As I get older the motivation seems to dissipate, majorly. I have to force myself to do it. And it's no fun

What are some of the things you do to keep the motivation and desire to keep exercising ??

    I do two main things:

    1. I just do it. I tell myself just to start and I can stop whenever I feel like it. 99% of the time, I complete my regular workout.

    2. When I start trying to talk myself out of a workout, I imagine my son giving a speech at his wedding talking about how much he wishes I could be there (but I'm dead). That gets me moving.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

Dan, who God's name are you trying to kid here? We know the majority of your workouts consist of chasing
Claude lap after lap around the The Sweeper Store hoping to snag his jockey strap and force him into one of your humiliating and sadomasochistic flings.

Let's just keep it real this Christmas, shall we ?

That was covered in point 1.

I do very little exercise but I am taking several supplements. The one that actually makes you leaner is a liquid that boosts your testosterone. Even at your younger age it is likely to have taken a hit. I expect you have seen the ads for these, they do work in keeping your body trimmer and giving you more energy and help with your libido.

So along with that, multi vitamins and D3 gummies to make sure your diet is not lacking in that way.

And finally, just started on "Super Beets" Concentrated beetroot in a crystalized powder form that makes a drink. Each teaspoon contains the benefits of eating 6 beetroots and contain Nitric Oxide which boosts blood flow and pressure and are said to give you more stamina. I notice a boost of energy shortly after taking them.

Of course, go a for a 20 minute walk or more each day taking your dogs out and don't eat to many Whitacre foods and you should be a pretty healthy and lean guy without having to do excessive workouts.

Partly what Riffle said. I just start, with the idea that I can stop at any time. After a few minutes, I'm in the groove and just keep going until my muscles stop contracting forcefully.

    Maybe 20-30 minutes.

Also, and this is the real key, my wife exercises every day as soon as we get home from work. She's a trooper. I feel like an idiot if I don't exercise at the same time she does.

But I can't exercise in the same room as her. We inevitably start trying to make the other one laugh. And then all concentration is gone.

My motivation? I have one fear. It's being helpless and weak. So the battle is on. My body trying to get stronger because I stress the muscles and bones...Verses the increasingly stronger urge my body has to weaken with age.

It's a battle I will lose. But not without a fight.

I promised my wife "If a horde of zombies attack us, I promise you this...you'll live a few seconds longer than I will". It should have been in our marriage vows.

Well it depends walking every day can be all you need cardio wise . What do you do to keep muscle tone. Over 40 it seems the better choice is to learn to use resistance bands

And I go with supplementing with ashwaganda and moringa.

I just moved down to Tampa Florida so I have been walking around quite a bit learning my way around.

Walking is my preferrence is to walk and to live where I can walk to stuff

    I normally do this:

    1. Calm my mind through relaxing or prayer or meditation.

    2. Stand in front of a mirror and do affirmations such as "I am fit and healthy", "I can do anything I put my mind to", "I am in control of my appetite", "I enjoy the feeling knowing I overcame my health challenges", "I enjoy the breeze and sun on my body as I exercise." There are about 25 more like this.

    3. The last affirmation before I start my exercise includes a bit more. I take off my shirt and say (several variations) "I have a fit, tone, body that causes others to be jealous and drives my wife crazy."

    4. I put my shirt back on quickly and slump to the bed sobbing while I confirm over and over that I'm a lying sack of s__ not worthy of living with such an ugly out of shape body.

    5. To calm myself down and soothe my hurt feelings, I find comfort in comfort foods whether it be candy or something else.

    6. However, no matter what happened yesterday, I'm a firm believer in having an opportunity for a fresh start every day. I realize that yesterday with the above I was weak, and I just need to be strong and get it going. As they say, Just Do It.

    7. So, for my fresh start I calm my mind through just relaxing or prayer before I repeat the above ritual.

This has worked wonders for me. I'm more out of shape, weaker, and closer to my deathbed than ever before!

    Mark.

We are in the off topknot the mind warriors plenty here can be looked at a negative.

It was obvious to me it was an attempt at humor. Then again the scourge of the last few years has been those who don't understand humor painting everything as negative hate or something.

It was a joke and he was making fun of himself not anyone else again a lot of that goes on in this sub forum.

But then again people who waste time every day for long periods of time getting motivated and never do anything are easy to mock.

Motivation is no substitute for action

Now that I am in Tampa Florida I don't have to visualize much anymore I just walk around and 90 percent of what I visualized is around to look at. So much walking I wore the rubber off my sneakers in 10 days.

Sometimes text is hard on communication. There's no reason to apologize to me. I try to have thick skin but also try not to offend others.

I'm glad my lame attempt at humor was understood. My point was that no matter what other little bit of success I've had in other areas of my life, pretty much nothing I've tried has helped me in this area. This has been a helpful thread to me at least. I hope it helps Robert and others who are struggling as well.

I understood cause I have done it but I am lazy and only managed for a week at most.

I have taken extreme measures to figure out how to heal. The extreme advice I'd give you if you are in a low cost of living country . Is get real massages with no extras three times a week and sit in a sauna for 30 minutes a day. Then develop an addiction to green smoothies that seem to be available every where.

Saunas have the same effect on the vitals as a cardiovascular work out. Read or watch the research.
And if real massage cost 5-10 dollars where you live in Asia .

There are different ways to build your appetite for working out .

First you have to weigh your options by looking at all the different excercises that people perform .

Some people don't like running so they cycle instead ,some people don't like lifting weights so they do calisthenics.

Not getting harder for me, apart from being more careful since my left arm is sore due to months of ....whits locking us down for world record lenghs of time, (l have had to sit in my car, in order to read a paper, and leaning in the back seat wears you down).

Stress and tension can also make it harder, so ignoring Mass Media does wonders, as does research.

I'm going to die if I don't start exercising. (Well, technically I'll die regardless but you get my drift).

Partially due to your post I'm starting again tomorrow morning. Some people do Facebook Lives to keep themselves accountable. I wonder if that would help?

In my case some of my pains (a couple of different areas) will be helped by exercise they say but the exercise causes more pain. It's a catch-22. You know how they say don't push it if it hurts? In my case they say push it if it hurts.

Since I've become an adult exercise has never been very exciting, so I've never done much or stuck to it. I do remember my younger years and kind of fantasize about things I used to could do. Now I got to do it when it hurts. Or else.

Mark; May I suggest exercising in a way that doesn't hurt.

If an area of muscle hurts, exercise other muscles. Do endurance exercises (even walking)

For example, I have a torn muscle in my left shoulder. i can do lots of different kinds of shoulder exercises, except i can't use one muscle (at least not well), so I work the muscles around it, and it benefits from the blood flow.

If you have one muscle area that hurts, work the muscles around it, and there will be some stretching and exercise done in the peripheral effected area.

Even using light weights (if you use weights at all) helps.

a rule of thumb is, if you work a muscle at all more than it's used to...it gets stronger. You don't have to work it until you are exhausted, just until it's worked harder than during a normal day.

It's almost effortless to get stronger in the beginning of any exercise program. Even a few minutes a day helps.

Thanks for the ideas. Maybe starting slower is part of it. Today wasn't so bad but it was short and slow. Consistency has been a problem for me. I lose 20 pounds then gain it back celebrating my weight loss. LOL

Part of my problem is I need to do more moving even during sitting/working time. I've set an hourly alarm in Outlook to remind me to get up and move and do something (more than walk to the fridge). for a few minutes to keep the blood moving.

Thanks Robert for starting the thread.

          No problem, Mark.

It's tough. I think I am inclined to go with what Dan said. I do exercise because I do want to walk my young daughters down the aisle at their weddings some day. So that's pretty good motivation for me to try to stay healthy (but not the only reason as it just makes me feel good throughout the day after I'm done).

NOTE : Just because you exercise doesn't mean your Life will automatically extend. It just puts the odds more in your favor that it will.

Maybe an interesting side note. It's still debatable whether regular exercise makes you live much longer.

Thee is plenty of evidence though that if you regularly exercise, you'll be much more active and vital in your later years.

For example, at 30, pretty much everyone is active and healthy. At 95 pretty much everyone is mostly inactive, and needs help to get around.

But there is a heck of a lot of difference between a 65 year old man that exercises and one that doesn't.

I have customers that are 65 that look 45. And I have customers that are 65 that look like they are on their way out.

Weight has a lot to do with it. Smoking too. But exercise is a way to fight the ravages of age.

You mentioned wanting to be there to see your daughters marry. A noble incentive, as is Riffle's.

Critical is finding thing that are considered exercise that you enjoy doing every day. And won't lead to injuries.

Especially if a person finds systems of moving that cause endorphin rushes.

I live in a fantasy world though where it is far better to find work you enjoy. Prepare healthy food that tastes good to a person. And move in a way that keeps the body healthy and pain free. Seems reality for many is all the good things involve struggle and deprivation.

Health is built on maintaining positive behaviors permanently. The hack is to find the positive behaviors that are pleasing.

Behaviors that put off the developing of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases that slowly develop over decades.

Depending on "exercise" .. Even if it's just 10%-20% of your other regime ... Then that's still a great accomplishment.

The key is not to think about it and just do it...

I workout at home and use only dumbells and resistance bands. I simple grab a set of dumbells and start exercising.

I do this four times a week for about an hour per session.

I also go for an hour long walk twice a week.

    Mindfulness meditation may help...

No, not living Claude, but whenever l went out, with all coffee shops closed, apart from takeaway here and there) it was the only place l could relax, and enjoy a coffee, cake, (usually a donut, l know lets not go there) without shopping trolley collectors, with new found powers going rampant.

As well as some stress and tension, from that and other influences, which made me reach back on occasion in a rush, which has lead to strained muscles in that area.

Which has lead to it taking forever to heal.

But it is just a reminder that l have endured the longest lockdown on Earth, and l won't say any more, but rope, a long pole and on public display gives you some idea.

I have mu Willy Wonka Golden ticket now, so l can pretty much get in anywhere, but that issue still remains.

This is not medical advice and for entertainment purposes only

I have spent the last gradually eliminating chronic pain and I was at the point if I went through treatment and got on medication I could have been considered disabled.

Inflammation is what you need to focus on and incorporating food and supplements that are anti inflammatory and finding out what food you really enjoy eating. That you have been eating all your life . That is probably causing inflammation.

Or you just spend way to much time in air conditioning.

I think you said you are in Asia somewhere you might want to take time every day to be outside and walk around. Or walk to a place that serves real cheap and tasty vegetarian food once a day

  • This is a fun thread! I learned a lot! This coming from someone who sits around in front of the computer the whole day everyday!

I would love to just start exercising, even walking my dogs, but my knee hurts when I stand up, so I sit back down again. LOL.

I will try to slowly walk around the neighborhood, though.

You know I have been a Runner my whole Life and to be honest I always kind of scoffed at Walkers. Like I was better than them. Which is totally f-ed up because Walking I have found out through personal experience is one of the best exercises you can do. It puts less stress on the joints than Running does. And you can really burn a lot of calories with an hour of brisk Walking.

Charlyne, I think you have the right mindset; just start off slowly and build your way up. Best of luck

Try forcing myself out the front door every morning. Use the Actifit app to make sure to cross in the green everyday. When the weather is real bad. (rain, sleet snow ). Keep busy moving around inside the house or walk indoors.

If they get worse you should get the knees checked out. The younger you are the easier to be treated. Know to many people in their 60's & 70's that had a knee surgery already done or needed one. Just a .02 and not medical fact, seems over time they knee just wears out.

Had a good workout today and it was not hard at all getting motivated.

Did 6 sets of sit-ups at 6 am. At about 6:45am I ran 3 miles . Then around 8am played 21 holes of disc golf where I shot my best score for the course at Even Par ( took an hour and fifteen minutes to complete the course). Came home and walked the dog for a mile or so.

I had 16K steps by 10am and I am happy to report that it was a delightful time. Hope to get 20k steps by the end of day.

Anyway, I do not want to seem like I'm gloating or bragging but just trying to convey the point to people that exercise does not always have to be drudgery.

Cheers to finding your sweet spot in having fun getting your heart racing

Actually a great "side" exercise. You burn a lot of calories if you are pretty aggressive doing that

Do you have a dog? If so, use the dog as your excuse to get outside with dog on leash and walk, run around, jump around and just be in the moment with your buddy! If your phone has a walking tracker you'll be surprised at how quickly your steps even in your backyard will add up!! Good luck!

my step daughters just got me a stationary bike and not Peloton! I am looking forward to setting it up and at least getting some bicycling done at least a little each day.

The best way to get yourself back into exercising regularly is to just get started. It can be similar to internet marketing in that the most difficult part is simply to take some action.
For me, it simply means that I work out when I wake up every morning. Once you do something for 3 straight weeks it is said to become a habit. I work out at Planet Fitness and they are very welcoming to newbies.

mostly everyone finds it difficult to exercise and do their routine with great pleasure, because it's hard and sometimes you don't know how to start. but when you start it you find it out that your energy rises , you feel healthier, your mood switches to better -these are real motivators. turn your fav music and do your best. good luck.

I don't think it's always been easy to exercise. I'm 23 and I force pretty much all the time. It's not motivation but discipline.

If you live alone, maybe you will not find motivation, because you will probably think about yourself.
But if you live with family or close friends, then maybe they can motivate you. The goal of exercise is to stay healthy. And if you are healthy, you can gather with your family and friends. So, live healthy for your family and your friends.

We are our own motivation. But sometime we don't go and get demotivated. There are a few things that help keep us motivated. The first thing is never to promise yourself wrong. Whatever is done for 6 months should be done in 6 months only.If he promises to do that work in 3 months to himself or if he is not a thing, then he feels demotivated.

The second thing is that we must compare ourselves with someone because motivation comes only from competition. And never set a big goal, always walk towards the big goal while achieving small goals. And try to achieve something new every day that is better than yesterday.
