The Great "New Mattress" Debate

I have been sleeping on a half Queen sized topper (Nikken, full of magnets) on a mattress I got from my old place for over 2 years now. Recently I bought some really expensive Eucalyptus sheets from Sheets and Giggles and took the topper off to put them on so they would fit. It was then I realized...my mattress was shot to hell.

So, I'm in the market for a nice new mattress and will fork out for a new one. A more expensive one. So, I have read about Temperpedic, Purple, Sealy etc but have no knowledge of the relative comfort they will bring.

Any recommendations?

It's a big decision - maybe you should sleep on it.

Stay away from Sterns and Foster they don't last long ! Your back will be begin to bother you are a few months with one of them. Wonder how a Sleep Number bed is they have been advertising for awhile.

Our neighbors tried 3 different mattresses before settling on one. The competition on the high end mattresses is so tough they often have a 100 day return policy or such.

I think she ended up with the sleep number bed but she was furious to learn that a 'try it for 100 days' means you HAVE to keep it for 100 days before you can return it.

I buoght a commercial brand version of temperpedic used in luxury hotels - was recommended by a friend who is a furniture dealer and have been very happy with it for 3 years now. It's the same 5 lb density of tempurpedic but was 3k instead of 5k or something like that. I've been curious about the Purple mattress....be sure to give us a review after you buy one

We replaced our mattress about two years ago. We went back to an expensive Beautyrest Black coil mattress. It cost $$$$$$. Within two weeks, I could barely get out of bed due to back pain.

I took the mattress behind the wood shed and put two bullets in its chest and one in the head.

I had a Purple mattress delivered (for a fraction of the cost) and have slept blissfully every since. Thus, my advice is to try a Purple mattress (they have a 100 night trial) first.

I hear the purple isn't for people who sleep hot.
I've heard that about all of the cushion-type mattresses.

literally, everything has changed over the last ten or fifteen years when it comes to manufacturing and selling mattresses. It's bullshit. More scam than not.

I've spent big money with multiple brands finding the same results.

I gave up and paid a mattress manufacturer to make me a custom dual-sided California King. So far so good.

Also, IMHO, Sealy and the Posturepedic line is as scammy as it gets,
those beds regardless of the price and name are not designed to help people with back problems.

It's just slick marketing combined with predatory sales tactics.

I heard this, too. I bought a cooling mattress cover and haven't had a problem. Your mileage, however, may vary.

  • Gonna query my mattress rn, see what she thinks.

tbh I been too busy with DECOR stuffs -- like do my pillowcases match my Vesuvian kitchen?

An' why I *sob* slippin' plural pillowcases out when I am here on my lonesum c/o yanno?

All I know is, the furnichah don't evah adjust too good too whatevah shape you at.

Which is why intrinsic bendiness pays dividends.

Gotta tellya, whenevah you snooze out on a yogah mat, don't mattah how accommodatin' the sales guys say it is, you get up offah the floor like you been trampled by the Buddha hisself in a momentary rage.

You can kinda stay in the here & now on a momentary (yogah mat enhanced) surface, but parta that is the conscious positionin' of your whatevah.

Conversely, sleepin' got a softer exterior, but you ain't got no clue what is gowin' on.

    What does this tell us?

Mark, I lied to you. It had been awhile since I bought my mattress and I remember it came down to two different brands. I decided to try the cheaper one first and that's the one I stayed with.

The two it came down to were Purple and Nectar. I have a Nectar mattress.

I am of course appalled but not bought yet . I admit I am vying on the side of the Puffy, more expensive but reviews seem to put it at number one at the moment. Nectar had delivery times and customer service issues, not to mention build quality, but glad to hear you are pleased with yours and it's performing well.

    Strange stuff....

Had never heard of 'puffy' so looked it up and read through the site. Then moved on - that was last night....

Within TWO HOURS of visiting the site ....I got an email from service@paypal.com offering me $50 off if I buy a Puffy with paypal.

I'm a contrary sort of person (I'm sure no one here has guessed that) - and I don't like that sort of 'maneuvering'/advertising. It's the first time I've seen an ad from paypal after only visiting a site....how does that work when I did not enter any info on that site?

Edit: Found the answer - it's paypal 'digital advertising alliance' - that allows companies to send alerts to the paypal address as a 'personalized' ad. Had not seen it before but my paypal acct listed 139 companies with the 'ability' to send such ads to me....Running the 'opt out' worked for only 39 of them.....interesting

You can get 5% cash back on Nectar through Rakuten. I checked, but they don't have a Puffy offer.

Ok, ordered the Puffy Lux, got 50 bucks off via Paypal and should get some cash back on my credit card. Hopefully I will shortly be having a good nights sleep and less back pain.

Just think of the electronics I could have bought with that money. Sigh.

You could've bought a Sleep Number Bed and gotten both (along with a mortgage to finance the purchase)...

I have an old mattress to haul away, free, if your interested.

Let's hope Joe finances the purchase.

Given that you had 1,500 to spend on electronics, what would be your current single or multipule choice of items?

$1,500? That doesn't get me a good short throw 4k projector, so I'd probably spec out and build a NAS Plex server. If I had a few hundred left, I'd probably upgrade my turntable.

    Mattress review:

I decided on a Puffy Lux, queen sized a hybrid of a Temperpedic, gel layer and a topper part that sleeps cool, 12 inches thick. No Box Springs. It was the most recommended, It arrived today rolled up in a big box, heavy, 58 pounds. I just about was able to take off my old one and move it somewhere, really heavy and need to get it hauled away

So, with a bit of puffing (or puffying) and panting I took it out of the box and put it on the bed, taking off loads of plastic wrap first, It unfolded itself but was shrunk wrapped. As soon as I liberated it from the shrink wrap it expanded to full size, wow, it is tall (12"), it came with a double length free pillow that was made out of the same material. I had to put 2 pillow cases on it from either end. Now came the acid test, plonked myself down on it. Unlike many mattresses, it was soft but firm and supportive. A real revelation in a brand new mattress. Yet to sleep on it, but they say it is so comfortable from the get go that you may hard pressed to get out of bed. So, I look forward to better sleep and less back problems.

The mattress has 101 a day tryout period, but you have to keep it for 101 days. Free shipping back and refund if not satisfied. Guaranteed for life, for me perhaps 10 years if I'm lucky. Lol.

Thankfully, Uncle Joe Biden will soon be dishing out $1400.00 to everyone, so that just about takes care of it.

I had to wrench myself out of that bed this morning, too comfortable, interestingly, a friend of mine bought a much cheaper, more basic Temperpedic mattress a few years back. Having slept on a traditional mattress for her whole life, it took two weeks to get used to. Now she says it's like sleeping in a feather bed. As to my one, no adjustment was needed,.

I splashed out on some Eucalyptus sheets and pillow cases a few weeks back, not cheap and it was the first time using them. Supposed to be resistant to absorbing sweat and keep you cool or warm as per the ambient temperature as well as being very soft. Although Queen sized they were a little bigger than you would normally get allowing for an easier deployment, including the pillow-cases. So putting one on did cover the long pillow but could not quite fold over one end completely, it was close. So I put the other one on just really to cover the end. First night ever I never had to turn my pillow over to get a cool spot.

So, to sum up, having spared little or no expense for once in my life, gives you a little insight on how the super rich may live and be accustomed too.

You can get just about any of the current Mattresses on Amazon, but not Puffy?

How do you like the eucalyptus sheets? I've used some 'bamboo' (that's what the label says) sheets and they are cool and I like that.

I sprung for a 15 lb. weighted blanket this winter...it has a warm side and a cool side....it's like being a kid again with nice, heavy comforters on a cold night.
