Planned Obsolescence In Just About Everything

From lightbulbs to, cars, to clothes, to computers. This video highlights that things are made to last a shorter time than they could be. Why, of course, because it would reduce sales because they take longer to wear out. Quality is downgraded deliberately. If that's not possible, then manufacturers will change the color and design to entice punters.

The right to repair laws, if they pass, will hopefully address a few of these issues. Apple still charges extortionate rates to repair and no third parties are able to repair the modern ones. If it goes wrong, buy a new one, cheaper.

The light bulb going from tungsten to led is one thing that has addressed the issue, lasting up to 15 years. Interesting video.

    Interesting. Unfortunately it's been going on for decades. The build it cheaper and faster mentality, coupled with so much competitiveness in almost every field of manufacturing, inevitably means quality is going to suffer. It's the consumer who has been instrumental in this change as there is a constant demand for inexpensive goods. Paying a premium for quality and longevity are sadly no longer top of most peoples tick lists. Things were built to last in the old days.

    I wondah whether 'planned obsolescence' is merely a conspiracy theory that caught on, ran, an' embedded itself in our DNA all sneakily replicatorial.

    'Momentum resistance' seems more apt -- for way back then & also for now.

    It would be real cool to get ovah this hurdle before mebbe 2035.

    i understand how it works its what built the middle class after world war 2 ..because because people working in the factories could afford what the factories made ..

    apple and the tech companies who get stuff built by slave workers in China and india ..intentional sabotage their products with patches that hinder performance so people need to buy new stuff ..i have had microsoft updates break computers after a few years ..each update reducing the performance of the computer ..

    but you know if our civilization collapsed now in a few thousand years if human rebound and start digging stuff up they would think there was a worldide cult that worshiped a a god whos symbol was a piece of partly eaten fruit
