Would You Move To Iceland For A Shorter Work Week?

Yeah, a bit cooler there, but due to an amazingly successful experiment over two years, 2500 workers were selected to work only four days a week for the same pay. Productivity remained the same, people were happier. So now the Icelandic government are rolling this out to all. Coming to the US any time soon, I think not. Lol

No, wouldn't move to Iceland. However, I've worked 4 day-a -week jobs in different states with different employers. I LOVED it as long as the days off were consecutive. Being off fri-sat-sun is great if you have kids....my own fave was wed-thurs-fri off

However, if the days are split I found it doesn't feel at all the same.

Years ago I read 'news' articles predicting '32 hr work weeks' in the US....supposedly the 'dawn of the computer age' was going to take over mundane tasks so we would all work less....we see how that worked out...

The technology is there but that is almost a part time job so instead you reduced the number of employees as you keep the jobs full time

And those who could not get the full time jobs ended up in the gig economy many have the 30-32 hour a week job with side income from different things

Simply strap on, power up, and you're ready to ascend. It sounds really cool for me! I used to leave in Norway so I'm ok with cold weather. But shorter work week don't have to be the only reason to move there.

I don't see why a 4-day work week would be a factor. If you moved there, you'd probably still expect your stores and services to operate 7 days a week.

But Iceland has some of the most spectacular scenery I've ever seen. It's a pretty cool place in more than one sense.

    I'd move in a heartbeat.

If all I have to do is learn another form of government, learn a different language, learn all the customs, learn how the currency works, move all my possessions to Iceland, find a home, move in, and completely start over.... leaving all my friends and family...

To work one day less a week?

    I can't think of a better idea.

OK, first of all.....I hate you.

Second of all, I read your post while eating a massive ice cream cone.

Have you ever laughed so hard that ice cream came shooting out your nose?

My wife yelled at me "Why the hell are you blowing vanilla ice cream out your nose?"

I said "Same reason I just blew chocolate ice cream out the other end".

Second of all...it wasn't really chocolate ice cream.

That is why I hate you.

Clever. But I can make it even funnier. Did you know that Depends is also a brand of adult diapers? If you knew this, it would even be a funnier post.

The average hourly wage in Iceland is about 32$ per hour and there is no minimum wage

And as a US citizen you get to still have to send the 15 fica taxes to the US government
Then income earned in Iceland is subject to taxes between 36% and 46%

So 51-61 percent income tax and a 24 percent value added tax when you buy things

As far ss the workweek people make that type of move to make more money or they are on a fixed income and move to where the can get a better lifestyle from that money

Or in today's world the move if the have mobile income and the place they move has great internet

For citizens of Iceland this shorter work week is fine and Iceland can do it because that country has1 person migrate to the country every day
