Today I Rescued A Human

Saw this on Linkedin. Something positive during the Holiday Weekend. Dog lovers should enjoy this.

"Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I needed to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had at the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked lately. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and I want to make a difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck, she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all will be well...

I was so fortunate she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one...I rescued a human today. - Author Unknown "

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

A friend sent me an article on horses last week that has been on my mind ever since. The farm where I ride has several older horses that have been 'retired' there. They have grass and hay and are groomed and petted (often by groups of kids coming to see the animals). It's a good life for an old horse.

So often with horses and dogs what was a trusted pet for years is handed off like an 'object' when slowed down by old age. I'm not talking about rehoming to a good home which is sometimes necessary....but end of life issues for aging pets.

Animals don't judge their lives in 'years'. Don't take an old dog to a shelter - or sell off an old horse for slaughter or to someone who may abuse it. Spend that little bit of money for a vet and euthanize an animal rather than dump it if you can not or will not care for it. Dog or horse - the quality of their life depends on how well they are fed and treated....better to end the life of a Senior animal than to sell them off or dump them so their 'end years' are hurtful, frightening, hungry.

I'm a dog lover and I absolutely love this. I saw a documentary once with a man that lost his wife and became severely depressed. The depression had a negative impact on his physical health.

Long story, short, he ended up rescuing a dog, that changed his life. The time he spent with the dog, got him outdoors and his mental and physical health improved dramatically. At the end of the presentation, he said in reality the dog rescued him.

Dogs are more in tuned with humans than some humans are with each other.

My four girls have helped me on many days when I was a little down or moody for some reason. They love me no matter what I look like, how fat I am, what my education is, how much money I make, or how high society I am. They love me for me. And that love (or what I feel is love) does "rescue" me.

Isn't that something we could all learn from dogs?
