Two things stood out to me.
A solar eclipse can only happen when the moon is a new moon, because the unlit side of the moon will be facing us.

And the only time the gravitational pulls of the Sun and Moon are pulling in exactly the same direction, is during a solar eclipse. So I'm assuming the tides will be greater in that brief period.

Do you guys know of anything else that happens during a solar eclipse? And effect on animals? plants?

There was a slight earthquake in New Jersey today, which almost never happens. I wonder if this event will trigger a few earthquakes?

Of course no earthquakes, the pull or position of the moon and sun has zero effect on quakes (it's an Earth thing) Is this a trick question? As to stirring up tides along it's trajectory, no idea. Animals do react to eclipses a bit. I understand some institutions are going to observe their reactions on this one.

I had considered going to Dallas, or San Antonio in which you could see the totality, but not happening. You are a lucky feller to be able to witness the whole thing, hope the weather stays clear. In the Houston area we may get 94 percent so best I will ever witness.

Well, the tides are a result of the pull of the Moon, so I thought maybe the combined pull...mostly the sudden increase...and then sudden decrease.... in the pull...all in one direction, .might have an effect on the Earth's crust.

I just asked Alexa, she did not really answer it.

I suppose you could argue that a lined up gravitational pull of sun and moon together on a certain trajectory might have a really infinitesimally tiny effect on the crust if it was really prone to having a quake, would it tip it over the edge though, debatable. One things for sure, a slight tipping of the CO'2 levels are going to and are having a huge effect on us.

High tides occur along the path of a solar eclipse because of the alignment of the Sun, moon and Earth. The combined gravitational pull of the Sun and moon cause high tides in the path of the alignment, meaning that low tides occur at ninety degrees from the path of the solar eclipse.

I just read a request from a local 'do good' group - they want people to drop off the solar eclipsed glasses later next week - so they can be boxed up and sent to Chile where an eclipse will happen in the next few months.

My son bought 50 pr of eclipse 'glasses' - been handing them out to neighbors and family. I think the cost was about 90 cents per pair.

This group wants all the folks we gave the glasses to - to drive them to a specific location and drop them off - where they will be 'packaged' and mailed to Chile where they will be opened and distributed to a rather large area. Then the group will claim they are 'saving the planet'. You can't make this stuff up....

My daughter ordered the glasses for everyone, and we're looking forward to observing this rare event. It may not be in direct alignment with the OP's question... but The Devil's Comet is also believed to be passing by during this eclipse as well.

Did you guys know that nearly the whole US will see at least a partial eclipse for a few minutes.

One thing I learned that I didn't know was that the Moon doesn't have a perfectly circular orbit around the Earth. So most solar eclipses are when the Moon is smaller in the sky, and won't cover the entire Sun.

Most eclipses are called Annular, and the Sun isn't totally blocked. And as the Moon's orbit around the Earth expands (The Moon is slowly spinning away from us), total eclipses will become more rare and then stop altogether.

So....this will be the only total solar eclipse in the US in our lifetimes. Monday at 3PM, I'll be out there looking.

EDIT: iam watching the news and all the hubbub. I admit iam getting a little excited as we get closer and closer to the eclipse. It is actually pretty neat

I did not watch it. I was outside all day busy helping someone. We had a lot of clouds in the area anyway. The temperature dropped a lot during that time frame. Instead, I watched the highlights on the evening news.

We looked without the glasses. It was nearly as dark as night outside, and the solar corona seen outside the Moon was spectacular. We could even see Jupiter and Venus with the naked eye.

I can imagine seeing this thousands of years ago, and thinking it was supernatural.

A clear day....then darkness, and the Moon eats the Sun...the birds go crazy, the temperature drops...and the winds die.....

Someone is getting sacrificed.

Claude and I have had lunch two or three times. Generally, we discuss how weird you people are. Claude tells stories and I get in digs where I may.

Claude is a natural talker and I'm more of a natural listener. I subscribe to the belief that one should keep his mouth closed and let others think he is a fool rather than open it and remove all doubt. Claude has never heard this maxim (probably because he was too busy talking).

This post really upset me.

Are you saying there were actually times when you could get a word in? Then I didn't do my job.

I was on the phone with a close friend, and after an hour or so, I said "I just noticed that I'm the one talking about 80% of the time". She said "What do you think that means?"

I said "it means that you are stealing my spotlight 20% of the time. Unforgivable."

The truth is, there aren't that many people I enjoy talking with. On the rare occasion I get to talk to someone I actually like....I tend to do most of the talking. I'm not sure why I'm like that.

When my wife and I are gone for at least a few hours...when we walk through the door, our cat Mackie rolls around on the floor frantically......like the excitement is too much for him. I suspect there's a little of that in me too.

I must say it's funny to see the human species go 'ga-ga' over such matters. And the way the Media hypes this event
is like nothing I have seen in a long time.

Btw, i was literally stuck in a patient waiting room for my annual physical while the doctor and nurses literally left the office to go outside and view the darkness lol

Which makes me wonder; maybe if we showed the same level of Passion we had over this eclipse as we have towards being kind and caring for one another... well maybe just maybe the World would be a much better place to live in!!
