Working From Home For An Employer, Your Experiences

Now it should be that all the people here are successful Internet Entrepreneurs and do this anyway but we know its not always the case. Many of you have day jobs and do IM part time and many people have been forced to work from home due to this lock-down.

I am one such person. I work in A/P for a large community college. The college has been closed for months. Most of the students are doing their courses online now. So whats it like to make this transition?

My experience: Initially it takes a bit of getting used too. You get programs you need, access to the work system via VPN. I have one computer screen as opposed to two at work. It is really useful to have two, but you can get by with one, you quickly get a way of working in place.

No commute to work and back, you can get up two minutes before you start if you want too, more time to sleep. I play relaxing music all day and Vape, not something you could ever do at work.

99.9% of communication is now via email with occasional text messaging. If a meeting is required we get on an online Webex. The work is getting done. I am more up to date with my stuff than if I was in the office, less distractions. Less stress overall.

Anyone else have experiences to share on this.

I work from home Mark, and not because l have to, but because l can. Or l have been concentrating more on the investment side of things than flyers, although through being tired and respondent of my present situation in this part of the country, l am looking into other long term projects to keep my mind active, or not concentrate on the outside world as much.

I have my own online business that for the most part integrates with offline clients.

There are four of us "staffers" wherein I run things (at least I think I do) and three full-time employees. Two of the three now work at home. They used to work in the office as it was their choice to work at home or work in the office and even a little of both. Up to them.

The third "staffer" works in the office full-time. She says she prefers to separate work life and home life. Personally, I think it is her way of getting out of the house after spending years raising three children as a single mom.

Last month I asked them all in a conference call if there were any problems adjusting or anything I could do to make a positive change.

They all must have expected the question and had pre-planned an answer and action...

"MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS." and disconnected.

    God love em.

Me and my wife both used to work from home during this pandemic. I am doing my classes online via zoom and Microsoft teams. My wife is a export analyst and she is also doing perfectly fine. How ever I missed the real class room. But what to do in this times, We need to adopt and move on. You need a goo internet connection if you start working from home,

  • Working from home is not that fun that was in the office. There is lethargy and exhaustion at home. Work also has to be done overtime.

My wife has actually found that she's *more* productive working from home (or, at the least, not any less productive).

One smaller observation she related to me (she formerly worked in Midtown in a medium sized office; now at home) that I found interesting was that videoconferenced meetings (via Zoom et al) somehow allow for *more* "one person conversational dominance" than in-person meetings. Granted, a single speaker can can certainly command the floor when the meeting is taking place live, but there are perhaps more social cues and pressures to sort of discourage the behavior.

To that end, I thought this half-baked idea from Eugene Wei was interesting (if not exactly realistic

"To prevent one person from dominating Zoom meetings, we need Zoom for the Peloton. To speak, you have to generate some minimum output. As you talk, the resistance gradually increases until you are totally out of breath.

"I'm also partial to a video game-style talk meter that gradually depletes as you talk, and if it hits zero you get muted and have to wait until it replenishes.

Having become self-unemployed about a decade ago, the pandemic has had very little effect on my "work" behaviour. It has effected my income, so I'm having to be a lot tighter with money than normal, but since the avenues for spending have been curtailed, the effect hasn't been too dramatic.

One of the first things I discovered upon leaving the corporate world was how much money I could save by simply not having a job. No more having to buy suits, jackets, trousers, shirts, shoes (always Dr Martin's), and all the other things that go with looking like you belong in a major financial institution (monthly haircuts, daily shaving, toiletries, deodorant, etc.). All of that adds up to a fair amount of chump change over the course of a year, and a hell of a lot over the space of a "career".

As I type this, I am wearing a t-shirt, shorts and undies. That's it. I haven't had a haircut since my nephew's wedding in 2016. I haven't shaved since 2017. So, on the surface at least it looks like I've successfully transitioned my career from a "wheeler/dealer" to that of "extra in a low budget biker movie".

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

I happen to know that ZZ Top are currently recruiting and Duck Dynasty is looking for some extended family members.

I have worked from home since March, no haircut since then, beginning to look like a slightly better preserved version of Robert Plant. Shave once a week. Working pretty much the whole time in Boxer Shorts.

We do it a little differently in Australia Jeffery, (little old ladys on street corners with paper bags, wearing a dirty Pokemon outfit with hood, and mumbling about football trivia).

Working pretty much the whole time in Boxer Shorts.

Made me realize how normal it seems now to see my family walking through the house with a shirt/tie/shorts or full makeup/hair done, business blouse/jacket/jewelry and raggy jeans or shorts.

I'm the best dressed person in the house some days - and I wear mostly sweats this time of year.

  • I'm also a college teacher, and in some ways working from home is much easier. Especially because it gives me more time to work on my online marketing game without the distractions of social life in the teacher's staff room. lol

In the beginning it was tough, but now I have several systems in place that make things go smoothly. :-)
