      Shaleniie,

If you've been using Vista I can see why your avatar has a gun pointing at your head :p ... I have a Vista machine, and that OS sucks the life right out of you.

As a vista user I can say with certainty...never vista...when I got my newest laptop I downgraded to xp within the first week...the only reason I went back to vista on the machine was for the direct x 10...go 7...

I like Windows 7 so far. Normally I don't use a new OS until the first service pack comes out, but I've been using the RC of Windows 7 for the last several months and even the RC of 7 is more stable than Vista in my opinion.

I'm still using the RC on a couple PCs but have upgraded to the complete version in other cases.

Yeah, I had vista also. PIECE OF JUNK! It almost sounds like Windows 7 is an attempt to make a NEW vista from XP, as opposed to an improved vista. It seems like the compatibility problems, settings problems, absurd waste of resources, etc... are GONE! VISTA is said to not even INSTALL on an EEE, and NOBODY would try. Windows 7 not only installs, and runs, but is close to XP in performance. Some things a little slower, some a little faster.

BTW WHY does ANYONE trust a company that can't even figure out what to call their product after more than 2 DECADES!?!?!?

FIRST, They figured they would call it WINDOWS, and use a version number.

THEN, they FINALLY decided to use some features that had been available for a while to improve things, and wanted to tighten it. They PLANNED to move to THAT!

They realized they couldn't do that, so they FORKED! They decided numbers were too confusing, so they numbered them after the year. 95, 98

THEN, they figured ENOUGH WAS ENOUGH so, WITHOUT making it VERY clear, 2000 became NT!(This was the version rumored to be V5?)

OK, they found that was a bad idea SO, since 2000 was the start of the new MILLENIUM, they called the "new" version ME!(AKA millenium edition)! TALK ABOUT CONFUSING!

THEN, they decided that they should ABANDON that, and the next version was XP!(V6? An argument could be made that this was not substantial enough to warrant such a change.)

THEN they decided to abandon it ENTIRELY, and call it VISTA!(v7? OK, MAYBE V6)

NOW, are they back to versions? I guess I COULD understand it being V7. But versions 5 and 6 were not labeled as such. V4 was the last version of the NT product known as NT. HECK, windows 7 technically doesn't even exist, because it IS windows NT 7, or windows 6(Windows 5 was ME(95 and 98 were too similar in my book)).

    OK, CONFUSED YET?

I've been using Windows 7 since beta and haven't looked back.

Before that, XP was my work horse and had gradually started moving to server 2008 as a workstation.

Everyone says they hate Vista, I have to state otherwise, Vista kept me busy with tons of repairs and a steady stream of income from both on site and remote support when I was doing that kinda thing full time..

I don't have anything bad to say about 7, minor glitches that were hardware issues and it not being fully supported by all the software yet.

You can always change the compatibility mode and most will work without a hitch.

As always, no matter what you decide upon, keep your files backed upped.

I recommend installing all your goodies first, when everything is to your liking, Do an System Image backup. This as simple as going into control panel - back up and restore. It's always best to keep the image elsewhere than the drive you have the main OS on. "external drive?"

      Seasoned,

Hilarious and realistic viewpoint. Still with MS leaving the door wide open for Apple year after year after year...Apple chooses to stay in their little corner manufacturing overpriced shiny little toys.

I'm now just in the habit of throwing away a laptop after about 14 months and this Toshiba with Vista is about due.

LOL - I have been tempted, but I have 5 laptops and 2 desktops. All were Vista machines because last time we bought, they came with Vista and I figured - Why not?

I lived with that about a year and now simply got myself a larger hard drive, bumped the RAM and installed 7 on 2 machines so far. On the desktop I upgraded, it's 5 or 6 years old now and since putting on 7 it runs like new. Unbelievable really.

So far I upgraded 2 for less then half what a new laptop would have run me.

Windows 7 over Vista, hands down. I like it as much as I did XP.

Why does everyone hate vista? I swear someone just says they hate it and people that know nothing about computers decide that they hate it, and voila, everyone hates vista. Not saying you all that hate vsta know nothing about it...

Why, is the question? Why does everyone prefer XP over Vista? I certainly do not. Vista has outperformed XP in every way for me, as well as having better features.

I haven't used 7 so I have no opinion on it. All I know is Vista > XP any day of the week for me.

I have always heard horrible things about Vista and I agree it's not great but as it came on my laptop I have kept it and really had no trouble, just a few annoyances of how to use, but otherwise it has worked fine. No big problems at all. I got it a year after it came out so I am sure a lot of the bugs had been worked out. I do not plan on getting Windows 7 now, either. I will wait a year or I will just get a Mac!

OK, well, one company would like to correct you:

I recently switched from a computer w/ xp to a computer with Vista, and yes even though the new computer should out-perform my old one in every way, it does not because of Vista. In technical terms, Vista is an insufflator of voluminous spherical objects. In layman's terms, it sucks big balls.

    Reasons:
    - Much less driver support for just about any hardware.
    - software locks up a lot more on Vista than on xp.
    - when software does lock up, not even task manger will allow you to shut down some processes, meaning you have to hard boot your system to get it to respond.
    - networking is a nightmare compared to xp
    - there are a ton of popups asking your permission for everything you do (you can turn these off, but it's a pain)
    - I could go on w/ these forever, but I need time to install my new windows 7 that just came in the mail. - yeeeehaaw!

You want to hear BAD things about Windows 7? OK! There are things that are GIVENS!!!!!!! People have wanted them since the 1970s! They have asked for them ALL THE TIME! INTEL even made standards for SOME, like hibernate, sleep, graphics instructions, etc..... HECK, the desire of them even predates the electronic computer. When M/S windows FIRST came out, people were SCREAMING for them! HECK, UNIX predates M/S windows by over a decade, and IT addresses some things!

So what is windows 7 campaign like? I goes like this... "I......" They describe a problem they supposedly had, and a claim that M/S somehow found out about this and COPIED THEM! They THEN say.... "I'm a PC, and windows 7 was MY idea"! HECK, people thought about these things before I did, and I thought of most of those things when some of those people were even in DIAPERS! Even before some of them were even BORN! SERIOUSLY! HECK, ONE talks about "controlling his house", and he then describes a computer network that UNIX did before M/S windows even supported a NIC card! Well, *I* was talking about doing it for REAL in the 1970s, and did it in the 1980s. NETWORKING *****AND***** the actual house.

If windows 7 is SO great, couldn't they think of a better and more truthful campaign?

Well, VISTA ****AND**** 7 have a piece of GARBAGE that amounts to be a TROJAN that will slow down the system A LOT! VISTA has it ON by default! 7 has it OFF by default. BTW it first appeared in VISTA!

SO, if a clean install of VISTA ran NEAR the speed of a clean install of 7, VISTA would actually be FAR FASTER! SO, for the tests, did they DISABLE the aero interface on VISTA? If not, the test is MEANINGLESS!

I don't know anything of any trojan. Can you give us any proof or confirmation of this ?

But why should Vista have aero off ? If 7 also ran with it.

It is DOCUMENTED FACT! M/S merely doesn't consider it a trojan. They consider it a FEATURE! ROTFLMAO!

On 7 it was OFF!!!!(Translation... DON'T USE IT!)

Windows Aero - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On VISTA it was ON!!!!(Translation... WASTE TONS of time on a cutesy interface!)

It turns out that the Windows 7 version of aero is also updated less frequently and less precisely, so it isn't as much of a drain even when running.

While it may appear I am picking opn you,I am not.At the same time, this is a faulty statement at its finest. If you got two viruses it was most likely due to bad procedues, not the OS.

I haven't used Windows 7 but surprisingly, I do not really have many of the problems with Vista that everybody seems to be worked up about.

For a start, all 6 of my XP machines plus externtal hard drives and USB flash drives were infected by a group of extremely nasty Chinese viruses at one stage, but my Vista machine was immune. It took me more than a year before I could cleart the viruses out with NOD 32. Kapersky could detect it but could not clear it, and the others could not deect it at all.

My own experience was that Vista was much more stable than XP. The real problem I have is that it seems to be running very slowly on a Netbook that I rarely use.

Well, read my replies to your OTHER statements, and you will see why we differ. MOST vista users probably use ONLY certain software written *****FOR****** vista, and perhaps MOST only use the software they GET with the computer. The more you stray, the more likely it is that you WILL have problems.

Vista is NEW, has a NEW firewall, and a NASTY interface that queries ALL THE TIME! MOST probably TURN that interface OFF! DO YOU? And TAPI may be used for viruses, like many other programs use it, and VISTA has INTENTIONALLY placed flaws to PREVENT it's use! ALSO, some software RQUIRES the M/S firewall to be engaged.

EVERY netbook I have ever seen has a MAXIMUM memory configuration equal to the bare MINIMUM for vista. Also, the CPUs are generally UNDERPOWERED!

Why do people say Vista is ****?

Well MY main reason is how it sucks so much juice that my recent PC runs at the same speed as my 5 year old desktop using XP with 25% of the RAM and processor strength as my new one...

It doesn't seem to be Microsoft bashing since I too only have heard good things about Windows 7. Thanks to Vista, I did laugh hard at the Mac ads (I'm a Mac, I'm a PC) and consider switching!

YEAH, the Apple VISTA ads looked STUPID and MORONIC! You have to think "YEAH RIGHT..."(sarc). THEN, I got vista. BELIEVE ME! They were NOT exagerating! In fact, I would have done it a LITTLE DIFFERENTLY!!!!!

      1. Guy TRIES to run first task.
      2. Guy TRIES to run second task.
      3. Guy SLIPS and starts third task.
      4. Vista comes back and says "Task trying to access internet, allow....".

Vista did improve with the service packs, but it's still a pile of ****e. I would never again put it on a computer or buy a computer that came with Vista. I still have it installed on one of my laptops, but not for long. I just bought an Intel I7 that I put Windows 7 on, and that's an ass kicking computer. It's the first computer I've actually really liked. I still use XP on the one I'm typing this on, and have no complaints. It's a whole lot better than Vista - which really is more of a virus than an operating system.

The dude asked over a year ago. I'm guessing he probably made a decision by now.

I find it interesting that every second new OS released by MS is crap. They then fix it and the next release is a good system.

Win3.1 (the first version I used) - great
    Win95 - crap
    Win98 - great
    ME - crap
    XP - great
    Vista - crap
    Win7 - great

Win8(?) will probably be crap, and used to test all (most anyway) of it's bugs for the release of Win9, which will probably be a great OS.

LOL - great point. I guess I'll stick with 7 until 9 is released (with the first one or two service packs...)

Vista was a trainwreck. I'm still waiting for another service pack before trying Win7.
