One reason I like most Superhero movies is that I can suspend rational thinking, like watching a cartoon. Mostly, I just go with the action, humor, and effects...maybe an emotional scene or two...and skip the part that it's all impossible.


But there is a matter of consistency. Daffy Duck always survives getting blown up.

In superhero movies, one inconsistency I see constantly is the level of power changing dramatically to fit the scene. One moment the hero can lift a battle ship, the next moment they are fighting a group of thugs, and just holding their own.

Wonder Woman being able to turn things invisible? A clever, but completely inconsistent ability from any source.

It would be like watching a Wonder Woman movie, and she is saved by Bugs Bunny. Completely inconsistent with the entire comic and movie history of the character.

The thing about Superman not being recognized because he wears glasses? The idea that he has to get new clothes each time he changes into Superman?

Of course, these things are ridiculous, just like the premise of the Character. But they are consistent, and we have grown to accept these things as part of the mythos.

In fact, if suddenly, everyone started pointing at Clark Kent, saying "Hey! You look just like Superman!", that would be inconsistent with what we have come to expect.

I just realized that I'm trying to be rational about an irrational subject.


Added later; The DC movies in general (especially the Zack Snyder ones) are really a series of highly impressive visual images, strung together to make a movie....not a story...but a movie.

The latest Wonder Woman movie is an example of that, with just far fewer visual moments. For me, essentially one at the beginning, and one at the end.

The original Superman comics, from the 40's-60's were very poorly written. They were written for 5 and 6 year olds.

When I saw the "Turning back time by reversing the spin of the Earth", it reminded me of the silliness of Superman as a character.

I remember, as a kid, reading a Superman story where he lost his powers instantly, because he was under a Red Sun. I thought, "Why doesn't he lose his powers when the Sun goes down?"

The artists used to draw Superman with his cape billowing straight behind him...even when he was indoors. I used to wonder where the wind was coming from.

I watched Avengers Endgame last night, again...and was struck with how well it was written, how developed the characters were. Marvel movies are just great movies (generally) that happen to also have superheroes in them. That's the difference, I think.

It's impressive to me that your son knows the difference between reality and make believe...unless your son is 25 years old, then it's not so impressive.


The reason I asked is that, for whatever reason, I still enjoy 2 hours of reading a run of a good comic book series more than I enjoy any comic book movie.

Same with books. I prefer a good book to the screen adaptation. No idea why.

One thing I noticed is that many movie sequences just don't work well in print. The movie 2012, or any movie where the heroes are constantly on the very brink of death...don't work well in book form, I find. But that's all just personal preference.

My kid thinks that comic book superheroes are stupid...and his bestie loves them.
Listening to them argue about it makes me laugh.

You should get him into Uncle Scrooge Comics, (give him a taste for wealth at a young age).

OK, I have to admit, you're right about that one. Vanity projects like that are seldom good. I remember Steel (with Shaquille O Neal) being particularly bad. But that was before any of the Marvel movies.
