Been reading a lot lately about fasting because of an article that caught my attention.

You go without food for a few days and only drink water.

Been reading a lot of stuff that says it's beneficial in so many ways. If most of what I read is true...the benefits are amazing:

can reverse some diseases

resets your metabolism

clears your mind to focus like never before

reverses aging by cleaning bad cells from your body

the whole thing is interesting...

I'm thinking about going on an extended water fast (10 days).

Anyone else tried this, and if you have do you have any thoughts or feedback?

Our resident expert: Claude, will be along to discuss this topic with you shortly.

Oh, hang on a minute, you said fasting, thought you meant "Fast Food"

All joking aside (yes they were jokes) I don't think anyone here does such a thing. The nearest I have got to fasting is called retirement. You just eat less.

Years ago my mother decided to fast and ended up in the hospital with a concussion - she was light headed from hunger after 5 days- fell and hit her head.

I'd suggest you look into 'intermittent fasting' rather than a drastic 10 day water only fast.

Two days a week (I fasted on Tues and Thurs for a couple years) or fasting 18 hrs a day and eating only during 6 hrs....is healthier than a long term fast.

I don't necessary 'buy' all the lists of pros - but I know from experience it can shake up/wake up your metabolism. Just don't go way out there with it on the first try - do a weekend or every other day...to start with.

I prefer a 8-10 hour window of eating with the biggest meal rather at breakfast or lunch or before 3 pm . It more in the belief I get better sleep if my digestive system is resting as well.

I'm not much a fan of skipping breakfast and eating a huge meal close to going to bed and the getting up and working out in the morning and not eating until lunchtime

People doing that are probably just teaching their bodies to turn that big dinner into fat stores while they sleep or their bodies will cannibalizes small amounts of muscle every day to reduce the calories burned in the morning

I had put 20 pounds on the first couple months of the lockdowns and I pulled that off from October to now

I usually "fast" for around 42 hours or so maybe one day a week. In my view, this helps reset the metabolism and gives the liver a day off to recover.

But I wouldn't recommend anyone going into a strict water-only fast unprepared. Several years ago, I decided to cut down on carbs by reducing or eliminating foods containing wheat, pasta, rice and potatoes. I've since been able to slowly reintroduce the odd carb-rich item, but I've got to the stage where I no longer crave them.

For some years now, I've only needed one meal a day, usually in the evening. During the day, I'll just have coffee, tea or water. This makes it really quite painless to fast for a day - it's literally just skipping a meal.

Apart from any health benefits, what I enjoy most about this regime is the extra time it's given me during each day, plus the added pleasure of planning and savouring that daily meal. For me, it's a win-win.

@ Kay King - that sounds terrible about your mom. I'm thinking (now that I consider this more), trying to do 10 days right away is a bit too extreme. I'll probably start with no more than 3 days.

The 2 days a week is interesting. I had read a lot about intermittent fasting also...it seems to be a big thing.

@ Frank Donovan - the interesting stuff I read about was how your body switches from burning carbs to fat after a day or two...and resets itself to do this. I'm probably not explaining it exactly right, but I found it interesting. The one meal a day thing is interesting.

@ lanfear63 - when you mentioned "fast food" it reminded me of that ad that said something like:

"Was a very smart person that put the "s" in fast food"

One of our friends adult children did a water fast for religious
reasons and died during that. He was in his forties.

So I would not recommend going on a water fast unless you
are under a doctor's supervision and/or excellent health.

When I was younger, in my twenties and thirties, my normal
weight was 125 lbs and whenever I noticed a weight gain,
I would fast for three days until that extra weight was gone.

I can't do that anymore since I'm elderly now and my health
isn't that great, and I don't want to do anything to make
    myself worse.

Just be very mindful of what you do, and make sure that
you take your overall health condition into consideration
before doing anything rash, don't just do things because
it's the fad or because you read about it in a book.

      Interesting comments Monetize.

I'll take your comments into consideration.

It's scary to hear that someone died while fasting. That's sad. I'll probably do some more research into the whole subject of fasting

I am not a doctor but I'm fairly certain that he had
some underlying medical condition. I read that he
had been fasting on his blog, after he passed.

I have noticed that the younger generations are not
going to the doctor the way we did back in the olden
days. We went to the doctor to get checkups and to
make sure we were okay even when nothing was
wrong, it's just something that we did.

But these days people don't go to the doctor until
they have three days left to live. Many people are
getting their medical advice from sites like WebMD
and social media, then they take some Robitussin
        or whatever and carry on.

And this was even before COVID, I'm not even
        referring to being on lockdown.

I don't know what's going on with people. They
will spend all their money fixing up their cars or
going on vacations but don't give a care about
        themselves.

The younger generations with the money to go on vacation probably have the financial ability to take care of their Health

Those who have to put all their money into fixing their cars and filling their tank to get to work might not be able to afford to go to the doctor

I like taking vacations outside the US where I can afford to pay out of pocket for a visit and pay 50 bucks

Medical care is to expensive for many in the younger generations

Please don't. It will be a shock to your system, and I promise you that it will make you weak and sick.

Start with a day or two. If that feels fine, wait awhile, and try three days. Work up to it.

What are you hoping to accomplish with a water fast

The longer fasts traditionally worked to create hallucinations or deep religious devotion

Today it seems to be used as a way to cleanse or an attempt to lose weight

I'm sure there are many other roles of fasting In the past.

  • So much hangs on where your natchrl metabolism is at.

Gotta tellya, if'n I fasted for more'n 2 days, hoomanity would finally discovah the secret of invisibility.

It is naht in my intrest to do this -- but as a confirmed cocktail lovah, prolly I could use a liquid detox sumtime.

So I would wanna look in on sumthin' like fastin' as a meditative an' soulful kinda thing.

When X hours are ovah (an' your biggest prahblem is how not to bite chunks outta your neighbor's dog), you can resoom your regulah eatin' plan.

    I appreciate the discipline here.

Prahblem with plenty food plans are the BANS gowin' on for weeks.

    Like ditchin' all carbs.

What you gaht here is imbalance playin' out for months, steada the regyoolr punctuation of a fastin' regime.

So that is why ima gowin' on an ANTIFAST.

I will endeavah to consoom alla my regulah carbs, proteins, vitamins etc ... but ima pig out Sundays on Blitz Muh Tits treats.

I been undahweight for muh height pretty much forevah, an' I figure this is MY TIME to start packin' a bootay could kill a frickin' mule if'n I pirouette all spontaneous.

If'n I can dual wield squidos all simultaneous, prolly I can get to combat evil for reals.

  • I tried fasting for 48 hours. I was successful in doing it, but I must admit, in the last 12 hours of my fast I was already think about what to eat when I'm done. LOL.

I don't really know if it did something for me, though. Maybe it was good for my liver, I don't know.

It doesn't work like that, you can't fasting 10 days without any practice before, start from one day, experienced your feelings and then you can increase the amount of hours. Just go step by step, you need to prepare your body

I personally haven't tried fasting exactly as you stated above, however I did fast using the 16/8 fast.

So you only eat from 12pm to 8pm, and fast from 8pm to 12pm the next day.
It worked really well and I did this for 1.5 years.
I lost weight and was never sick in that time.

I think it is worth doing personally.

So an update for anyone wanting to know:

Today I ended a 10 day water-only fast. Actually at 12:01 this morning.

The first two days were tough because I kept wanting to eat. After about the 4th day I really wasn't hungry, but sometimes it would come in waves but pass quickly.

By the fifth day, I was having terrible leg cramps that were unbearable so I got some zero-calorie electrolyte packets to put in my water. I discovered most of the problems people have when they fast (other than having a medical condition) is that they lose electrolytes. I was drinking over a gallon of water a day, but that also causes your body to flush out electrolytes. So, I would highly recommend anyone doing over a 3 day fast to make sure you have packets or powder or whatever of electrolytes. There are all kinds of brands.

On the ninth day, I was very irritable. Every little thing would set me off. Not sure why.

On the tenth and final day, I was actually thinking it wouldn't be that hard to drag this out to 14 days...but then I came to my senses.

I run every morning and have for years...but by the fourth day, I just didn't have the energy to run anymore. I just walked from then on out.

Some say they get great mental clarity...I can't say that happened to me. My mind seemed to be all over the place most of the time.

Some say on days 6 - 8 (or whatever) they had tons of energy. I can't say mine worked like that. My energy wouldn't go by the day, it would go by the hour. I might get up and feel lazy and then a couple of hours later be full of energy for a couple of hours...but I couldn't say it was all day.

On day seven I spent hours looking up healthy recipes online. I discovered zoodles which are zucchini cut into strips. Some of the recipes were making me hungry. I'm trying some of them. There was also spaghetti squash that looked really good...recipes for sweet potatoes that were amazing. This list could go on forever...

Just wanted to give a quick update on this post

You were irritable because you were starving.

I've been wondering if fasting affects men and
women differently. I'm pretty sure it does, I think
men can go longer without eating.

I know that I can't go for more than a couple of
days without eating if I'm sick or something and
can't get out of bed, after that I have to call
somebody to bring me something to eat.

If you like zoodles you should try a spiralizer.

BTW, I wish you would have put fasting in the
title, every time I see this thread I think it's
      about copywriting.

And didn't everybody here tell you not to do
      that water fasting thing?

I agree I should have put fasting in the title.

And, a spiralizer, that is on my list next time I go to Walmart.

I did a ton of research on the whole fasting thing. It's been done for ages for all kinds of reasons.

I think I was irritable on day 9 because I knew I only had one day left. I really wasn't hungry at all. Matter of fact, on day 8 when I was in bed, for a minute I was wondering what I had eaten because I felt so full.

I don't think I'll do 10 days again. I would probably stick to 3. There is a lot of scientific research out there that has studied long-term fasting for getting rid of a lot of diseases. Also, those undergoing chemo and fasting for 3 days prior had a lot less damage.

The one thing that intrigued me about fasting was "autophagy" which is where our body gets rid of old cells. All very interesting.

        Thanks for your feedback

    A couple of last things...

went and had blood work today, everything was good.

Was going to try the Keto diet after the fast. They say after around 24 hours of fasting your body uses up its glycogen and starts burning fat...which is what the Keto diet is all about. Lots of fat, lots of protein, and very few carbs.

Well, I do not think I can do the Keto diet because of my running every day. I tried to run the last couple of days with hardly any carbs and just couldn't do it...so I'm off the Keto thing. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

Was talking to the doctor today...if you're a heavy coffee drinker, a smoker, drink a lot, have food addictions, diabetes, heart problems, other medical conditions that weaken your immune system, it's not advisable to fast for an extended (or any) period of time without medical supervision

Sources of macro nutrients matter a lot .

And developing a way of eating you can maintain long term.

Less highly processed foods and vegetable oils. And more vegetables . Potatoes instead of potato chips or powdered mashed potatoes.

I don't know how old you are but Dr. Andrew Weil says that when you get
older, like in your fifties/sixties, you're actually supposed to have a little
      extra weight on you.

He said that in case you get sick your body needs something to draw on.

Not obese just a few extra pounds, I would say maybe fifteen pounds or
      whatever you are comfortable with.

So if anyone reading this is old and skinny, you might want to look into that.

I was in food processing in for most of my 20's. It drove me nuts and partly ruined my physical health. I was working different shifts or different hours almost every few weeks for 8 years.

Stress can turn a very healthy meal into a terrible meal for your body as the cortisol messes up digestion.

One question that boggles my mind about health nuts is why if you are already on a super healthy diet. Is it health nut who do these supper invasive cleanses . A pile of broccoli a day or a kale smoothie. 3-4 tablespoons of ground flaxseed a day and another tablespoon of apple cider vinegar .

And the boost to your bodies cleansing system should be great

I take whole food supplements I have been taken moringa, turmeric, and a vitamin d supplement for almost a year. If I don't the aches and pains come back pretty quick.

You either learn to eat better and take supplements. Or take medications every day that are far more expensive.

As for getting old we are the first few generations that have to deal with that issue in masse around the world.

I have yet to try the tea I have only gone with the tablets I'd go with powder . But the tea seems fine but does it get all the nutrients in that the powder and tablets do.

But the miracle of miring is how easy it is to grow and the number of ways it can be added to the diet for its nutrient load

I'm lazy and it become real easy to cook vegetables in my digital pressure cooker and have them taste good. And throw in seasonings and the flaxseed and others things into the vegetables when I eat them.

I'm determined the make healthy eating for myself easier cheaper and even tastier than than unhealthy eating

This can be done especially if you cut back on meats and eat more
vegetables, fruits, nuts, and grains. And also if you are able to grow
some of your own veggies you can save some money plus have
                  more quality control.

I will order the tea this week and let you know after I try it.

It's funny, I ate whatever, whenever until about six or so years ago when I bitched in this off topic forum about my chronic knee pain and every one here said "lay off the salt", which I begrudgingly did, and voila! The pain and swelling in my knee went away.

Not putting additional salt on my food soon gave way to not eating foods with any salt additives, which after a few months basically made me feel ten years younger.

So I started reading and soon learned how bad sugar was and trying to find food without sugar and salt additives is really difficult if you want to eat processed food, so that got me to learning about whole and organic foods (not the store franchise), which eventually led me back to growing a veggie garden.

I don't remember the timeline but somewhere in there, I stopped eating processed and red meat such as beef, bacon, ham, sandwich meat, etc.

So now I eat whatever, whenever as long as it's not crap. My weight is right where it's supposed to be and I feel great and have for a few years all thanks to this business forum... lol, go figure

Oh yeah, I forgot, for the most part, I only drink black coffee and water, I drink coffee till noon and water for the rest of the day.

I have found that many of these online marketers and other
business people here and elsewhere, especially the more
successful ones and people with money in general, most of
them pamper themselves because they have beautiful lives,
nice homes, families, and they want to continue enjoying all
of that for as long as possible.

And some of them give great advice about various topics.

But you would have found a solution to your problem from
somewhere, even if you went to the doctor or WebMD,
because it was bothering you and you needed a solution.

I read Sugar Blues thirty years ago, I know that too much
of it is bad, but I feel like I need sugar and carbs. I don't
consume excess sugar, but if something needs it, I use it.

I do not add salt to my food unless it's french fries or onion
rings and things like that, but I love to season my food with
cumin, smoked paprika, curry powder, etc. If you use other
seasonings, you won't really miss the salt.

I could not live on coffee and water. I usually drink some
bottled water each day, but I like juices, Gatorade, ice tea,
etc., I feel that it's another way to get nutrients, so I don't
like plain water that much. Again, I think that men and
women are very different in what they can do without.

To anyone who would bash me for drinking bottled water,
if you saw the Erin Brockovich movie, the company she
was pursuing over the Chromium-6, the cancer-causing
chemical, remember that? Well, it's in ALL the water now
so I don't use tap water for anything but household use.
I don't boil any food in tap water, I only use bottled water.

So if anyone reading this is old and skinny, you might want to look into that.
Reminded me of a conversation with #2 son years ago....we were watching a parade of people going through the line at a vast casino 'buffet' and what we noted was this:

An inexpensive all-you-can-eat- buffet attracts overweight people (for the huge amt of food) and older people (for the good price). We noticed many obese people - many senior citizens....then we noticed there were no obese senior citizens.

That day made more of an impact on me than any 'they say' or medical advice. I weigh 10 lbs more than I did in high school, 15 lbs more than I did in college....and that was a LONG time ago.

i was looking at photos from Woodstock last week on my computer.....dozens of photos of the thousands who were at that famous concert. I noticed two things in particular - hardly anyone was overweight....and the women had natural sized, non-enhanced boobs.

I thought about this a little bit.

Maybe the reason old overweight people don't frequent the buffet at a casino is that they have trouble getting around...and may have health related issues that keep them from traveling as much.

And at the concert? Imagine you are an obese person. Standing in line, walking long distances....not what an old fat person wants to do.

That's my guess. Of course, I have no idea what fat people do...Nope!

For a buffet. And I prefer buffets in general because you're
not waiting around for your food to be brought to your table

Woodstock was just before the government got in the business of telling people what to eat and what not to . Corrupt food science based on cherry picked data.

I'm actually going to put most of the blame on aircondioning and over consumption of cold liquids. As much of the excess calories in the diet come from what people drink

Are you sure all the fat old people where not just in playing bingo

        Thank you

Ever read how McDonald's burgers don't decay when buried in the ground. The explanation McDonald's give is the burgers has low water content.

Observe the dryness of the food you eat and why you have to drink so much fluid.

And many cultures eat fermented foods or eat a good amount of soups and stews.

Prior to science many cultures figured out how to get the most nutrients out of foods not just how to grow the most get food to stay on the shelf as long as possible. And to get people to eat as much as possible.

No casino buffets this weekend - Gulf Coast casinos are shutting down today in preparation for Hurricane Ida.

    Really strange timing.

16 years ago to the DAY I worked to help close down our casino - then rushed home to pack and prepare my house for Hurricane Katrina.

Tomorrow the highways leading away from the coast will be just as bumper to bumper as they were 16 yrs ago to the day when I spent over 13 hrs getting to Atlanta (usually a 5 1/2 hr trip).

Just hope Ida keeps moving fast - and doesn't slow over the gulf which would strengthen it and allow it to become larger. Glad I'm not there...once was quite enough.

Oh good someone got the joke at least I hope. Haha but the only running many people do several months out of the year is from their air conditioned car to an air conditioned building I lived in the Philippines for a few month had to go without ac after a typhoon knocked the power out for several days the relationship ended a few hours before the power came back on.

I have lived in Las Vegas , Tucson AZ, and Florida. So I understand what you mean. But I thought deep fryers beat cool whip. Because everything you can eat gets deep fried in the south

Coconuts are delicious but I would need more reasons than
just that to justify leaving the U.S. and living somewhere else.

I am currently doing fasting for 30 days, no drinking no eating from sunrise to sunset, which is about 14 hours.
Ramadan? if so - you do eat after sunset - right? That certainly works as intermittent fasting as long as your after dark 'eating hours' are limited. The 'no drinking' can be a health problem when you live in an arid climate or have work requiring physical labor.

The problem with a 10 day or 2 week fast where you avoid food altogether is it sends a 'starvation' signal to your brain and your body starts conserving energy....thus you do not burn as many calories as you normally would. The 'trick' to effective (weight loss) fasting is to cut back without giving your body a 'starvation' alert.

Australians are on a bit of a health bender at present, (healthy wholemeal bread being hard to buy and healthy snacks, etc).

And l tend to lose weight by cutting back, (an egg and bacon mini roll is just as good as a cake), (but very hard to find the last few weeks).

Not sure why the health kick the last few weeks, maybe the virus maybe the news ones, or maybe something else!

Or maybe none of the above, and it is just because warmer weather is coming,

But l have tried fasting for a day in the past, and it was interesting, but it does hammer your body and it is far easier to cut back on cakes and keep away from Pancakes for breakfast.

    Hi Max,

Let me say an interesting topic. There are many types of fasting diets out there. Based on my own experience, given the fact that I am currently doing fasting for 30 days, no drinking no eating from sunrise to sunset, which is about 14 hours.

Fasting is an interesting method to help improve your metabolism. When you fast, your body is forced to burn stored fat for energy, which can lead to weight loss. fasting can also help to cleanse your body of toxins and improve your overall health. Additionally, fasting has been shown to improve mental clarity and focus. If you are considering trying a fasting diet, be sure to speak with your doctor first to ensure that it is safe for you.

      Thanks for your comment Adam.

I've read about intermittent fasting, which I think is what you're doing?

After I did this 10 day fast, I've since done a couple of 3-day fasts.

From all I can gather, 3 days is enough time to get your body into Keto...and also start the cell process. I know there are a lot of different theories, but it seems the 3-day mark is recognized by most as the time your body gets the benefits.

I may do another fast sometime in the future to reset my metabolism, but for now, I focus on eating healthy. I've also been a daily runner for the last 30+ years, so I think I'm on the right track.

I agree the whole fasting subject is very interesting.

Don't know if you've ever checked the reditt forum on fasting out, but it's interesting

I have checked the one on Reddit, what a great transformation. You are absolutely right, right now I am on intermittent fasting. I started with Keto at first, but as you know, Keto cannot be your forever diet, though I lost 30 pounds,

I am in my mid-30s, and OMG! It felt like I am in my 20s, very active, and focused. The stairs are now my friend, I used to look for escalators, well, not anymore. No matter what you wear, it looks good on you. I had to switch to intermittent fasting because this type of diet can last for a longer time, and you can adapt easily if you messed up.

On the other hand for Keto, one mistake, and you are out of the keto circle or stage and you will have to start over again, besides it can be costly too.

Sounds like something not really healthy....
In my experience, fasting only leads to stomach problems, seriously do not do it!

  • Far as I can see, Chris Hemsworth can say pretty much anythin' bcs he swankyin' out in the internexus between faux Godhood an' still possessin' his own teeth.

Always an advantage when you confronted with a burgah been grilled for 250% longah than it shoulda been, an' Shang frickin' Chi ain't around.

Hey, but can I also recommend intermittent fartin'?

You don't lose too many pounds but it is way fun.

As a Princess, prolly I should naht say this bcs I sposed to be spendin' my days walkin' around balancin' books on my head.

But what would YOU do if you had a choice?

The appeal of bearin' all ten volumes of Dame Edith Midgerley's Sumptuous Vol au Vents (a Guide for Dutiful Ladies) from one end of a palace terrace to another for 16 whole weeks don't rank too great against liftin' your leg from time to time to see how much you can buttahfly effect Saturn outta place on a whim.

Sumtimes you gotta play the maverick card.

If'n it helps, prolly I would vaporize if'n evah I fasted.

BE CAREFUL with what you read. A lot of such things are GARBAGE!

    That said......

I HAVE done "intermittent fasting" for a while. Even having just one decent meal a day could show some benefit. But it would be a good idea to get 100% of the vitamins and minerals.

It CAN help you lose weight if you do it right, and don't cheat much. It CAN help with insulin related problems, to a degree. It CAN reset some aspects of your metabolism, Depending on what you have eaten, and the quality of what you take in, it CAN help with thinking. It WILL clean out your body of a lot of stuff.

As for pure water, the closest I ever came to that was the old "hollywood diet". It was a popular fad a while back. The idea was to effectively drink a diluted juice for 48 hours. That WAS nice, and ALSO did the above, though it may not be as good for a full diabetic. But it also was ONLY to be done for as much as 48 hours a week as I recall.

I did recently hear that you should consider 40 days the ABSOLUTE limit, and I believe they said most people shouldn't consider more than 10 days, but of course this is not going to be easy. OH, and I believe they said that various symptoms like hunger, will go away after about 3 days, though that means you should be more cautious.

I am NOT a doctor, and personally, I wouldn't do the water only fast for 10 days. I probably wouldn't even do it for 2. But DO at least get the vitamins and minerals. They won't adversly change things.

ANOTHER thing! Realize that anyone that is heavy set may have a LOT of fat-soluble vitamins in that fat, and they have the fat, which can serve as carbohydrates also! If you are skinny, it will be HARDER on you. With that hollywood diet, it was only 2 days, and almost everyone has enough fat for that, and the juice had SOME vitamins, and carbs also, so it was quite a bit different.

Fasting diets to me are some what extreme. However here are some of my thoughts on the matter.

There are many different types of fasting diets out there. Some people go for the all or nothing approach, while others do not eat anything at all during their fasts. There are also those who do not eat until noon and then eat again in the evening. It all depends on your personal situation and what you want to achieve from your fast.

Here are some tips to help you choose the best type of fasting diet for you:

    1) What is your goal? Are you trying to lose weight or to gain muscle? Do you just want to feel better and have more energy? Or maybe you are trying to cure an illness such as cancer? These are all good reasons to fast.

    2) How long will you be fasting? You may be tempted to start with a short fast of only a day or two, but if you really want to get results, then you need to give yourself time to let your body adjust to the new way of eating. A longer fast can be harder to stick to, especially if you are used to eating large meals throughout the day.

    3) Are you going to eat afterwards? If so, how often? This is important because it affects how much food you need to eat after your fast. For example, if you eat every three hours, you will need to consume approximately four times the amount of food you would normally eat. If you eat less frequently, you will only need to eat about twice as much.

    4) Are you doing this for health reasons or for weight loss? Fasting diets that are done for health reasons should be followed by a doctor's advice, and they are usually only recommended if you have a medical condition that requires them. However, if you are simply looking to lose weight, then fasting diets are a great way to get started.

    5) Will you use a meal replacement product? Many people use meal replacement products when they are fasting, since they are convenient and easy to prepare. They are made up of natural ingredients and are low in calories. Most of these products have been around for decades and have been used by people who wanted to lose weight, but did not want to count calories.

These are just a few of the things you need to consider before deciding which fasting diet to follow. Please remember your personal safety is paramount and consulting your doctor is the first step in being safe.
