the Beatles were way ahead of their time. Many of their songs were genius.

But for overall power, musicianship, and melodic superiority well Led Zeppelin is my pick for the greatest rock group of all time.

You ?

Nope, not even comparable. Zep produced a handful of memorable rock songs in terms of the riffs and some had melodic content and were memorable as tunes and yes, they could play their instruments well so better drumming, lead guitar etc.

That's where it ends. The Beatles wrote the best part of 300 songs, many were excellent, some great and others, good. For sheer volume of quality songs, the beatles win hands down. Zeps not even on the radar for that.

I saw Zep at Earl's Court London in 1975. They were good but not the best live band I'd ever seen by a long shot. The worst bit was when Plant forgot the lyrics for some of stairway to heaven, sacrilege, Lol.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here, Mark.

The Beatles ain't got nothing on Zep. In fact, as far as I recall, John and Paul didn't write a single song about hobbits or Mordor. LZ for the win.

I should have guessed you would identify more with a band that writes songs about Hobbits.

I prefer the Who, Styx, and Eagles over Led Zeppelin any day. However, I do like their music.

Greatest rock group of all time? You mean like the Carpenters or Air Supply?

I didn't mention other heavy rock favorites like the Bee Gees, Chicago, Kenny Rogers, or Barry Manilow.

I only really like one Zeppelin song. Lynyrd Skynyrd would be up in the rankings for me.

          I blinked at Kenny Rogers.

I grew up in a Country household. If you told my dad Kenny was Rock, he would've had words with you outside. Those "words" would've physically hurt.

I pretty much dislike all country except for a song here or there, but I grew up with Kenny and love his stuff. Yeah, I know he's not rock at all. Just joking about my picks above.

You forgot "The Knack," the band that was supposed to replace the Beatles ;>) I see Chicago mentioned above, they churned out a lot of music in their history. Chicago will never make it to the top of most people's lists. Yet still very popular, now Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is

I happened upon this today. 50 something years after the song came out, they finally have an official video.

    Interesting.

Speaking of Zeppelin, I have always loved Stairway to Heaven, even though I never really liked or listened to much else from them.

When I got enthralled with it, what 45 years ago!!??!!, some people were giving the warning about playing it backwards because you would supposedly get a different set of lyrics. Luckily, I never listened to it backwards LOL so I survived.

A few years ago, I heard the Heart version at the Kennedy Center Honors, and now I can't stop listening to it.

As much as it's overplayed, if you get down to the nut and bolts of the song it is truly a masterpiece

Led Zeppelin, Def Leppard, Beatles, and Rolling Stones.. - these are the greatest musicians of all time. I remember listening to their records on cold evenings.
