How do people live with this cold?

I know there are places in the US where temps in single digits and subzero are normal in winter....but I don't know how people take it. So much for my childhood dream of living on a ranch in Montana or Wyoming.

I let my dog out this morning - 2 degrees F and 26 mph winds....she took 3 steps out and was back in the door before I could close it. An hour later my son had to go to our barn about 40 yards or so behind the house. I put my dog's coat on so she could walk out with him - assumed she would 'go' and run back in. No - she followed him all the way to the barn - 5 minutes later he was returning to the house and half way my dog gave up and just fell over on her side in the snow and he carried her back in. Her little foot pads were so cold.

I went out myself long enough to toss a bucket of bird seed on the ground as birds couldn't fight the wind to eat from the feeders. Poor little dudes need a lot of seed just to survive this weekend.
  • A few days ago, we threw several bags of walnuts in our back yard, so the squirrels would have something to eat.

We are worried about the pets outside. We called our in-laws to see if they wanted to reschedule the Christmas dinner. Nope. I hope everyone can stay out of the bitter cold. It will get better in a few days.

What if they're not stars? What if they are holes poked in the top of a container so we can breath?

Yes. We belong to a strange church. Some people do an egg hunt in their yard at Easter.

We do a walnut hunt in our back yard at the first crippling freeze...severe snow storm of winter.

Our church is small. Most don't survive the holidays.

I feel super fortunate to live where I do. This time of year we get anywhere from balmy weather in the 70s and 80s and 90s, to the lowest i've had is in the 20s with either blizzard cold gusts or wet spots on my face when i look up that people here actually call "snow" lol but i'm originally from Missouri and that's not REAL snow haha..

I'm in the Orlando, florida area

My good thoughts are with all of u in the cold to be safe and warm

    Merry Christmas too

I just feel for the animals and wildlife outside in the cold. I just think their normal routine is disrupted and might cause a problem with their normal way of life, especially if it continues to go on for a while.

Where I live most of the animals adapt to this type of environment. We had a brutally cold January last year.

Went for a walk yesterday afternoon it was 26 yesterday afternoon. It was very windy and the temperature was dropping! I heard someone's dog barking outside in the neighborhood. Don't know if the owners realized the dog was outside or not. Hopefully, they brought him in before it got worse. It's 13 degrees here currently with a wind chill below zero.

Last Summer was worse for the animals with a drought in the middle of the summer.

In my area, this will only last another 24 hrs or so and then we'll get above freezing...whenever there is a huge storm - or I see news of a forest fire, I worry for the wildlife.

Today I worry for common sense of some people who live here. The local facebook page for a nearby town is full of 'are the road clear yet'? Temp is still just above 0 with 18 mph wind and roads are covered in ice and snow. How do these people think everything cleared up overnight?

Or "what level are we on?"

Had a major incident today where someone spotted a little dog outside...that got over 100 comments on how cruel people are and how some people should be forced to live out in this cold...

turns out, the woman let her dog out for like 2 minutes to go to the bathroom.

Exciting times when people can't get out.

We did go from level 3 to 2 earlier today.

I think people already had their shoes and coats on waiting for the all-clear.

Probably because some people after listening to people with Digree's on their walls and others that we cannot mention here, have gone with the false ideal that the wind coming from the Arctic is warm air.

And so they figure, ok my dogs will be fine.

Oh yes - the 'what level are we on' questions - people are funny....

On the other side, a lady posted a blurry photo of two large hunting dogs with the comment 'my neighbor put his dogs in his barn with heat lamps and the wind blew the door open...if you see the two dogs please let us know. At the time it was wind chill about -30 and really nasty out.

Within 10 mins someone posted 'we found both dogs - we have them safe in our garage'....that's small town people.

    Hee hee!

    Actually, back in the day...

In reality this is really not that bad, (spoken from North Eastern Minnesota, current temp -11 wind chill around -35) the winter of 76 or 77? I was working at a turkey farm. From Jan. 1 to Valentine's day the ambient temp. never got above -30 they didn't report wind chill values.

Said farm was on a 480 acre field next to a medium sized lake. Walking two minutes from barn to eggroom the eggs on the outside of insulated baskets would be too frozen to use.

Also Kay, I lived in Wyoming for most of the 90s. The climate depends greatly on where you are. When I lived in Lander on the Eastern slope of the Wind River mountains winter we're mild compared to my native Minnesota. When I lived in Rock Springs winter was a non-stop, brutal frozen wind storm. The North Eastern area in the Black hills is also relatively mild.

    Brr!

    Happy Saturnalia everyone!

Surprisingly, other animals generally handle the cold better. That always kind of surprised me, but Humans try to prepare and grin and bear it.

I lived in a part of california that had virtually NO winter to speak of. It WAS nice, except for when it got very hot. I became accustomed to temperatures as low as 22F(Actually 10 degrees below freezing!)! I moved to indiana for a number of reasons, and didn't think the rather low temperatures would bother me that much. Several years later, I ended up being outside in one of the worst environments. The weather went down to -17F, the normal temperature was OK, but the wind caused it to plummet! I could only stay out a couple minutes, but I kept putting my hands in my pockets and all, and had ear muffs, and a jacket, so I managed to survive unscathed. My car was actually SEALED UP! I was gone 2 weeks, and the ice melted and refroze, effectively WELDING the door shut! So it was fun trying to stay dry, and break the car open, while having to remember to avoid frostbite!

I listened to a person one time who INSISTED I wear a coat, and I am not so use to the cold now. And last Sunday we had what weather.com called a BOMB CYCLONE! So LOTS of snow, and it is COLD. I STILL have to go out to plow the snow, but NOW weather.com is saying the weather will be pretty warm tomorrow! FORTY TWO DEGREES! WOW! So I guess I will wait.

I'm glad to hear your son and dog, and the birds are ok. 8) Smart dog, BTW. That was probably the only way she could avoid frostbite! Still, if your son waited too long, it could have been bad.

The wind is the worst - that was the problem the first 24 hrs or so - same storm you experienced.

We worried about the deer and other exposed wildlife - the cold is one thing and they can take that ...this one was dangerous because of the rain turning to sleet as temps dropped quickly and then to snow. Animals didn't have a chance to stay dry in that.

I'm shocked at the number of deaths in New York/northeast....so many people who frozen to death in their cars. Why would you go OUT in your car when those conditions were either occurring or forecast?

Starting to warm a bit here - in the mid 20s and headed up to 40 tomorrow...at least that will clear the rest of the roads.

I'm always surprised at the number of people who don't Carry simple survival kits in their cars.

You put it in and once a year you rotate out the old power bars and freshen the water. Mine is wrapped in a comfy quilt.

    .
It depends on your luck, some pileups or accidents may mean you are in a row of cars on a freeway in a blizzard for most of the night.

Petrol cars, you can put the heater on for up to 8 hours, EV's their battery's discharge quickly in extreme cold, so you get an hour or two then affectly die.

EV's may work better in Australia since -2 is probably about as cold as it gets, (Victoria is as close to the Antarctica as you can get apart from Tasmania) but wind/solar/battery's fail miserably in extreme cold.

Not sure if a survival kit will do much good, or if it is very cold, you need heat or the law of thermal dynamics will do you in.

It seems that it only took a decade for me, Sal Yukon and others to finally show or be vindicated that cold air comes from the Arctic.

      Survival kits include "heat."

Mine has two one-pound propane tanks and a little one burner stove that screws onto them. There are also a couple cans of Sterno and two-dozen dripless candle. Other contents are boxes of Lipton cup-o-soup, two liters of water, instant coffee, sugar, tea, hot cocoa mix, raisens, power bars, two mylar survival blankets, a small radio and a first aid kit.

Winter's can be brutal here and I live 15 miles from "civilization" and cell service is sketchy at best, so I never leave home without it no matter the season.

Ok, l didn't realize that small propane heaters existed, or l knew about open flame ones which are pretty dangerous in a car, (did a check).

I guess you would need to put the exhaust pipe out a window, and use something to block the gap?

Open flame would apart from the fire risk would be pretty dangerous with the by products filling the car?

EV cars in countries with extreme cold spells, is a bad idea and the ones that act before thinking may pay with their lives, (but nothing new there).

Agreed but people in my country have died of Carbon Dioxide poisoning by leaving a faulty gas heater on all night.

If you are stuck in a blizzard on a freeway, put one of these things on then go to sleep you don't want to wake up in a hospital bed with a bright blue sky outside and wispy shapes flying about?

If you are too simple minded to handle a tiny, very safe heater for 24 hours ( maybe more, probably less) to survive a crisis situation then I guess you'll be a +1 to the ones who didn't.

High air pressure rushes to fill in low air pressure. Air currents can be affected by ocean temperatures, cloud cover, mountain interference with air flow....huge fires, volcanic eruptions, seasonal temperature changes, and more.

Last I heard of Sal, several years ago she had a bad cancer but was doing well against it, but stopped posting. I suppose we got the impression it was bad though and was only a matter of time. Can it be confirmed she passed though? I suppose what you said Kay confirms it since you knew her.

I don't have an obit, etc - but she told me she was terminal and a few months after her last post her long running 'rocks' forum closed down. Sal was in her mid 60's though few here knew that.

I had emailed and had phone calls with Sally. Any who knew her here knows how smart and 'out there' she was. The last two phone calls I had she was on rants about medical systems and doctors and various holistic health treatments. She was even angry at some on this forum. Like Ken Strong near the end, Sally was convinced there was a 'cure' if she had the money for it.

She was furious if anyone suggested chain smoking might have contributed to throat cancer....she stuck with her conspiracy theories. I'm shamed to say I did not return her last call..this was a few months after my daughter-in-law's death and the calls were difficult. There was nothing I could do to help.

Wow, never knew it was throat cancer and she chain smoked. That will do it alright.

I know someone in Greece that's into all the alt stuff. Swears by herbs, vitamins and magnesium of all things. To her credit she is healthy and was a fruitarian for years, then switched to raw vegetables and now cooks them. These things are all well and good but can only go so far in being preventative. She got Covid but it was light and she is staunchly against the vaccine and vaccines in general.

She tried to cure her cat by herbs and vitamins (she has many) but it probably died simply because it was old.

I see a little madness in all this, while not being adverse to alt ideas, some people take it too far thinking it is be all and end all. It is not.

Sal obviously became a little desperately deluded towards the end, blaming doctors, conventional medicine and even the alt stuff she championed. Simply put though, you put masses of potentially poisonous substances into your system over a long period, then nothings going to cure it.

Didn't know she had been a chain smoker either. What's weird is she gave off the impression that she was a health nut. Maybe she changed her ways but as many chain smokers who have quit can attest to is that the damage has already been done.
Regardless if you have quit for years.

Anyway , I liked Sal and she surely deserved another couple of decades on this god forsaken rock we call Earth. Definitely

Ok, sure, l made an assumption going by Marks comments and replys that most followed with the current narrative about the climate emergency or that warm air was above the Arctic and it did god knows what to the jet stream so you end up with the current blizzard.

Which is a piss-weak argument to say the least.

Why, because l watched an "expert" recently tell me that the Arctic has warm air and it affects the jet stream which laughingly makes it freezing before it hits the US.

And the other clown which we cannot name here for political reasons recently said, "the warm air in the Arctic melting all of the ice is distressing" or something like that.

So if you and others agree that freezing cold air is in the Arctic then you don't buy the planet burning to a crisp and sea level rise hooply anymore, which means you don't buy the climate emergency anymore which means l have been right the last decade as the others l have mentioned were right.

    As l said proven right.

In another 10 years time another biggie l have been saying for years will be obvious, but Mums is the word.

If you have been saying it for years...how can it also be Mums the word?

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

Sal died some time ago, we did a GoFundme campaign here, l handled the graphics.

Started one - and ended it quickly because Sal was unhappy with it. Talking to her about that alerted me that she might be having cognitive issues.

I would almost want to start a thread called " What Happened to?"

We know Big Mike passed away.
Wateverpeida was in real bad shape the last time he posted here.
John McCabe probably is probably deceased and never returned the last private message I sent him. Others have asked about him also.

Wonder what happened to Miss Terra? I know she use to post elsewhere. Then just vanished.

A few gave up on the forum or no longer doing Internet Marketing. But some you have to wonder about. Oziboomer? Ewen Mack? etc...

Yeah I don't think John McCabe was the healthiest person around. Really sad if he passed. An all around solid guy. I did not know Big Mike or Whateverpedia that well

People are often asked how they live with this cold. In general, people try to stay warm and dry. Some ways that people may try to keep themselves warm include wearing a coat or hat, staying in a warm place, using an air-conditioner, and using an inhaler if needed. Finally, many people also try to drink plenty of fluids to help keep them hydrated.
