I used to be a drummer back in my youth and once played in a band with Gary Numan's bass player. I quit in my early 20's.

I have a hankering to play again for fun and fitness now that I'm retired but living in a small rental, the only solution is to buy electronic drums so I can plug in headphones or run them through a small amp and speaker at low volume.

I am prepared to pay up to $1,500 for a kit but the choice is daunting, you can get them for as little as $300.00. I know that the snare (and toms) can be bigger the more you pay and you also get 2 hit zones on it and that may apply to the toms as well. So its down to the durability, construction and quality of the sounds triggered and the amount of them. I see that Mesh heads are the way to go.

Anyone ever possessed a kit and can offer some insights?

Have you thought of collecting stamps? Less noise...except for that slurping sound. But maybe the neighbors will think you just have a dog.

By the way, the drum set looks pretty cool. If I heard you play the drums, my first words would be "Not quite my tempo".

Yes if you were that guy being my drum teacher I would impale you with a stick, especially when you say: "There's no such thing as a great job"

I used to collect stamps in my youth, you would never lick a stamp as it would devalue it.

No self respecting stamp would ever let you lick them.

(By the way, I know you don't lick stamps in a stamp collection. But that ruins the joke)

Kraft is a reputable site and Roland a well known brand - those look like FUN.

Frustrating to be in a place where you can't make all the 'music noise' you want but those will help.

Very nice !! I have been a drummer since about 3 years old. So going on 50 years total.

Btw, once a drummer always a drummer so get rid of this "used to be a drummer" jargon

Again, congrats on the purchase as they look fabulous

Aside from a quick bash on some electronic drums in a Best Buy store of all places about 10 years ago I have not played for 40 years. It was good to know back then that although rusty, I had not lost the ability.

These drums and the accessories were incredibly inexpensive for what you get. I now think they are a couple of years old. Boxed as new but old stock. Many of these kits are not supplied with a beater or sticks, and a stool, forget it. So a good little bundle.

Well my drums arrived a while back, let them sit there for a number of days before I did the unboxing which took a while. (such a man of leisure I am) Yesterday I set them up per the step by step chart, that took a long while also. Second time around would be a lot easier.

Today I wired them into the main box and switched on. spent some time fussing around with the positioning of tom's snares cymbals etc, before doing that. Wow, I'm a little rusty.

Without headphones or amplification they are relatively silent, ideal for a rental. Fifteen different kit sounds, enough to keep me occupied.

I think there is some kind of law that says after you retired - everything you do takes triple the time (at least) it would have taken you before you retired?

Your right, five years ago I would have jumped on such a project the same day. Despite walks and vitamins I am physically a little weaker than I used to be and not so driven, a product of age and circumstance. When I was married there was the odd project to do and mowing the lawn etc. Even getting up early to drive to work, now all gone. Even to get up early to sit at my computer at home and do most of the jobs I did at the office has gone.

The virus does not help it must be said, I would have been more active if it was not around. Playing safe takes it's toll.

It's good you live on a farm and an go horse riding and muck in as little or as much as you want. You have a little space to do it in too

Update: Well, possibly, sitting on that drum stool was not good for my back. So I have just ordered a back rest that attaches to the trunk of the stool and a padded memory foam cushion that goes over the stool itself.

Clarification: I don't live on a farm - my friend owns the horse farm where I have free 'rein' so to speak.

However, our house is on several acres so we do have space. I can't imagine how much harder it is to be stuck in an apartment during this pandemic. I don't do apartments well, I'm afraid. In fact, I don't even do subdivisions well. A friend once told me I am 'unique' - I think that's a bit better than 'bat shi* crazy'...but not sure.

We really love our subdivision. I would definitely call it our "forever" home. It has trees in the back ( which is a must for me) and we are close to everything. But I surely understand your perspective. It is nice to have a plot of land with acres to call your own and away from the hub- bub of things. I can see the allurement of that

My apartment is ok, 640 square feet, a little room for a washer/dryer, coat closet, a small living room, kitchen area, small dining area where I have my drums and computer, a reasonable sized bathroom and a bedroom with a walk in closet, even a little balcony. It is more than enough for one and larger than what you may typically get in Europe. You get used to it.

In fact, putting the drums in it makes it look bigger. People say that up to a point, you can put more stuff into a small place, pictures on the walls, mirrors and furniture, scatter rugs etc and it actually makes it look bigger. Aside from a couple of pictures I have bare walls so I am going to buy a load. I also am going to experiment with ambient lighting in the way of LED freestanding lamps which will give you different color settings and some light towers for either side of my computer.

Different zones, lighting and things of interest give the psychological illusion of a lager space. It is something I have learned since living here and now appreciate.

When I used to visit my parents place and home town in the UK, it seemed a small space and took a day or two to re-adjust to the closeness of everything and the size of the house, but you do and become used to it again.

Ah, there's the bad thing, I have a little balcony but it's ground floor, so all I have is views of a bush, parked cars, garages, a few trees and other buildings. Not really desirable for the view and not private.

My place is ok, cosy, I have everything I need. Surprisingly, I get most deliveries to my door aside from USPS mail. I can do what I like with the décor as long as I don't knock any big holes in the walls or start painting it. One thing, throughout the last week, I never lost power but my water pressure was a little down for a day or so, now back up.

How did you fare last week?

Well, our power went out and we tried to persevere for a day or so but wife and kids could not handle it. So we went to her parents and enjoyed a nice 3 days with power and heat. So we fared pretty good with them as a back up

It's a jungle, a concrete one unfortunately. But once I exit the gates, a short hop across a side road and I'm in a complex of shops and restaurants. So have a bakery, hairdressers, H&R block, Chinese Buffet, Subway, Waffle House, Taco Cabana, Garage and a few other places. The one annoying thing, a Kroger used to be there and now it's an empty facia, it moved across the busy main road and down into a dip so a bit of a walk and crossing the road walking is a bit precarious. There are a load of other new stores there as well.

So aside from the lack of green and the Kroger closing, it really is a convenient place to be.
