Wonder Woman 1984, New Movie Out December 25th

I thought Wonder Woman, the first movie, was the Best Super Hero Movie ever made. Just about perfect.

So what of the second movie, a long time coming, same female director. No official reviews yet but a few people claim to have seen it, I will post one below. This is a definite watch for me and will probably be on the pay per view streaming sites.

So do you agree or disagree with my appraisal, is it Wonder Woman or the Avengers last movie perhaps. What was your favorite Super Hero of all time so far?

Here's the alleged review:

"Just saw the movie in its ENTIRETY!
To say that we were floored and taken aback by the surprise ending would be an understatement! What Patty Jenkins did is beyond a masterpiece and leaves no doubt that the DC universe, despite Covid-19, is gonna kick Marvel's ass in 2021!
WW1984......
Hmmmm---WW2011
Wait until the credits are ending for a MIND BLOWING segue into the IADC!!!!
YOU'RE welcome, America!"

I'm such a downer - my first thought in reading that review was 'dude needs to get a life'.

Second thought - good publicist, paid review

Mark, it'll be on HBO Max on Christmas day.

While I love the first Avengers and the first Guardians of the Galaxy for what they are, the best comic book movie is Logan. I honestly believe it should've been at least nominated for best picture.

And I say that having seen Wonder Woman. It was good, but not great, in my opinion.

Logan was in a class by itself.

Guardians and Wonder Woman were so exceptional to me because they were so hard to make.

GOTG took a comic book that nobody was reading, and made it into a movie that nobody was waiting to see. And they made it wildly entertaining.

Wonder Woman was so great (to me) because until that movie, there wasn't a great superhero movie with a female lead. I suspect they are harder to make. The trailers for the new Wonder Woman movie look great. Was she swinging with her lasso...from lightning bolts? Amazing to see.

Most Superhero movies I see have great moments, but not consistent throughout.

For example, the warehouse Batman fight scene in Batman V Superman was the best Batman scene I've ever seen. But it wasn't a great movie.

Seeing Captain America face down the army of Thanos in Avengers Endgame was deeply moving to me, but it was also a great movie.

And of course the end scene of Logan....where the cross on his grave is turned into an X......wow. But of course it was also a phenomenal movie.

I hope the next round of Marvel movies are as good as we expect.

Added later; Sorry, I forgot to insult you. You just didn't think Wonder Woman was great,. because she's taller than you.

Well that's a bummer, only streaming on HBO Max. You have to sign up and pay $14.99 a month for that. Will have to wait for it to be on Netflix or Prime etc. I suppose I could sign up for one month and cancel.

I get HBO Max for free due to having an AT&T phone plan. You also get it free if you have AT&T broadband. However, a sign up and cancel isn't a bad idea...

I´m very interested in seeing that movie, because DC is starting to do some things better, like the movie of Shazam was in my opinion amazing. Personally I´m more of a Marvel fan here, because of the mistakes that DC has done in the past. I hope this movie is great

Are you not into super heroes?

To me, it's very interesting to see what someone thinks of one of these movies, if they aren't fans of superheroes in the first place. I'm sure it's a different experience.

But I can see where Logan, Guardians Of The Galaxy, the Deadpool movies, and Wonder Woman would just be great movies, even if you weren't fans.

          Especially Logan....Man, what a movie.

I used to be fan. Interests come and go. 2017 was busy time for me and my family, so I missed a lot of movies.

i just watch hugh jackman and many of the other men who have played super heroes .. and the shape they need to get in .. with the amount of tasteless food they need to eat ..and other things they do .. because the body does not want that much muscle ..

and apparently they need to start training 6 month to a year before the film shooting starts

That little girl version of Wonder Woman really sells the scenes she's in.

        I'm not joking..

When I was about 6 years old, and my parent's got me a few comic books, Wonder Woman was one of the characters.

I had a length of clothes line, and a brilliant idea hit me. I put on my underwear and ran around the house trying to lasso (or my 6 years old version of it) everything in the house.

My Dad asked me who I was supposed to be and I said "Superman". Then I showed him the comic and pointed to Wonder Woman.

My Dad left that night and never returned.
(OK, that's a joke. But everything else happened)

The blue panties with the white stars on them? You bet your bootie I still have them on.

                I'm wearing them right now.

In the original comics, there was a lot of bondage, before the Comics Code.
In the comics, Wonder Woman was never a kid. She was created from clay and given life by Zeus.

And a few years ago, she started calling herself Wonder Person.

                One of those isn't true.

I have added it to my library and it says it will record it as soon as it becomes available? Errr, it's December 25th, the release day. Should it not be available now?

Well, it's still not available for me. Perhaps they think well we won't give it to the people who signed up for the 7 day free trial to HBO Max the day before Xmas in case we will cancel it. Not my intention but I bet that's it. When my payment goes through in 5 days then it will magically appear.

I'd say that would be wise on their part - with all the hype around this film I expect the 'free trial' folks are pretty thick this week.

and i could see why there would be trouble if they where not ready for a million people to sign up at once or more .. no one in that chain was prepared .. they though giving a month or months for people to get the service ..

Not sure what you are arguing....not uncommon for a free trial for a service or membership or product to have a limited functionality or scope during the free trial period.

not really arguing .. ..to many people signing up at the last minute .. caused problems with the app.. the people who downloaded the app weeks or months ago.. a small number have had problems playing the movie .. the system was not ready for such a wave of people downloading the app .

Well, l just watched the grueling 2.26 minutes of it, and she does get a few minor wounds, (finally some realism).

And some scenes are dragged out, (thank goodness for fast forward).

And the premise is pretty weak, but it is entertaining enough to sit through it all in one hit, (l usually don't watch it in one hit).

And there is a scene in the end credits that Wonder Woman fans will get, (l looked it up to be sure).

The way these movies go it was entertaining, and is a cross between the Twilight Zone and Superman 2, (Christopher Reeve one).

I just read that the producers didn't want the director to put in the action sequence at the beginning of the movie.

Honestly, to me that was the best scene. A mediocre (but not terrible) movie bookended by a couple dazzling scenes.

I think everyone did their jobs well. It just wasn't a great story.

At one point, Diana Prince is in a truck, and she leaps out of the truck in full Wonder Woman costume. Like magic.

The trailers that came out before the movie showed great promise (at least to me). But they were the best parts of the movie.

The fight scene at the mall was the point where I was completely taken out of the movie.

Wonder Woman can be a majestic character, fighting epic battles...a warrior, an inspiration....or you can play it like Peter Pan.

            Peter Panned this movie.

You must remember that Super Human adversaries are generally difficult to come by to have epic battles with unless you create a world full of them. She had to do domestics to fill her time. WW of course just does a superfast twirl to change costume. A Goddess can do these sort of things. It's not scientifically based like Superman.

Superman must have done something similar in accelerated speed terms and compressed his suit keeping it nicely crease free for later. The question is, where did he put it? I mean, it's not like he was rich on a reporters salary and could buy new ones all the time. I Suspect Superman occasionally crushed a couple of lumps of coal up to make diamonds to supplement his income. Never talked about in the comic books.

First, it is not a mere mortal's costume - it is a super hero costume. Since we are not super heroes we are not qualified to suggest anything related to a super hero's costume.

              "Peter Panned this movie" Ha!

One reason I like most Superhero movies is that I can suspend rational thinking, like watching a cartoon. Mostly, I just go with the action, humor, and effects...maybe an emotional scene or two...and skip the part that it's all impossible.

But there is a matter of consistency. Daffy Duck always survives getting blown up.

In superhero movies, one inconsistency I see constantly is the level of power changing dramatically to fit the scene. One moment the hero can lift a battle ship, the next moment they are fighting a group of thugs, and just holding their own.

Wonder Woman being able to turn things invisible? A clever, but completely inconsistent ability from any source.

It would be like watching a Wonder Woman movie, and she is saved by Bugs Bunny. Completely inconsistent with the entire comic and movie history of the character.

The thing about Superman not being recognized because he wears glasses? The idea that he has to get new clothes each time he changes into Superman?

Of course, these things are ridiculous, just like the premise of the Character. But they are consistent, and we have grown to accept these things as part of the mythos.

In fact, if suddenly, everyone started pointing at Clark Kent, saying "Hey! You look just like Superman!", that would be inconsistent with what we have come to expect.

I just realized that I'm trying to be rational about an irrational subject.

Added later; The DC movies in general (especially the Zack Snyder ones) are really a series of highly impressive visual images, strung together to make a movie....not a story...but a movie.

The latest Wonder Woman movie is an example of that, with just far fewer visual moments. For me, essentially one at the beginning, and one at the end.

One could make a cogent argument that Daffy Duck is a superhero. It's all about context, which is part of what Claude was talking about.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

You are correct about one thing (in the totality of your expansive life): the opening scene was epic. I want to see that movie. Make that.

The rest of the movie was like a ten year old filled out a Mad Libs screen play. Most of these superhero movies are the same movie with little changes here and there. This was like they took the template and said, "Meh, good enough." In fact they might've bought the plot outline in the WSO forum...
Agreed, but l did like the megalomaniac, after countless years of searching, finally got his hands on the Extra out of a Indiana movie, or Twilight Zone curio shop?

The blonde showed promise, (especially since she knew more about artifacts than Wonder Woman) but that quickly went downhill fast with her ending up as a CGI nightmare, without the leash.

The rest was a Superhero Big mack with fries, (which l was expecting) and not even the great start could pull it through.

I wouldn't see this in a theater, since with ad's it would be around three hours, and that is just torture.

Your humor is lost on Claude, and even though he is a stable genius, pretty soon he will have to change that to, Stable, ummm, oh, (what was a saying)!

I think everyone did their jobs well. It just wasn't a great story.

The real mall has been empty since 2017, so all shops where fake, or empty shop areas for the last few years, (brought back to life for the movie)..

The thing about Superman is he would need a toilet made out of diamonds in order to prevent his parents house from being destroyed, when he was a kid.

          I won't mention his bed.

Most cartoon characters are just that, they have an interesting idea, that doesn't work. Even Uncle Scrooge isn't realistic, or who would enjoy swimming about in a giant area full of smelly, tarnished and freezing coins?

Cash on a bed works though.

We lived in a small town - no phone booths. I was in Cincinnati with my young son and as we walked up the street he stopped and stared at a glass phone booth. He said 'see - that's the problem - if clark kent really does change clothes in a phone booth, people would see him taking off his pants'.

He could believe flying, jumping tall buildings, etc....but the pants were a problem.

I had no answer for that.

Superman was able to go so fast as to reverse time by spinning the earth backwards or by moving back in time himself. (don't ask me for a scientific explanation there) So I expect anyone trying to film or photograph him exposing his super parts in a pant change would be unable to due to an inadequate shutter speed in a film or video camera, would just be a blur.

The original Superman comics, from the 40's-60's were very poorly written. They were written for 5 and 6 year olds.

When I saw the "Turning back time by reversing the spin of the Earth", it reminded me of the silliness of Superman as a character.

I remember, as a kid, reading a Superman story where he lost his powers instantly, because he was under a Red Sun. I thought, "Why doesn't he lose his powers when the Sun goes down?"

The artists used to draw Superman with his cape billowing straight behind him...even when he was indoors. I used to wonder where the wind was coming from.

I watched Avengers Endgame last night, again...and was struck with how well it was written, how developed the characters were. Marvel movies are just great movies (generally) that happen to also have superheroes in them. That's the difference, I think.

There were two comic producers of the stories back in the day. The flowing cape depictions were the ones published in A/C comics.

    Watched it.

    Meh.

The plot was hot garbage and the director took a fantastic actor in Pedro Pascal and straight up ruined him - a truly laughable performance.

However, I could watch Gal Gadot read one of Claude's "books" (on mute, of course), so I'll give it 4 stars for scenery alone, -1 star for plot, for a total of 3 stars.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

Lucky you to see it, still have an empty place holder for it

We must all take a step back and remember, this is all comic book stuff, fantasy and not serious drama or real life stuff. It should be taken for what it is, which already transcends our expectations by far.

Quite the opposite. She bled quite a bit. Well, quite a bit for a superhero.

Nope, but it's part of the (stupid) plot. It's as basic and cliché as plots get: find the magical mcguffin.

She got a scratch, yay, but as you said it is part of the comic book narrative, (probably need her DNA to create a new, even superor evil twin, like Superman part 20, or whatever it was did with Supermans hair in the museum).

I may try to watch it out of morbid curiosity, then hang myself.

          A serious question for you.

          Do you still read comics?

Would you rather see the movie or read the comic book series it was taken from?

I haven't read a comic book in probably 20 years. However, now that my son is starting to read and I've brainwashed him into loving the Avengers, I foresee a new period of comic book reading on the horizon.

[Sidebar: my son not only thinks the Avengers are real (and all DC characters makebelieve), but he thinks he's a Junior Avenger.]

I almost always prefer to read the source material and hate the movie adaptation rather than watch the movie and have the author's vision ruined.

It's impressive to me that your son knows the difference between reality and make believe...unless your son is 25 years old, then it's not so impressive.

The reason I asked is that, for whatever reason, I still enjoy 2 hours of reading a run of a good comic book series more than I enjoy any comic book movie.

Same with books. I prefer a good book to the screen adaptation. No idea why.

One thing I noticed is that many movie sequences just don't work well in print. The movie 2012, or any movie where the heroes are constantly on the very brink of death...don't work well in book form, I find. But that's all just personal preference.

Growing up, I was certain I was going to be a famous comic book writer, the Gen X Stan Lee. I still have an entire comic universe of characters in my head.

When I was a kid, my dream was to draw comic books. In fact, when we lived in Cleveland (I was between 5 and 10 years old), there was a comic book artist that lived on the street behind our house. I remember talking to him about comic books, and he would show me some of his work. It wasn't superhero comics, but like Little Lulu and Scrooge McDuck.

The difference is, a pretty girl didn't talk to me, so I ended up selling vacuum cleaners.

By the way, you should still write. I think you'd be good at it.

I just watched Wonder Woman 1984. A tad too cartoony for me, at least compared to the epic the first WW movie was.

But at the beginning? That little girl competing, saying "I can do it" brought tears to my eyes.

But she can fly in 1984 but can't fly in Batman V Superman or Justice League?

There were a few great moments. The opening scene...the end where she is flying through clouds.....the rest was bearable...but I wouldn't watch it again.

Did she need to fly in those two movies, all the action was on the ground. So no.

Not seen it yet still but you need to watch it again to fully appreciate it's greatness.

Agreed the start was good, as was how it ended, (a bit like Harry Potter with more gold).

And yeah, she flew at the military base, (can't get out of the water while holding something otherwise) but could only fly at the end, with the aid.

Seeing how far a megalomaniac will go was the highlight, and kept the movie moving forward, but other scenes, (Museum) where too long.

The first WW, bored me to tears, so l only got half way through that one.

                        This one was more engaging.

Wonder Woman 1984 was so bad that my wife and 12 year old daughter asked me to switch it off.

I just couldn't believe how unbelievable it was. How unfunny Kristen Wig was ugh! and chris pine coming back from the dead omg! ridiculous the whole thing.

Now the cat has bolted, agreed, Chris P, comes back, takes over some poor smuks life, and bores us to tears with dragged out, "1984 is so modern" vibe.

For a movie that drags on for two and a half hours, they could have cut some of the boredom out.

Certainly could have cut the fashion options back.

"What do l wish for,...that this movie is buried in the desert on top of the Atari ET packs".

Sounds interesting. You might want to start a different thread. We're talking about Wonder Woman 1984 in this one.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

        Ahem! Young man!

It's possible he is talking about WW1984.

If you haven't seen the first Wonder Woman movie, this one is far easier to take.

In my opinion, the first Wonder Woman movie was so good, so epic in scope....that it made this current movie look pale in comparison.

Personally, I can't wait for The Snyder Cut of the Justice League movie. It's going to be 4 hours long, and nearly all the humor (and Superman's mustache) are going to be taken out.

It will be on HBOMax in March, I think.

Good Day Sir...I said Good Day!

Yep. It's a real victory that WW84 is the coolest movie in a while. A real testament to Hollywood.

If Ishtar were released today, we'd all be in awe of its amazing storytelling and grand plot.

OK, I have to admit, you're right about that one. Vanity projects like that are seldom good. I remember Steel (with Shaquille O Neal) being particularly bad. But that was before any of the Marvel movies.

Years ago, my Son and I were playing pool. He was beating me pretty consistently. We were both good players, but he was having a good day.

He asked me "Are you really trying to win?"

I said "Absolutely. You're just playing better than I am"

I watched it on an 85 inch screen in full Dolby Atmos. It still stunk on ice.

  • Jus' to say, prolly I would share a punch with Dan Riffle.

Long as there ain't no misladlin', sounds like a perfect plan to follow. Or swallow.

Jus' gotta watch for lemon pips in your teeth, I guess.

I would so love a bathtub fulla punch.

Cleopatra famously had hunny-drenched milk -- but I would wanna hope we moved on since them days of limited exotica.

Hey ... to hell with tubsy punch fulla mere lemons.

I would want halved melons floatin' about my person -- if'n only to compliment my own modest juiciness up top.

    Sliced kumquats!

Plus also an eco-friendly straw ... so I could schloopsy up the pep from a tall glass by my tub.

An' a foamin' spa bubble kinda feel -- to flip the odd grape floatin' around into spontaneous aerial submission.

So yeah those are my needs rn.

Global warmin' an' salvation for all oppressed rodents can wait.

    I am srs.
