Now, people can fly! Would you?

Wingsuit base jumping: put on your wingsuit and take a flying leap!

Looks awesome ... but I don't think I would have the nerve.

So ... what do you think? Would you try it?

I think I would. Killer Joe posted about a guy who did this,
among other things. He died last week from injuries in a
    parachute accident.

When you're flying in the wingsuit you're moving 45 mph
in the vertical axis and 100 mph in the horizontal axis. But
I'm guessing there's a bit of technique to it.

All in all, it's fast. Wingsuit flight only lasts several minutes.

I want an Elvis style white wingsuit. High collar, sequins, studs
    and everything.

I dont know if i would do the wingsuit, but have you seen pictures or vids of Rocketman from (i think) Sweden? He's not just gliding, he's really flying

Ive seen people use these suits in freefalls before opening a parachute from a normal aeroplane... If you would skydive then you can try it without having to glide past a mountain like these crazy guys.

I would try it if I was comfortable with my freefalls.

I would, but at 275lbs my wings would be so big I'd have to file a flight plan so then the whole becomes rather tedious.

Many years ago I jumped out of a perfectly good plane. Since then, I have learned to make better decisions.

Gorgeous landscape in the film and the flights look graceful - but had to wonder what some of the landings might look like. The word "splat" comes to mind.

Um....I think I'll stick to climbing mountains. I like my feet on solid land. However - a jet pack that would help give me a booster sure would be nice when I'm almost vertical at 12,000 feet. Now that's work.

Great replies, everybody! I just love the humour expressed in some of the posts!

@KenThompson: "I want an Elvis style white wingsuit. High collar, sequins, studs and everything." ... Thanks, Ken. Hilarious! I can just imagine you...

@Kirahster: I agree with you - I'd probably chicken out, too.

@Michael Motley: Rocketman is great, too! Somewhere, I've got a link to his video, too.

@Radix: Funny guy - file a flight plan! But hey, anything is possible; maybe pump the suit up with tiny little pockets of helium or something!

@Kay King: "Splat" was the first thing that came to my mind, too! They DO use a parachute to land ... but even so, whizzing by the mountain so close ... I don't know. You'd really have to be a daredevil.

@HeySal: I like your thinking! Climbing is MUCH better than falling! lol

@josspam: Yes, "base jumping" -- Fans of the sport jump off of anything high enough to give a parachute time to open: buildings, bridges, towers, mountains, whatever.

Thanks again, everyone. The video thrills me everytime I watch it!

        Hi, Mark:

Thanks for posting the video! I agree - it is awesome and inspiring. Definitely a "leap of faith" for those with the will for it!

The more daring of these devels fly just inches away from the rock face. As the narrator says, if they strike any protrusion, like a rock or a twig, it could cause them some real concern. At that speed, they would break something for sure and possibly spin completely out of control.

I would love to be standing on that mountain road when the jumpers buzz past!

Yes, so true. Rocketman is awesome! He is perfecting something that others will be able to take advantage of, or benefit from in some way, some day.

Unfortunately, he had to bail out of a flight early a couple of days ago. Apparently turbulence or something rendered his rocket equipment uncontrollable and he had to deploy his parachute.

            He'll be back!

      Hello, everybody:

@webwyn and @JasonP, I agree about dropping so close to the mountain! It's one thing to simply free fall through the air, but doing it just feet (perhaps inches) from the mountain face? Crazy! Imagine if somebody on the mountain kicked a few stones free and they bounced into the trajectory of the jumper? The jumper would hit those stones at 100 mph and the stones would probably pass right through the jumper like bullets!

@Jim Gillum, yes, a chopper is much more user friendly! You have time to actually enjoy the scenery. I've only had the opportunity to fly in a helicopter on one occasion a few years ago when I was a newspaper reporter and like you, I loved every moment of it -- didn't want that experience to end.

      Hello, all:

Well! Base jumping off a mountain is one thing, but how about "space
      jumping?" Is it possible?

Just watched the absolutely awesome Star Trek (2009) movie on DVD
several days ago (saw it in the theatre in September), and was reminded
of the scene where the young James T. Kirk and the young Hikaru Sulu do
a "space jump" from a descending landing craft so they can try to land on
a drilling platform above Vulcan to try to knock the drill out.

Looks pretty exciting in the movie, but I just don't know that it could
work from such a high altitude. I would expect that friction might set the
      "space jumpers" on fire!
