I guess California doesn't get much snow...last couple years in Ohio we haven't got a whole lot either. We do get ice though...but rainy days might be a little more difficult to send your car out to work for you while you lay in bed and watch soaps all day

I never liked the autonomous idea probably because of devout fans dying while in their self driving Tesla's that got confused.

But the trials that Google and others are running in California is showing higher safety rates than human driving.

But the Archelles heel of all of this is machine parts get old which could lead to fatal accidents and all of these trials are in new cars with mint condition electronics and very likely squeaky clean sensors.

Bottom line is get one of those and as long as you service it once a year or more you may be fine.

I am in the process of getting a semi new car since my Pulsar GX 1988 model, (l know Mark) is un-serviceable.

Or the parameters it used for the petrol fuel mix on cold mornings has shifted due to age of parts, which means the service technicials are guessing. Not bad the engine lasted 37 years, but Nissan was very reliable back then not now though.

I guess EV's are fine since they have to be replaced every decade or 7 tears, but this is a long way off for the general population.

Hybrids are becoming more popular in Australia at least Toyota thinks so, and EV's less so and l did see one Tesla get driven out of the car dealership making no noise at all, and said "scary".

That's an interesting point you raised there about the Tesla making no noise. Inside this guys Tesla, it sounded like the average sound of of a car running, noise wise. However, the guy said that the car actually makes little to no noise and they added in a lot of the sound to let you know the cars running. Generally it was only for our familiarity. So there might be a hidden speaker for generating this perhaps?

I would also hope that if a camera or sensor was not functioning properly the computer should pick this up and not allow autonomous driving to operate until cleaned or repaired.

I will happily let you be a guinea pig until they work out all the Windows blue screen of death type "features." LOL You don't want your car rebooting on the freeway.

I know they say this is the future. I'm just not convinced the technology is there yet.

Unfortunately if you decide to pull the battery and have had it for 20 years the computer that notices that may be faulty as well as the shifting benchmarks due to age.

Agreed it stops on the freeway with a blue screen saying "updates commencing please stand by" while a truck is bearing down on you, and you are seeing your life flash before your eyes while "Another one Bites the dust on the radio" or should that be "knocking at Heavens Door".

Tesla has a lot of issues with their self-driving features. Companies like Waymo that use Lidar are having better results. Musk refuses to look at other methods besides his camera versions. I wouldn't be surprised if a major class action suit is filed against Tesla. China is into self-driving with Hesai being the top company there.

Just because Tesla's EVs have self-driving vehicles. Several other companies are working to incorporate ADAS into ICE vehicles or Hybirds. But - you have to start somewhere.



Musk is focused on the method that resulted from HIS vision. Musk is often first in development of new technology...then others redesign what he started, refine the processes and say 'look, we're better'.



Class action suits are a dime a dozen these days - keep the lawyers in tennis clothes, I guess. Consumers should share some of the obligation for choosing what they will buy and how it will be used.

These little robots have become a common sight in the nearby college town. They are very polite and always say 'thank you'.

Speaking of self-driving, in the future the feature would be great for the elderly who lose their driving skills. Plus some of the bad drivers out there. Just think someone on a long trip gets tired. Kick in the autonomous driving feature, sit back, and relax instead of putting others in danger.

Auto accidents happen because of a difference in speed or driver error. One car going too slow - another too fast ...someone looking at their phone or dozing off or driving erratically.


If all the cars on the road maintained a specific distance from each other (automatically) and all on the highway drove at the same speed - lives would be saved, hospitals less crowded. On and off ramps would be slower lanes but still could maintain a specific speed. Bonus might well be you'd get there faster, too.


Maybe it could go a step further and immobilize any drivers showing symptoms of road rage....THAT would be a winner.

We still have scientists frothing at the mouth over this tech, and really want it to happen, or it seems if we had a robot driving a autonomous car it would be perfect.

I won't say it, but everyone saying it is safe and trials with new sensors and new everything over short time frames isn't testing it is more of a PR stunt.

Testing this in the real world with a million cars over a decade is testing.

Even with accidents, I don't think cars on auto pilot would do worse than that. If you could eliminate impaired drivers (drunks/drugs) and distracted drivers (phones/texts) that alone would probably cut the number of deaths at least in half.

I was reading an article recently that more and more autonomous cars are allegedly detecting ghosts. Cars grind to a halt because they see an invisible obstruction ahead. This shows up on the car screens as matchstick figures or something more elaborate. Also, the locations they stop at are often places where people have died on the road and sometimes their are memorials nearby.

The cars use, in part, the same technology that ghost hunters use to pick up invisible presences.
