The Opening Ceremony in Paris is live this afternoon - and NBC will replay it tonight in prime time.

I've just watched the first part and I am so impressed. Usually opening ceremonies go from really fancy to boring - but this one is truly amazing. All the teams are on boats going down the Seine while all along that route on both sides...there are stories being told. Thousands of dancers, fantastic music and costumes, history of France recreated and events flowing quickly from one to another. All that time there is one person in an odd costume who is carrying the torch over rooftops and through factories, over a superlong zip line, etc....it is the most captivating start to an Olympics I've ever seen.

If you get a chance to watch it tonight, I'd recommend it.

    Thanks.

    Will check it out.

I see it's on NBC again at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time.

I was surprised, as well. I was, however, surprised that they used several non-French performers. I'm sure millions of Frenchmen are nonplussed by that.

Did it bring tears of joy to your sparkling eyes?

I will only watch it if you cried.

I'm not a crier. But I am easily bored - and this did NOT bore me.

Your trying to tell me that the French did something good for a change?

Yup - they got this one right. I was watching the live event and it was amazing how good the camera work was and how complex the planning was. I expect it's better on TV than in person as you can see it all.

I watched a couple of hours , off and on. It was really impressive.

Loved Snoop in the midst of it. So refreshing and just fun. Same with Peyton Manning and Kelly Clarkson

I have to take it back - the ending brought tears to my eyes. Celine Dion singing L'Hymne à l'amour - perfect performance of a beautiful song.

45,000 volunteers for that opening ceremoney...wow.

    You just spoiled the ending.

To be honest watched the first hour skipping the boring bits, (rap, athletes going down the river, lady with the funny pink pom poms).

The ad's, glad l taped it, (yes Mark with a video recorder) and may watch it on that than endure the ad's and boring bits on tv.

Channel 9, (in AU) had it in four parts but now after trying to log back in l can only get it as a no fast forward 6 hour onslaught only, l will go back to the one on video.

Stan in AU has it in 4k anyone here trying that?

But to be honest good views of Notre Dame and the city so far, (even with the rain) most likely with more to come so l will give them credit for that.

Since the ceremony was 3 hrs...6 is a lot of commercials.

I recorded it and the only things I FF through were a few commercials (though most were split screen so you didn't miss anything) and in the middle where all they were showing were the teams.

There was NO way to spoil that ending.

What I didn't like was the commentator who just KEPT talking about the rain...ok, it's raining...so what? No need to mention it every other sentence. Today social media is panning Manning and Clarkson - but they were fine IMO because they didn't talk the entire time. Trico seemed to be of the 'sports' type commenting - where they just can't shut up.

Ok, l set it for 6, and at least in Australia it was 3.3 hours, (they crapped on for half an hour before it started) and glad l did the streaming version had the start missing which l saw on the recorded version

Agreed she put on a strong performance, probably killed her.

We had better ones here that shut up occasionally and talked through most of that submarine Minions skit which was no real loss, and l have seen the whole thing now and l will only say it had its moments, with the Fashion Weird Last Supper not being one of them.

Yeah, that was a little weird.

And, as a commentator pointed out, the famous portrait was done by an Italian artist and is on display in Italy.

So, I also didn't really get the whole point...

but overall it's been good so far.

tbh I have mixed views on this.

Previous ceremonies have been incredibly choreographed, an' make instantly eye-catchin' TV viewin'.

Mom is a big fan of the Yookay romp in 2012, ima Korea gal bcs the choreography was so sublime.

In this respect, havin' evrythin' in one place, all supah televisyool is real cool for instant storytellin'.

But the French narrative hit deepah.

Evrywan gaht soaked, for sure ... an' the TV experience was less polished than you mighta wanted for no kinda spectacle.

At times, partsa the story slowed down.

But what was so cool was how so mucha it was immediately accessible for all kindsa people.

You didn't have to BE THERE (in the stadium/crucible of perfection), you could kinda jus' SHOW UP THERE.

Mosta Paris could wandah in from sumplace.

Evrywan was parta this ... more people than evah before could walk up an' touch on what was gowin' on.

    Egalité, yanno.

Kinda messy, kinda beautiful, kinda for evrywan here.

So, yeah, as mixed media choreography, it was clunkiah than stuff we seen before, but real incloosive.

Evrywan' competin', evrywan watchin', evrywan with heart & soul in the game.

Been a century since Paris hosted, an it is an opportoon time to ask 'em back.

You would wish for this spirit of egalité to persist beyond yuh mortal days ...
