Is it ok not not like beer?

My Dad and I are the same. We don't refrain from drinking because of religion or anything like that. We simply don't like the taste of anything like beer, wine, etc. My sister comes to me periodically with something and says "You'll like this one" and I try it and yuck!

I've felt like a social outcast at events when everyone else is sharing a drink at the bar.

I'll never be an alcoholic that's for sure, but am I alone?

Though nobody will admit it, alcohol is an acquired taste. You don't take your
first swig of anything and like it unless you were brought up on sweet
soda drinks and down something like an Irish Coffee. But some kid who's been
drinking Pepsi all his life doesn't down a shot of scotch and go yum. And
certainly doesn't grab hold of a bottle of Bud and smack his lips into the
      next galaxy.

But like I said, nobody will admit it.

        I'll admit it Steve
I grew up in a family that followed certain German traditions.
One was having a glass of beer with dinner.
Because I was a little kid I got a small juice glass of beer.
The problem was my father bought the cheapest beer there was, Grand Union Premium beer.
I did drink till sometime in my 30's but there where very few drinks I enjoyed.
I did acquire a taste for Jack Daniels though, problem was I never acquired a taste for getting drunk.

The first drink I ever had was a sombrero (Kahlua and milk) and I loved the taste. Although the first couple drinks did have quite the bite to them, it didn't taste bad to me.

The only things I didn't like at first taste were beer and tequila. Beer I got used to but tequila is the most vile liquid I've ever encountered. Never became a big beer drinker, though, but it was nice if really cold on a hot day.

I don't drink now, really (2 pina coladas in 7 years...lol), but I used to love the taste. Kind of made me nervous because there are so many alcoholics in my family. I have always had a high tolerance for alcohol which was really weird seeing as I weighed 100 lbs soaking wet before children.

        I agree.

Also, I could never stand the taste of things like Budweiser, Budlight, Coors, etc. I tried Stella Artois during a steak dinner, and I felt like in some weird way, it complemented the food I was eating.

I had homemade wine the other day, and it was actually pretty good.

Unless my memory is that bad, I believe Bond's drink was a Martini...shaken, not stirred.

Between the ages of 13 and about 22, beer was KING for me. Drank a ton of it. Loved to party.

I remember once at 15 or 16 drinking an entire case of beer in one evening. Was pretty trashed that night

However, most likely because of the amount, by the time I was 22 - 23 or so, I simply stopped drinking beer (any alcohol, really) because I suddenly started getting NASTY hangovers.

Now, I may drink about 6 beers all year - always Sam Adams, always ice cold. Any other beer and I get a nasty headache.

Never drank as a teenager, had my first beer at 18, hated it.. same for other booze. never drank beer since.
I don't really like anything with alcohol in it, period. Just as well really IMO.

Because of this, I don't need much to loosen up at a party. A shot or two is enough, and I hardly have time to notice the taste with those.

Beer, and I think most alcoholic drinks is an acquired taste.
Not sure why Steve thinks no one will admit it.

I didn't really start liking the taste of beer until I was 17 or 18.
Now I drink beer because 1. I like it and 2. soda is just too sweet.

Lost my taste for hard liquor one night when I was 25. Damn near killed myself with a fifth of bourbon. Was sick for 3 days and couldn't stand the smell of bourbon for 2 years.
Now, I'll get shot of Captain Morgan now and again. But absolutely hate to get drunk.

Oh, it is OK to not like beer.

The very reason you will never see me drink whiskey no matter how it is mixed. Haven't touched it since I was 15. Mom and Dad went away and I decided to play.
Mom always considered it the easiest lesson I ever learned, no teachings necessary on the parent's part.

I don't like beer. I had two on a very hot day last summer and if you'd told .99999% of the people I know that, they would call you a liar. I had only the equivalent of one or two full beers the whole year and a half I was in Germany - tasted most just to have the experience, but never found one I liked.

If I am going to drink at all (drank one heck of a lot in college) I will have a Mike's hard lemonade, asti, or a baileys/christian brothers/coffee if it's cold out. Might as well drink something with a flavor you actually like if you're going to drink, and for me, that's not beer.

I can't stand the taste of beer either. I've also had friends drag me around to micro-breweries saying, "I know you don't like beer, but you'll LOVE this..."

I've hated everything they've put in front of me.

Now that I think about it, I'm guessing it's probably their way of getting a free beer. They tell me I'll "love" this, that or the other beer. I buy it. I take one sip. I decide it's disgusting... and then I slide it over to my friends so they can finish it.

    Hmmm...

    Cheers,
    Becky

p.s. I do love wine coolers though. And Bailey's Irish Cream. Mike's Hard Lemonade is pretty good. Basically, I like things that don't taste to "alcoholy."

Alcohol probably is an acquired taste, but I was far too young when I acquired my taste for it to remember. The first recorded instance of me being drunk was when I was less than a year old and my mum found me slightly trollied in my cot and realised that my dad had been giving me a few generous slugs of his beer. Babies' gripe water still contained alcohol in those days, and whenever my dad returned home from the pub feeling the need for 'just one more', he'd help himself to my gripe water and then kindly return the favour the next time he came home with a bottle of beer.

My mum immediately put a stop to all that, and a few lean years followed before I got any more beer. I'd matured considerably, and was five by this time While my dad was out at the pub one night, some kind of trouble arose which I don't remember much about beyond my terrified mum piling furniture up against the front door and shoving me and my sisters into a back bedroom, but afterwards my dad vowed he'd never leave us alone again to go out drinking - he'd brew his own beer instead. Which he did, eighty pints a week (more at Christmas and for family weddings etc) until he died twenty-five years later.

Most of my best childhood memories involve family and friends sitting around the front room getting merry and singing their hearts out. No-one was allowed to touch the stuff until after seven thirty or whenever my dad had done all his driving for the day, whichever came sooner, but once 'opening time' had passed, even as kids we were allowed to drink it pretty much like other kids were allowed to drink lemonade. This despite the fact that it was the stuff of legend, had a kick like a cart horse and could quite easily give the most hardened drinker the hangover from hell.

We all learnt from an early age just how far we could go with it (give or take the odd over-indulgence when we were teenagers ) and even today none of us drink excessively or even particularly often compared to what many people seem to see as the norm. My husband's upbringing was entirely different to mine - his mother was so strict with alcohol that she'd mark the labels with the content level of every bottle of booze in the house, thereby elevating it from the status of something reasonably mundane to that of forbidden treasure. These days, my husband's a recovering alcoholic.

Although I do very much like my beer, it's perfectly normal not to. If you believe the media, there is not a woman on the planet who doesn't like chocolate. This one begs to differ, and is losing no sleep over letting the side down
