Have You Ever Tasted A Completely New Flavor

You get to a certain point in your life where you have tasted a huge range of foods, either single items or combined. . All subsequent food experiences, you may like them, but it tastes like just a variation of what you have had before, either more refined perhaps and even the components in combination giving a certain unique experience.

However, you still are familiar with the core ingredients so it's never a completely new flavor.

Can you cite, in recent times, any culinary experiences so unique, that you would say, this is like nothing else I ever tasted before and you have no prior frame of reference or eating experience to apply to it.

    I had a dish that was jasmine rice with lean ground beef and baby bok choy - with fresh ginger and other spices...and Gochugang (Korean chile sauce) over the top of it.


    I loved it and had never tasted anything like it. Took me three tries at making it to recreate it - but it's now on the home menu every couple of months.

    Has to be Lime Brulea, about two years ago, with a side, of Italian ice cream.

    When you have both together it is like a cold sherbert with hot custard, that was new although separately no big deal.

    This was at the Golf practice driving range in the countryside, which l used to frequent until it changed hands and went downhill.

    It used to be open fireplace in wintertime, a large range of different cakes and a cat that made everyone feel welcome called Princess.

    Now it is no fireplace and just candles, no cat, three dull cakes lousy service and fragrant incense burners at every turn, to make sure you remember the place,....and never return.

    But l do remember this, and have found no other place that offers this.

    When I was in the Philippines 9 years ago my girlfriend cooked a real good chicken adobo. But the chicken in the Philippines just tasted better to me anyway.

    I have also been craving a good garlic kangkong which I ate nearly every day the three weeks I was in Manila.

    More recently I had a biscuit and gravy dish a month ago that had pork baked into the biscuits. And in January I had an amazing smoked brisket and baked beans. That is probably the best tasting bean dish I have ever had.

    The couple months before I left my brothers and went to Tampa I had developed a love for eggplant. Served in many different way. I had also given up pan frying hamburgers.

    I learned to make a tasty meatloaf in my pressure cooker. The just started making the blend into burger patties instead of a loaf.

    Did you sense I chomped from afar with intent to rival nowan manifestin' a $300,000 Jeep within 24 hours?

    Were there sensations you couldn't quite describe, which only become apparent now?

    Prolly this is how stage hypnotists make a livin'.

    An' I believe if'n you deep fry 'em, they taste bettah if'n you remove the pocket watch first.

    Thanks for your contributions, but so far it looks like known ingredients combined and while it tasted wonderful, can you really say it was 100 percent unique and "New". You probably said, well, there is rice in this, and beef, and I detect ginger etc.

    An example of something unique would be that when young, you first tasted a banana. There is nothing to compare with it's taste. It would have been something completely new.

    It may well be that their are perhaps some fruits undiscovered out there or have never been distributed to the western world, perhaps some root vegetables too.

    I think the nearest I have come to this was Pesto Sauce. Although familiar ingredient's, it did have rather a unique taste, but it was just not enough "out their" to be considered totally new to me.

      I worked in food processing for nearly a decade so I ran into almost every flavor during that period.

      So really everything tastes like something just different Ora better way to combine familiar ingredients

      One of the best flavors and smells was the first day working in the sprey dryer with clam powder. One of the worst was leaving that uniform in a plastic pag in the car trunk over the weekend

    In El Salvador, you'll find "Rooster in Chicha" where you have a rooster, and a fermented liquid named Chicha, which is based on fermented corn, and pineapple peel. Sometimes this mix includes tamarind and other local ingredients.

    The flavor is very distinct, even for locals. You won't find it everywhere, since cooking the "Gallo en Chicha" is a time-consuming process. You'll usually find it on special occasions and there are many variations. It certainly fits your criteria of tasting as something new.

    You want to ask the question and dictate the answers, too? You've been here longer than that.... It wasn't the beef or the ginger - it was the gochugang I had never tasted.

      Re-read your post, but you did not specify that the Gochugang was the unique thing.

      Gochujang or red chili paste is a savory, sweet, and spicy fermented condiment popular in Korean cooking. It is made from gochu-garu (chili powder)

      To my mind, having used Chili Powder and used in cooking many times it would not be a totally unique flavor. Now if you are saying that it was transformed by some process or added ingredients so it tasted nothing like chili powder, but something new, then perhaps you scored a hit. I cant judge without tasting it myself of course. So I will take your word for it that if fulfilled the criteria.

      I'm being strict here in a quest to find something unique. You would not ever say when tasting, well this is great, it reminds me a bit of this or that though, if you say that, its a fail, if you do not, congratulations, something new.
