Your Alternative Career

When I was 3/4 I used to watch the steam trains go underneath the railway bridge (yeah, I'm that old) and announced to my parents that I wanted to be a train driver when I grew up. About a year late they switched to diesel. The attraction went away.

My sister learned piano up to a point. I occasionally played tennis and really enjoyed it. Later on in life I composed music using a keyboard without being able to play it. Just finding the notes and chords.

So, I think I had an aptitude for being a good tennis player and wish I had learned piano as a kid. I could have been a session musician or part of a band.

Is their anything you think you had an aptitude, talent, or interest in doing when young and regret not perusing it as a possible career?

A radio DJ or a News Anchor. I can think decently fast on my feet and have a knack for talking and expressing myself.

You could easily start a podcast on a subject of your choice. Would be interested to hear how your voice comes over. I remember you linked to a video you made in your car. Your voice was perfectly good.

Thanks so much, Mark, for the kind words.
Yeah, having a Podcast I think I could be successful at. Not sure what I would talk about

But you know I am at the age ( mid fifties) where I am settled in Life and just have no drive whatsoever to really dig down deep and start something new like that.

Just in the last couple of years I have gotten like this. It's weird.

Yes, being passionate or angry about various issues is more in the domain of younger people. As you get older, you lose interest, happened to me. You become more content with whatever life you carved out for yourself.

I suppose you could just talk about what interests you now, like making money online, investments etc. knowledge you are clued up with and would be seen as an authorative figure on.

Same here. It may just be what happens with age. At about 55 on, I noticed I got less interested in business, less interested in making new friends, less interested in learning completely new skills.

It also get harder to learn new skills as you age, so there is that as well.

What I have noticed also is that I feel more deeply about things I do care about, my family, a few close friends, doing the right thing...treating people with more compassion..

Some of that comes from being married to Cheryl, but I suspect it's also just how the brain ages.

I like the idea of you doing a podcast as well. As long as you are authentic, there is always a group that will feel a kinship with you. And they will find your podcast. One way is to be interviewed on other people's podcast. And it's easy to get on podcasts. While guests are looking for podcast hosts, th host are looking for their next guest.

  • Maybe 30 years ago, Cheryl and I talked about having a book store. We both love books, being around books, and reading.

We thought it would be fun when we reached retirement age. Then bookstores started dying everywhere.

When I was a teenager and young adult, I was a decent artist. Then I stopped when I started in business. Now...45 years later or so, any talent is withered away.

Cheryl's the artist in the family now. And she's better than I ever was.

Cheryl always wanted to be a school teacher...teaching art classes to young kids.

Given that you have a lot more time on your hands, like I told you, I recently went to one of those places where you are guided to copy or do your own version of an art piece. Two hours using acrylic paint and a small canvas. Mine turned out ok and aspects of it like the sea and sky turned out pretty good. It was surprising how it all came back to me in a short while.

Perhaps something you might indulge in just to see what you can do.

Maybe I could have a podcast called "50 and beyond" and talk about some of those issues you mention i.e. investments, making money online and offline etc...etc...

Actually, when you get to mid 60's, there, any more investments should cease because you are retiring and putting any money into something that takes several years to mature, well, you are retired, time to start spending the fruits of your efforts. Remaining life expectancy comes into play. There, something to talk about.

Well where you are not retired but making an income without a standard job or a business. You can speak with others and to an audience of people who are doing things.

It doesn't really have to be a success in traditional terms just a way talk to others doing the same things you are.
