I know the word "cinema" isn't usually used. What is? Is it the "movie theatre"? Ot just the "theatre"? Or simply "the movies"? Or something else?

(If you were searching for show times in your local town or area, for example, what would you type into Google? "My town movies", "My town movie theatre", or "My town something else"?)

Most all of them work, except we spell theatre , theater.
We have Cinema 6 and Cinema 8 or however many screens they have. We also have Cinemaplexes, Movie Theaters.
When going to the movies, we normally say I'm going to the movies.
When searching online I'll type in the name of the theater.

If I want to impress people, I'll say something like...

"I am on my way to the cinema to absorb myself in a fine film".

If I just want to get the point across I'll say something like.

      "Movies...later!"

I've always said "going to the movies" or occasionally "the movie theater". Mostly these days, I say what Thom said because it's crazy pricing when I can just watch a DVD at home. But some people do say cinema over here, too, at least in my area.

Yeah, depending on if I'm going to watch something with somebody or alone, I'd either call it what ThomM said, or KJ said.

"I am on my way to the cinema to absorb myself in a fine film".

I usually say "go see a movie" or "see a movie in the theater" to differentiate between going out and renting. I grew up in the south, though, and when I was young, we would say "go to the show."
