff from stores.. I call, they cancel it and reimburse the account. (often the transactions fail anyway) and send a new one, and then the cycle begins again. I would use it to pay for groceries in a supermarket and fuel, that's about it, but occasionally, restaurants. That's the only thing I can think of where it could get compromised. Either that or people are wandering around with these scanners and stealing the info that way.

So much so that I buy everything now with my credit card and touch wood, no problems, indeed, hardly ever had any problems with my credit cards.

On top of that, both have a chip but the debit card requires a 4 digit pin to be typed in, does this get stolen with these scanners too?

Most intriguing, but for now, it's credit cards or cash only, no debit cards. I suppose that's ok though because I can get cashback on my credit card.

Since the covid-19 issue, I've been using contact-less card payments in stores - and most outlets have raised their maximum payment limits. If I ever lose or mislay a card, anyone who finds it can rack up a potentially huge bill before I find out.

        .
We keep our credit cards in sleeves that protect them from scanners. Cheap security. Here's a link.

        https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

By the way, I once left my wallet in a restaurant with over $1,000 in cash in it. It had fallen out of my pocket on the way out. I went back, and the guy behind the counter gave it back to me....I was sooooo excited...until I saw that all the cash was missing. Oh well, I considered it a "Stupid tax" They left all the cards and drivers licence.

Now, for decades, I check my wallet dozens of times a day as a reflex. Just to make sure it's there. Even though now there is no cash in it, just cards.

We've never had anyone steal our identity of use our cards. But my Google Pay Per Click account was charged tens of thousands of dollars over a couple of months that didn't show up anywhere (except debits from our checking account) Someone had been siphoning money from our account, and it didn't show up on any report. Google had a hard time finding it as well. But they did, and credited my account.

I had mentioned that bit before where I had left my wallet on top of my car, drove off and it had everything in it, id, credit cards, cash and drivers licence, Green Card, Social Security Card etc, the prospect of replacing these things seemed impossible, you needed at least one of them to replace the others. But, we drove back down the route home and amazingly, we found it all intact. in a pullover strip of tarmac on a 5 mile route, that was amazing luck. My wallet now has one credit card, Drivers Licence in it these days. Hard lesson learned.

Glad you got your money back from Google. Losing that amount of money and getting it reimbursed must have been a huge relief.

Yes, one of those scanner sleeves is a good idea.

Google deprived me of around 200 a month in Adsense earnings where in 2010, they changed their algorithms and my small selection of sites vanished off the front page for various keywords, not to mention Amazon earnings.

It all happened in a minute. The guy on the phone said something like "We just found the problem. Someone started a phantom account under your account, and we couldn't see it. We refunded all the money we took out of your account" And it was over that fast.

The only way we knew there was a problem was that our PPC account suddenly tripled in how much we spent, without me changing any of my bids.

Ahhh, in the UK, we often call Gas Stations Garages or Petrol Stations. I forgot to do the American translation.
