I was just remembering a lengthy series of posts here on the forum, 8 or 10 years ago...about Mars One. Remember?

Two guys put up a website, and started accepting applications for people to go to mars. Of course, first they were building a habitat on Earth to test it's viability. But it was going to be 2020 when we were going to colonize Mars. Remember all that?

Of course, other than a website and many interviews...nothing happened. It was all a scam.

Here's the story in Forbes.

I do remember that thread - and trying to search for it on this forum is like a walk down memory lane....old forum names from the past.

Yes, it was a scam, but even if it had not been, how much room would they have to transport all that toilet paper, answer me that, huh?

I miss Frank, and the ongoing advice I was able to give him on those bad computer choice purchases. Jeffery of course, Shane, who has his own forum now and posts his theories to one other person. Many people who I have forgotten the screen names to. Miss them all, except Kurt.

      Nobody misses Kurt.

I'm joking (as were you). I've never had anyone insult me with such finality.

Dan Riffle trades barbs better than anyone I've ever seen. His insults make me smile. But Kurt? His insults are like a train wreck....that catches fire...with no survivors.

He and I trade insults on Facebook. I often wonder what the other people (who don't know we are joking) think.

Dan is full of irritating slights that after a while, can get under your skin if you you let it. Kurt is just outright blatant. Even his cartoon head, looks like it's angry and insulting.

The only time Dan ever irritated me, he wasn't insulting me.

His insults are like poetry. They have an element of style and brevity that shows real skill in the friendly insult. That's why it's easy to trade insults with him. It's like a dance, and we are continually trying to trip the other one.

But if I thought, for one second, that I was actually offending him....I wouldn't do it.

Kurt? Being insulted by Kurt is like getting hit by a truck, and then sinking in quicksand.

The most skilled insulting I've ever read.

You are funny, and skilled at certain forms of humor. But the insult is my favorite.

And my absolute favorite kind of barb is when, in real life (meaning in person), a person handles me with skill. And if they are a young person, it's especially sweet.

It's as if a Judo player half my size threw me with perfect technique. I'd lay there on my back (or on my face), basking in the excellence of how he took me down.

Because to me...it's not about you or me. It's about the technique. The poetry. The effort itself.

          It's hard to explain.

Dan is the poet of slights, he's only a slight guy, and what are his Wordsworth anyway.

Here's an interesting one: What if Mars One was real and we were ready to go, and you were offered and everyone in your family was no more? Would you go, just for the hell of it? It's certainly the ultimate weight loss program, Lol.

why would anyone want to live on mars for any reason. once we can build habitats humans can live on in space and ships in space humans can live on ..and support human life ..that is probably the fastest way to get humanity into space permanently ..

you could mine big space rocks for the materials needed of course their is no reason the guy building rockets is also building a company that can make the mining equipment ..now eventually these drilling machines can be landed on the surface of mars and used to bore tunnels that could be turned into human habitat ..

this is all imagination though ..a what if kind of thing ..

When I hear discussions about living in space, or living on Mars (or any other planet), it brings me back to this idea.......

No matter how bad it gets on Earth, it's cheaper and easier to build habitats on Earth than in space. and easier to change the environment on Earth...no matter how bad we make it, than terraform a planet of moon to support life.

The only reason to start a colony on another planet is to save part of the human race, if the Earth is destroyed by a giant collision.

Another thing to consider. If we went to another planet like Mars, and stayed for 1,000 years, the people living there would become almost a different species than we are. They wouldn't be able to survive on Earth, because of the vastly increased gravity.

And habitats in space? Every habitat built on Earth so far has failed. Even the really huge ones. They all run short of Oxygen and food. The only reason Earth is self sustaining is the vast oceans, and the plants in them that produce Oxygen and absorb CO2.

Would I go to Mars? No. After I got over the thrill of lesser gravity, I'd be stuck with a small group of people I have nothing in common with, and on a planet that wants to kill me.

Would you want to live somewhere that was so hostile that you had to wear a space suit just to walk out your door? Where radiation, poisonous soil, and no air pressure was constantly trying to kill you? It would be like being in prison, with no possibility of parole, or even going outside. After a few days, the novelty of being able to jump up 6 feet would wear off.

No beautiful scenery, no animals, no rivers or oceans, no clouds, no rain...ever, the same scene every day....the same people....

Not for me. And there are problems to be solved before any "off Earth" habitat would work. To me, these problems are insurmountable. And if they aren't insurmountable, it's always easier to build it here than off Earth.
I think much of this talk (even from astrophysicists) is wishful thinking....because the thought of us dying permanently....all of us...forever...is inacceptable, so we tell stories about possibilities.

Would I go with an alien to their planet? Yes, if they were enough like us that we could communicate. I think it would be endlessly fascinating.

i doubt your fascination will last long . once they extracted your consciousness from your human meat sack and sent it to their world and placed it in a body that was adapted to live on that planet ..or they could be convincing you they are doing that ..and just hook you into a simulation that makes you think you are on another planet ..

we humans are limited by what we think is possible ..then we assume we will use new tech the same way we used the tech it will replace ..

"Transferring our consciousness" is an idea that is popular in science fiction. It's also one of the few ideas I hear over and over again, that are impossible. you cannot upload your mind to a computer, or transfer it somewhere else. Your mind is the activity of your brain. It's physical, and brain activity is mostly chemical. You could, given enough knowledge, transfer your brain to another body...I suppose. But you cannot transfer a mind. You can copy the brain, the nerves, the synapses....theoretically copy a mind...maybe even make it conscious. But it's a copy. You can't take a mind out of a body without the brain.

Anyway...The idea of transferring a brain to a body designed to live on another planet is a possibility. Or just bioengineering people to be able to live on a different planet.

That's actually possible. We could (I think) eventually do that here.

I think we are far more limited by the things we think are possible, that really aren't. We can imagine quite a lot. What limits us is our understanding of the "How to do it". And....as depressing as this is, many of things we imagine, really are impossible.

We are limited by our imagination in the sense that we can only imagine up to our capacity to imagine. We are always limited by reality.

For example, bioengineering humans to live on a different planet may work. But that doesn't mean it's desirable. We may have to change the person enough that they are no longer anything like humans.

And I understand the need to try to save our species....but create a different species just so we could put something alive on a different planet? Maybe.

Added later; By the way, have you ever wondered how the transporters work in Star Trek?

They disintegrate you, save the pattern of your body, and put it together (like a very advanced 3D printer) on the other pad.

In other words, they kill you, save your pattern as computer code, and create an exact duplicate of you...wherever you were transported. Of course, the duplicate is unaware of this, as is everyone else.

It would be slightly simpler (and less murdery) if they just duplicated you on the other pad.

                    Weird.

It's very difficult for Dan to fall over when drunk due to his very low center of gravity. He declined the offer to go to Mars lest he be whipped away by one of it's weak dust devils.

Owning a few up to date VR Goggles, We are very close to being able to do that ourselves., if aliens are advanced enough, they could supply us with a simulation of their world including smells and wind etc. A tactile feedback body suit and we are done.

Before you shift off your mortal coil, I think you should try and get a chance to experience the wearing of them. Watch a 4k clip where you can look all around you, up and down etc, try an interaction with a graphical world etc.. I think you would be impressed. I find the rollercoaster rides a little sickening and avoid the horror clips where you get made to jump out of your skin.
