People Filming in Public Places

Seems to be a current trend to get a reaction. Young guys with their cameras going into public buildings or even just out on the sidewalk and filming them and staff. It is not illegal but really upsets the employees and public. The police are often called but really cannot do anything other than try and intimidate them to leave. Content for their Tic Toc and YT videos to earn ad revenue.

All I can say is I wish they'd make some more worthwhile content. Your thoughts.

It may be another 50 years before we acknowledge the detrimental effect of social media on civilization as we know it. The 'right' to photograph or make a video of strangers without their permission....is a lack of respect for the rights of others and the privacy of others.

The 'anything for entertainment and attention' may well be a cog in the increase in violence against strangers, road rage, etc. My question is - who watches this stuff and why do they care?

It barely seems worth bothering about this when in the UK you can hardly venture out into any street or public building without being captured on CCTV camera.

People appear to have accepted this state of affairs.

Yes, it's very much an American phenomenon.

Otto, Tom Hanks movie plays on that and some may think it is pushing reality but hard to tell these days.

These folks consider themselves First Amendment Auditors. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Amendment_audits

Done the right way, there is some value in what they do. Governments love to expand, and, through that expansion, civil liberty can be eroded. Many of these auditors have affected change when they were illegally arrested and won lawsuits against governments.

That said, some of these guys are just idiots looking to cause trouble.

It is a challenge for the police. Some of them don't seem to be fully conversant on the amendment rights of the individual and will get hot headed and ask for ID where none is required because no crime has been committed, sometimes they handcuff people and take them to jail only to find they get disciplined, sometimes fired and the force pays compensation for the rough treatment they may have endured. Of this front, the people who do this know the law better than some police.

And that's the exact problem. I tend to "Back the Blue", but, if one is going to be in law enforcement, one should know the law. Further, unchecked, some, not all, law enforcement officers can drift into tyranny. These guys can, when done right, provide a good refresher for police. The unfortunate part of some of these videos is that they prove the need for such refreshers.

That said (and I repeat), some of these guys are just idiots looking to cause trouble. It's a concept that is a dog whistle for certain personality types.

And there I am, running through the streets naked, trying to get anyone...anyone to film me.

I feel it's discrimination against fat old wrinkly naked people.

You have to look at me, film me, and tell me how brave I am. I know my rights!

You would have gotten more attention with a yellow banana hammock and a sparkly bra and a pair of cowboy boots.

I mean there would have been a crowd of people filming the police shooting you with a bean bag gun and arresting you.

Hahahaha I actually burst out laughing reading that. They call that naked ol'wrinkly-phobia. Soon there will be marches in the streets for your bravery and rights don't you worry!

I live in Canada and so far I haven't seen anyone actively filming themselves for social media, but the day I do it will be very unsettling.

Its all just "clout" these days, the kids will do anything for it, literally. Just lately there was a "Benadryl challenge" where you take a psychoactive dose of Benadryl and a 13 year old died from it. This is a societal pandemic we are dealing with and I hope it gets addressed sooner rather than later. Kids brains are being rotted.

I agree. Employees and members of the public have a right to privacy. It can be uncomfortable for them. I don't like being filmed by anyone either. It's so disrespectful for me.

So what would be a useful thing to have to make these people go away, to break up the beginnings of a flash mob dance, somebody pranking you in a store etc. I am thinking either a water pistol or small super soaker or perhaps a small dry powder fire extinguisher. Any other ideas on that. You could certainly obscure their cameras with the above suggestions without breaking it.

An then we have the people who ask for charity, to shake your hand or something which intimidates many people and then the person who does give them something gets 500 bucks or an Iphone 14. I would say, look, just cash that phone out and give the money to the Red Cross to help people who really are literally starving.

Exactly, needs to be brought back to force these tic tockers or YTubers to produce some interesting video content instead of trying to shame people, often who will not respond simply because they fear you will turn out to be some kind of nutcase.

Also, where do they get all their initial money to pay for their handouts, the same can be said for these people who put hundreds into slot machines to film their handpays. I cant believe it all comes from ad revenue until they have hundreds of thousands of followers to fund it. Yes, I'm suggesting they are privileged people who have more money than sense who go out and do these frivolous things. Hoping for a revenue stream or return later or just to be able to boast that they have loads of followers and are influencers. A little bit of an ego thing going on here.

So, you assault and batter someone who is within the bounds of law. This is the exact response some of these people want.

Like I said, some of these people are trying to hold up the Constitution. Others are doing it under the same guise to cause problems like goading you into assaulting them or police officers into illegally arresting them. And then come the lawsuits.

Yeah it is a problem. Perhaps a small black cat with a white stripe down it's back on a leash and some suitable foul smelling substance sprayed around. That might help.

Isn't that like trying to deal with people smoking cigarettes where you don't want them to. By lighting a pile of trash on fire.

The simplest solution is for the advertisers to tell the platforms not to put their ads on this type of content. The same way apple figured out the easier solution to the privacy issues from the intrusive data collection of social media companies. Was to give users of their devices the option to ask app not to track.

After this bud light stuff large brands with established brands might get skittish about wading into influencer marketing. But I just might have to much hope. Big brands will probably just continue to lose tens of millions millions of dollars flat out offending their largest group of consumer . ( our marketing focused to much on people who drink large amounts of watered down beer)

When the money goes away so will a majority of this dumb stuff
