Family history

Have any of you bought into the family history and then found out how wrong it was after DNA geology or paying for a professional family tree deal?

My family's fake history was pretty tame and boring with a few high lights here and there. My real family history is crazy impressive and long-documented. And according to the DNA stuff we have several bloodlines nobody even knew about.
Also, my family always said we are a pretty small family, and that's not true, the dna place I used kicked out 1500 2nd,3rd, and 4 th cousins. I even recognize a few names.

Families are nuts.

    My cousin, Mike, is a geneticist and loves tracking family history. Two years ago he called to see if I would be willing to get my dna done and allow him access to the results.

    No biggie so I did it as did 2-3 others who are first cousins.

    Mike had a reason - turns out my paternal great grandfather was not who we thought it was. My grandfather left home permanently at 14 - never went back, never talked about his family. My Grandmother told me he had a very rough childhood and it hurt him to talk about it - so we didn't.

    I had told mike of my curiosity about that branch of the family and what might have happened to cause a 14 yr old leave his family permanently. He started looking into it and the results were surprising.

    My Grandfather's mother died when he was four years of age - and his five brothers and sisters were quite a bit older. His father (my great grandfather) had a reputation as a violent, mean man....when he died the rest of family refused to let him be buried in the family cemetery.


    Turns out my DNA and and mike's don't match the lineage.... Mike kept at it and what he found is that my REAL Great Grandfather was a man of Spanish descent who lived 2-3 miles from my Great Grandfather's properly. Somehow he and my Great Grandmother got together - which in those times was shocking.

    An affair? a rape? we'll never know but chances are the beatings and other trauma my grandfather endured as a child were from a man who knew this was not HIS son.

    Mike has met many of these far flung long lost relatives but I haven't wanted to meet them...I just wanted to know my Grandfather's story....

      My family is so wierd that I will have to reach out to a few of them.
      Surprisingly, some live as close as an hour and a half away.

    I definitely heard about getting to know the family tree through DNA geology but this is the first time I am reading about it and now I really want to get my family history tracked.
