Tomatoes: 30 large ones

Alright when my mother-in-law gives a gift it's a gift and a half. She doesn't hold back. She knows I like tomatoes, as does anyone, but I got A LOT.

So, 20 large tomatoes, what should I make or do with them before they go bad?

This is your tomato challenge; recipe me.

    Tomatoe casino:

Use a square piece of tinfoil. One square for each tomatoe.
Cut tomoatos from top to bottom in quarters but leave bottom connected.
Place one tomatoe in the center of each tinfoil square (leave one square of
tinfoil to make your own tin-foil hat after dinner)
Fold up sides of tinfoil so it will hold filling without dripping

In sauce pan - saute 1/2 cup onion, 1/2 cup green pepper (per 4 tomatoes)
    1 Tablespoon tarragon wine vinegar
    2 Tablespoons butter
Saute til veggies are medium tender and have wept juices.

Pour veggies and juice over tomatoes, in an even distribution.

    Top with swiss cheese.

Fold up ends of tinfoil and twist closed.

Bake for 30 minutes on 350 degrees.

Suggested combo for guests - Tossed salad, choice of meat, chick, fish,
twice baked potatoes, and multi-grain bread or rolls.

    Good stuff.

Early 1990's Quayle got into somewhat of a tiff over potato or potatoe? Got to be somewhat of a political joke for awhile.

Good cripes. Yes I misspelled tomato........and I bet it isn't gonna change the taste of that Tomato Casino one whit! I will, however, refrain from publishing the recipe unless the error is corrected.

Good thing I remembered to remind him to save a piece of tinfoil for a hat.......there's spelling Nazis all over this place......and I'm not just being paranoid!

This is not your first misspelling offense. You have been busted many times before. The Foreign Professor would have been expected to have made such an odious faux pas, but you of all people should have known much better than that. Anyway, thanks for the Tomato Casino recipe, it sounds delicious. (KJ: The misspelling of Dan Quail's name is nowhere near as serious)

I of all people realize the ridiculousness of expectations of error free spelling in the English language without laborious efforts with spell checkers and spelling dictionaries. I of all people should renounce the advocacy of insistence upon perfect spelling in conversational communications that are not business oriented and, in my estimation, cause extreme inhibition of spontaneous thought.

When in electronic personal conversation, typing is merely a simulation of spoken word, and just as we stutter or misspeak in verbal conversation, we also do so in electronic personal conversation. If we so intend to amuse ourselves analyzing the mistake patterns our fellow "speakers" commit, which can be quite humorously revealing by the way, we MUST stop insisting on perfection in conversation. Yo.

You're absolutely right, by the way, Paul -- that recipe is absolutely phenomenal. I'm sure if you serve it up with Prime rib (um, I'm assuming from the odor of some of your elicitations that you do imbibe in beef?)
and a finely baked potatoe (oh my) your guests will remember the meal with delight for a long time to come.

Sal, you KNOW I was playing, right? I just have a twisted mind. And I just couldn't resist, in remembrance of the uproar it caused when Dan Quayle misspelled potato in a grammar school class which was broadcasted on national TV. That one gaffe was considered by many to be a major cause for him to lose any chance for becoming President.

But, of course, when George W Bush was elected President (twice ), it just goes to show that spelling and grammar can be butchered in so many ways, but it is really a non-issue.

Your recipe does sound sumptous, and I am going to have to try it. But I very often also enjoy a nice crisp raw tomatoe (oh my) - for eating as well as for throwing. Twenty large tomatoes won't last long at my house!

LMAO - and when are you not playing? I guess I really need to start using the smilies. I always forget the smilies and being a sarcastic wench in the best case scenario, I really MUST remember to use my smilies.

I like raw tomotoES, too. If you gave me 20 home grown tomatoes they wouldn't make it past a plate of slices with salt. But, sometimes ya just want something a bit more impressive.

When I have my own garden (hasn't happened in many years but thinking strongly about it again) when it all ripened I'd have a big bonfire and a table set with nothing but homemade breads, fresh dairy butter, salt, paring knives and vegies -- with a pot of steamed corn and potoatoes. I never had many "not able to make it" replies to the invites.

I knew that you were being sarcastic, and as you know it is one of my favorite pastimes.
But sarcasm bites hard sometimes, and it may have looked unintentionally serious.

Of course I know it is one of your favorite pastimes, and your are right that sarcasm can really bite. You are correct again, also. You at times look unintentionally serious, just as you at times look unintentionally very intelligent:p

    Sal your recipe sounds good.

The way I would use a whole bunch of tomatoes real fast is to cut them up and saute them into a sauce. It wouldn't be a true spaghetti sauce unless you start with paste and usually Roma tomatoes would be used in that case.

What I would make would just be the simple tomatoes that you could use in omelets, as pizza toppings, in stir frys, or just in a bowl as 'stewed' tomatoes.

I wouldn't even put anything in them except maybe a little salt and sugar because I just love the taste of tomatoes.

If you would rather have more flavor, you can start with a very brief saute of minced garlic and/or onions in a little olive oil before you add your tomatoes.

If you want to go glorious add some fresh, chopped organic basil.

Just keep cooking them slowly and you will be able to tell when they are in a nice chunky but liquid state. (they will cook more in whatever you add them to).

If you just seal that up in a jar or plastic container, it will keep for a while. You could even freeze it.
