Tech, The New Metaquest 3 VR Device.

Comes out on the 10th of October. I have the original Quest which is pretty good though a little dim. This one has a much brighter display, a wider angle of view and a much higher resolution, over 2k and a much faster processor. The price for the 128 gig one is $499.00. Amazing really since the Apple thing is going to be $3,500.00

You can watch wide angle tv on it as well as movies and VR clips. Yes, it's an indulgence but I will buy, I love tech and the reviews on this device have been nothing short of ecstatic.

It also supports Augmented reality. The original Quest has a black and white camera in front to give you a fuzzy view of your room. This one offers a full color, high resolution view of your surroundings. So, that means, it maps your room and is then able to overlay virtual objects in the room and change the decor etc. Not to mention portholes to other dimensions on your walls and ceiling. I think that by the time the way overpriced Apple thing comes out, this device will have totally captured the market.

I can't help thinking though that augmented reality is a bit of a novelty though, acting as just a gateway to full VR experiences. The device is 40 percent smaller in its front facing size than the Quest 2 so should be a lighter and more comfortable fit. As with the Quest 1 (experimental at the time) and Quest 2. You will be able to use your hands to manipulate your environment and not have to use the controllers at all. It's rather unnerving to have a digital representation of your hands in front of you but something you could get used too.

Of course the apple version is going to be much more expensive than other mainstream device that is the selling point for people who buy apple devices. Especially if you add in apple devices allow users the option to avoid data collection.

The lower price of the meta device is great if you're fine with meta tracking everything you do with the oculus headsets.

I'm a bit cautious about a lot of new technology where you need an account or to pay monthly fees for the device you spent a good chunk of money on to be useful. The own nothing thing.

I'm waiting for a better interface method or more ar based holographic stuff so you keep the ability to be aware of your environment to really get interested.

Plus I'm very put off by the current model of video games and the way they are monitized and I would buy these types of things as gaming devices. So it's hard to get interested.

What do you plan to use them for and how do you think a VR headset would provide a better tv or movie watching experience. That the biggest tv you can get in front of your couch or chair with a decent surround sound system.

I first cite my age and wanting to experience the things I only dreamed could exist before I pop my clogs (cute expression meaning expiring) Back in the day I read SIFI where there were hologrammatical TV type entertainment devices to watch. And then we had the Star Trek Holodeck.

This type of tech is way forward away from being realized. Their is a little glimmer that a true 3d TV might be made where you need no glasses but it's still a long way off. So, then VR headsets came out, a sort of shortcut. I could watch VR clips of places being visited or virtual environments to wander through etc, but as yet, a true VR action film is yet to be made where you are watching the action unfold in front of you and sort of in the movie so to speak, except, Tom Cruise did have a bit of stuff like that in VR when he was in a helicopter filming an action sequence from a prior Mission Impossible movie. You were watching from behind him. The potential is staggering.

So, for entertainment, and education I think we have a huge potential. Until then, we have movies and tv that you can watch on a huge virtual Imax type screen in front of you with picture quality and sound that allows you to be caught up in the experience, still pretty immersive. As long as the headset is comfortable enough, does not hurt the eyes, and is not too heavy on the face etc. The Quest 3 will be the closest at a reasonable price. The Apple will be even more so, but look at the outlay, and no games or VR entertainment planned for it, it will be for work, interactive meetings etc and the cost is staggering, way overpriced. I think the Apple will be a lemon because of this. They just got too greedy.

I really don't have a care as to Meta tracking what you are doing either, not like it's going to be anything illegal. If you think about it, it's also like having a huge screen TV that would normally cost thousands.

I'm 45 I remember paying 2500 dollars for a PC with a 66 mghz and processor. The new technology is usually more expensive.

It only overpriced if you are not someone who buy s the new cool device from apple.. would you buy the apple product if it was just a few hundred dollars more than the meta quest or would it still be over priced.

The AR is as close to holographic as we will get anytime soon for mass consumption items otherwise you need the huge amount of cash to get an advance d computer system like you see in crime show s.

But I see how you could get the value out of the meta quest device

The Apple device for a few hundred more would be something to consider but you are locked into their little universe. Would it also change their pitch to end users for more general and fun use and software to back that up. The current perception is that it's just an Apple computer thru VR.

Quest has far more variety already currently available. Since it's also based on Android, you could have a virtual Chromebook with office type stuff on it as an extra.

Yes I wondered about this crime scene projection stuff. I assume it exists as shows were set in current times. Bones used it a lot.

I will stay away from most big tech products that don't allow users to repair equipment on their own or through 3 Rd parties. The own nothing part of own nothing and be happy.

That is why I would stay away from apple at this point. 3500$ and if something doesn't work or breaks you have to send the device back to apple and pay what ever they charge as well as wait how ever long it takes to them to repair it

I'm kind of blah and not as interested in any of the new technology that you never actually own no matter how much you spent to aquire it.

Since the Quest has a web browser, after purchase, I will not be paying a dime for any extras. There is YT, my favorite, Pluto TV, and lots of web sites with plenty of up to date movies to stream for free. Also I may be able to put Kodi on there and if I can, I have apps that stream the latest stuff.

I hate Mac stuff. It looks good, is well made but has internal components that can go wrong and can be unreliable. It's not easy to get repaired either by third party repair shops as Apple maintain tight control on all the hardware. So, unless you have a repair contract with them, you might as well buy a new one. Rip off prices, rip off repair costs.

If you think about it, owning a PC or Mac means you pay a little towards the O/S since it's built into the price. No more buying Windows on disk etc. But really, you by paying for the PC are also paying for the software, you do not own the software though, only for the rights to use it. You own the hardware of course and you own the Quest hardware if purchased. But, without Windows, Mac O/S or Android for the Quest or smart TV, these devices are useless. Only by downloading a free software like Linux could you say that you own it all outright.

We have a similar issue with apple but there are plenty of people who don't care and will pay the higher prices.

But because the apple model is so profitable it's being used with any product a company can put technology in.

I watch Louis Rossman on YT. A right to repair activist. He's runs a repair shop and is highly critical of Apples internal hardware. The same components fail again and again. If he can get hold of a capacitor for example he will fix it. Go to Apple and they would want to charge you for a replacement board at an inflated price, so high, that you'd be better off buying a new one, which is what they want.

Older Apple's, perhaps prior to 2016 were much easier to fix, carrying more generic components that are not soldered or glued down.

Well, I have had the new Quest 3 for 24 hours now. A great improvement over the original, brighter, faster and a higher resolution. You get to see your room in full color thru the cameras and can decorate it and have things happen. Needs a well lit room though, otherwise a bit grainy. I was able to read my cell phone thru the cameras too.

And as for movie watching and VR media viewing. You can lie down in bed and watch a movie high up in the room. Not quite an Imax screen but pretty immersive, the sounds good too. You could pay a fair bit more to buy a good multimedia TV than the Quest 3. Comfortable enough to wear, it serves it's purpose for me.

I tried an Augmented Reality Demo. It was unreal. I was first asked to look around the room, my bedroom, with the headset on. It overlayed and mapped the room, took about a minute or two. Then after that I was prompted to press play. Looking at my room live, a whole chunk of the ceiling broke and debris landed on the bed. Then a rather silly spaceship came thru the hole and landed on the bed. A trapdoor opened up and above it and a rather silly large ray gun appeared hovering above it. I was directed to click on it with my controller and I acquired the gun . Rather like holding the silly firearm that Jim Carey had in the Mask.

I was asked to hold down the trigger and it lit up the room as I moved it around like a flashlight. Then, there were little things happening around the room, little puffs of smoke coming from room objects. Finally, These rather large gremlins appeared, rather like large depictions of germs with angry faces. I had to shoot the hell out of them. Some came right up to my head, very intimidating. The game was on a couple of minutes timer, as it counted down, the gremlin attacks got more intense. Finally, when time ran out, they all impressively exploded. In my firing on them, I had pretty much destroyed the room, chunks out of my TV, huge swathes of the walls and ceiling missing with a fantasmogorical landscape beyond, opened up. The spaceship took off and after a second a small flying saucer came down and landed on my bed. Game over.

Highly impressive and very realistic, you could actually believe it was happening for real.

I hate to resurrect such an old thread, but I'm thinking of getting one of these for my son. How is it holding up? I read they just released an updated Netflix app that corrected some issues that hampered the initial release.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

It is holding up very well. Just very occasionally I have had to restart it. But I leave it plugged in all the time and though perfectly ok it seems to like it better to charge it, let the battery run down to a certain level then it asks you to re-plug it. Works better that way. Also possible brief internet drops could do this. Does not interrupt what you are doing except if you are running around the room. I bought an extra long charging cable anyway. At the very worst. If you ever get a freeze up, let the battery drain, replug and re-start. What I have said above is a vey minor gripe and rare to happen.

I still use the original head strap provided, works ok for me, never had the need to upgrade it.

The one thing I like is that they are constantly updating it with downloads and it gets easier to use all the time. It uses wifi 6e, the latest (pretty much still for most people) so it is very fast and snappy. It is constantly being improved. And, you will get all the latest enhancements if you buy now as opposed to when it first came out.

Don't be tempted to buy the Quest 2 because they are going cheap. It is that much better in resolution and performance.

Oh and no longer required to have a facebook account to login. This provided a lot of people problems in the past who had had their accounts banned or could not get one for some reason. You now create a separate "Meta" account to use it when first used.

I Don't use Neflix by the way.
