Well...um...It's done.

Sal...it ain't commercial...that's for sure.

How do I put this?

Well, maybe this will help.

rhapsody [ˈræpsədɪ]n pl -dies1. (Music, other) Music a composition free in structure and highly emotional in character

Aside from being a performance and mixing nightmare, this thing is all over
the place. I can honestly say I have never done anything quite like this
before.

Anyway, don't hold back folks. Sal and I are big boys and girls.

Lyrics are below video

I can feel you, feel cold radiate from your soul
embers smother and die deep beneath
don't leave me to freeze Don't you do this to me
Can't you reach deep - stoke the flicker to flame?
We can't dance when I'm chilled with his blame.

It wasn't me who did this to you
didn't misuse youwon't abuse you
this ain't what was - but will this ever be?
Can't console what I can't hold
Chained in ice, love can't breathe, it won't unfold

(Chorus)
Don't freeze me out Don't freeze me out
I'm done with this dead drill - getting sick from all your chill
Done with all your ice - Heed close, my last advice
Don't you freeze me out

What will it take for me to reach you?
My mind is so numb I can not feel you.
Ice falls from lips - I can't heal you
My advice, your last chance
warm my hands we can dance
Blow more frost and I will grieve you.

(Chorus - Twice)
Don't freeze me out Don't freeze me out
I'm done with this dead drill - getting sick from all your chill
Done with all your ice - Heed close, my last advice
Don't -you - freeze - me - out

I'm always blown away how folks can write lyrics and music and make it look so easy. I know it's not, but you guys put this together really fast.

Thanks for sharing this, btw. It's a gas to watch all this unfold.

    Sal's a poet afterall...

Not trying to step on your thread here Steven, but now I can see why Sal was asking me if I was "gonna dance in a mankini or anything".

    Not in this weather!!!!!!!!

So let me axt you this...Is this like a first take and then you refine it a bit, or this the final take.

The reason I ask is it would be a lot of fun to make a music video using this song but the production qualities would need a little help. That's not a knock, just sayin'...

That's if you're cool with it...

Bill it's just a rough demo. If a publisher shows some interest, then we'll
invest in a professional recording. Like I said, this was a mixing and
arranging nightmate because there is so much going on in it and I don't
      have a $100,000 recording studio.

        Slacker...

J/K, It amazes me you can produce what you do. Especially in such a short time.

You might want to do a little collaboration with Caliban on this tune and see what he can add pointerwise.

        Other than that..

I'm thinking Pat Benatar could tear that one up...!

I'm not even going to begin to critique the song, I'm no song critic. But I know what I like and don't like.

Usually, what I like makes me want to move. And buddy when you poured on the coal at that first chorus I stood up so fast I whacked my head on a cabinet....

Powerful lyrics Sal, and pretty damn decent job you did with it Steven.

    I'm impressed.

Thanks Dave. Sal deserves most of the credit for this one. Her writing is
so unusual, at least for me, that it got THAT out of me...and I don't
normally do songs like that...if you heard some of my power pop syrupy
      concoctions.

Honestly, I don't even know where this came from.

Actually I'm just a composer. Hopefully, a publisher, without a tin ear, will
recognize the potential (if any) and contract it. Then he'll pitch it to some
A&R guys in this genre who, hopefully, will also not have a tin ear and
recognize the potential, have a group in mind to record it, one that can
actually play worth a sh*t, and THEN, adding to that a decent studio,
you'll have a finished recording that you'll be listening to on your radio.

In other words, the polish ain't gonna be coming from the likes of me.

I just played this for my wife on our stereo system.

Let me tell you, this sucker rocks! The first chorus and that finale just
sent me flying and my wife actually came out of the kitchen to listen.

The lyrics kind of disturbed her a little bit, but you have to understand,
this is a gal who listens to Christian Rock and Clay Aiken.

But she said to me, and I quote, "Well, you're a real rocker now."

        Thank you Sal.

Oh, and she said it was VERY catchy.

Heck, I've listened to it about 10 times tonight (not counting all the
playbacks during mixdown) and I'm still crazy about it.

My heart's actually pumping like mad after listening to it.

Hell, commercial or not...I'm sending this to every alternative publisher I
        can think of.

Now I just gotta get my hands on the latest Songwriters Market.

Well Sal said to me (she probably doesn't remember this) that she visioned
it starting out slow and then building up.

I don't normally do tunes like that. Either they're mellow throughout or they
start out rocking right away, albeit moderately so. (I'm no Led Zep)

But between her lyrics and her vision, I came up with something that,
on my own, would have never happened.

And let me tell you, the first verse changed about 7 times before it ended
        up like it did.

Oh and for those wondering, that song was recorded with a $50 nylon 6
string and a $100 Squire Strat.

We're talking real low budget here.

Heck, the digital recorder I used is only $600.

This gives new meaning to the term "garage band".

I like it - great job!

(I actually listened to it twice in a row...)

It's an interesting song; at the start it reminded me a bit of 70s music... then at 1:04 made me think of Jethro Tull... then as it progressed made me think of 80s music and a bit of The Sounds (namely http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjY4Wj_-Zec&NR=1)

Like Profit-smart said, I think I liked it more and more as it went on (especially when the "oozing ahhs" came in and at 3:54 when the synthesizer was added...)

I really like the voice and the song is definitely catchy. I could definitely see this on the radio, although to be "mainstream" (whether that's what you want or not) might require you to cut out the acoustic part (?)

Anyway - glad I stumbled upon this post - keep the tunes coming!

      Cheers,
      David

Hey, Sal ... very interesting lyrics -- evocative. Different people will interpret different meanings from them, depending on their own perspective and moods. That's the way to do it!

    Hey congratulations HeySal and Steven.

The start is somewhat "choppy." The chorus, however, is really good and quite catchy. I can see Freeze as a popular song with some editing and improvement.

I'm not 100% keen on the first sentence of the chorus. I think it has to be more "melodic," if that makes sense. Even so, it's one of those songs that grows on you. (I've listened to it 4 times now.)

So good job. And, keep us updated.

    Sal & Steve,

Your song is simply amazing. I am impressed. I know it's a rough demo, but I can picture hearing a refined version of this on the radio. This has so much more emotion than most of the crap out there today.

Seeing how quickly you two put this all together, my suggestion, write a few more tracks together, put together a demo cd, and figure out how to pursue it.

Seeing how quickly you two put this all together, my suggestion, write a few more tracks together, put together a demo cd, and figure out how to pursue it.

Gee Jared - I think Steve and I are mutually surprised enough right now that it will be just a tad before we do much other than breath for a bit here.

There are a few spots that will take some brush up, mostly because I gave him hell to work with, but I can see that the second verse is where our idea of this thing diverged the most. That was where Disturbed would have gone guttural with it LOL. Frankly my lyrics just didn't hit verse level on that one and he really came through from being handed a raw deal.

I'm really excited by the responses so far though - and I am sure he is, too.

        Sal, the word is tempo.

If you're going to be a rock star you need to know these things.

Now quit screwing around here and start working on the 'B' side.

Folks, there are two ways to write songs.

        1. Technically
        2. Emotionally

After reading Sal's lyrics, and having never been handed anything like them
before, I realized that my only shot at this was going with gut and
abandoning the "formula" stuff, which is why you essentially ended up with
a rhapsody and a song that was all over the place.

Also, Sal gave me some bands to listen to before I wrote this, but I didn't
because I didn't want to be influenced by anybody but my natural influences.

        Who are they?

They're a who's who of rock music that could fill up a museum, but I'll give
you my main influences throughout the years.

        The Beatles
        The Monkees
        The Partidge Family
        Badfinger
        Emerson Lake and Palmer
        Yes
        Genesis
        Triumvirat
        Starcastle
        Renaissance
        Within Temptation
        The Motors
        The Clash
        Elvis Costello
        The Movies
        Jellyfish

With all that running through me (I've studied all their music intensively)
you can imagine that I've got a mass of conflicting feelings inside whenever
I write something, which is why, if you heard some of my older stuff, you'd
find I'm all over the place.

In fact, I may one day start a "Steven Wagenheim Songbook" thread so
you can hear how many styles I've written for.

Problem is, it inevitably ends up that in any ONE song, many styles will
emerge. If you listen to this one, you'll hear at least 3 influences.

        It's really crowded in here.

I've never written anything just for fame and fortune, though I wouldn't
spit at it if it landed in my lap, but have always written for the pure love
of it. And yes, I've written some crap...as you will hear soon...but I've
always enjoyed creating it...even if some of it I can't listen to anymore.

Anyway, I'm not sure why I'm sharing all this. But I do know this much.
The person I feel best for in all this, is not myself...but Sal.

It's a feeling I can't describe knowing how much this meant to her, which
is why I was actually petrified to do this in the first place. But I figured,
at worse, we'd get a good laugh out of it if the whole thing just sucked
        wind.

My daughter likes it, which may or may not be a good thing as most of
the groups she likes are NOT mainstream. But she thought it was very
catchy and she does have a contact in the business who books bands at
local clubs in NY. Maybe he'll know somebody might want to record this.

        You never know.

Well...that's all I got for now...until I think of something else I want to say.

I actually like the rough, "lo-fi" sound. I'm a big fan of garage rock, and this has a DIY appeal that's right up my alley. The timbre of the vocal line is what grabs me.

And, as per Mr. Motley's suggestion for a band name...Salenheim is good. But what about Salenheim Steamroller? Or Salenheim Doll. Pronounced Salen Heimdoll = Heimdall. Okay, I like the Heimdall reference, but I'm guessing most people aren't that into Norse mythology.

    But, assuming it is Salenheim...

You could debut at a museum in NYC and call it...

Well, Steve does have some good licks in that piece the way he manuverors around the fretboard.

Steve - a LOT of music I listen to is all over the place.......and that is why I like it. It's interesting. You don't have the whole song just because you can hum one line of it.
Some of the Intense rock I listen to goes from soft and mellow to severe rage real fast - and I love it.

It's true that what you've, we've, done isn't mainstream stuff - but I never was a mainstream kind of rocker, either. Nothing wrong with appealing more to one group than others. Once things get too generic all the meaning just gets wiped out into nothingness as far as I'm concerned.........and what you did with my words didn't even start to melt them into the abyss. It just awed me, that without really a background in the types of music that churn me, that you could hit it like you did. Heck - we didn't even get to talk on the phone about it.

Music by osmosis. Can't grudge that one even just a little bit.

What ya think? Ready for Primus 2010? LMAO.

      Well.........you get the idea.

Nine Inch Nails, I am familiar with their work. I like their one song "Closer"
though in comparison to some of their other material, that would be
      considered almost commercial.

When I was heavily into keyboard rock, and subscribed to Contemporary
Keyboard Magazine, they did an interview with Trent Reznor and how he
came up with his unusual sounds.

Nine Inch Nails, on that level (electronically) has always been one of my
favorite bands because of what they could get out of a synthesizer, though
I have to admit that their music, many times, went right over my head,

The rest, especially Tool, Megadeth, and Nickelback, I have heard of and
of course Nickelback is actually pretty mainstream. My daughter likes them
a lot. Tool and Megadeth, I'd have to have a couple of songs played for
      me to recognize them.

I also like Dragonforce, though I am sure for hard core metal heads, these
guys are probably too glitzy and showoff-y.

Anyway, that's quite a list of influences there.

Remind me never to piss you off.

Steve -- here's one for you. You said your wife likes Christian Rock? Here's some Christian metal from my side of the fence. This is rather epic so you get my favorite half of Part two of 10,000 days in the Fire from Tool. Note how the song winds down around 4.46 and completely drops to mellow at abour 5.30 - 6.00 somewhere. This is just rakingly emotive.

But my favorite is Disturbed and you've already been introduced to them.

I finally got to listen to this. It's interesting when you've listened to so
much music over 50 plus years what you pick up from songs.

First of all, before I get to that, this song is occasionally played on WRXP.

Anyway, I noticed a lot of mid to late 1960s influence here.

Listen to this 1968 Chambers brothers hit "Time Has Come Today"

      They're considered a "soul" group but there's a lot of 60s psychedelica
      in this song.

Cripes - I'm still listening to this on and off. I still like it.

Whether you clean it up before you send it out, or whether you send it as is, I think that SOMEONE will want it. It just depends on WHO picks it up whether the outcome sounds more like the mainstream or more like hard metal in the long run.

The truth is - it's just good no matter what gets done to it.

I'm proud to be associated with it, Steve.

That's really all this business is...mixing things together to create the illusion

Take prog rock of the 70s. That was rock and roll and classical, which to this

    Hey Steven,

I didnt think about it before; but I thought I'd share a tip with you.

I spent most of my highschool years djing, playing in bands, etc.

In lieu of renting studio time, heres an easy way to get semi-studio quality recording at home.

#1-Record your track, singing and playing-like you already have.

#2-Get a set of headphones, play in tempo with just the guitar. Record it, and only it.

#3-Take the guitar recording, play it via headphones and record your vocals.

#4-Sync the two using a piece of mixing software. Sony ACID was my favourite.

You can get a 30 day demo for free I believe.

A bit intensive, but I thought you might find it useful.

    Regards,

      Regards,

Jordan, I appreciate the tips. I have a recording studio and know how
      to lay down tracks.

The problem with this particular recording (if there is indeed a problem with
it) is that I only have 6 tracks and 2 master tracks for bouncing. Once the
6 tracks are used, I have to start bouncing and that's when things start
      getting difficult to mix.

Here's what I have going on in this song per track so you understand what
a nightmare I had to deal with.

      Track 1 - Acoustic Guitar
Track 2 - Rhythm Electric Guitar
Track 3 - Rhythm Electric Guitar (to get that stereo guitar sound)
Track 4 and 5 - Synth Bass in stereo
Track 6 and 7 - Synth bass drum and snare in stereo
Track 8 and 9 - Synth cymbals in stereo
Track 10 - Lead Electric Guitar
Track 11 - Lead Electric Guitar
      Track 12 - Lead Vocal
      Track 13 - Background Vocals
Track 14 - Background Vocals (to get stereo effect)
      Track 15 and 16 - Synth Strings
Track 17 and 18 - Synth wind effects
Track 19 and 20 - Lead synth strings (for top notes at end)

Add to this that there is a lot going on at one time, the challenge of
squeezing all that into a 6 track digital recorder is just that...one hell of
      a challenge.

Oh, and I've been making my own recordings for over 25 years, thank you.

In other words...I'm not a rookie.

I think I just got owned.

:p Good point steven. I didnt take into account the mixing you obviously have going on.

Sounds like your still using a traditional mixer though; just check out Sony Acid-You wont regret it-If youve been producing your own music for 25 years, you'll LOVE it.

Were talking about a unlimited track mixer, with thousands of plugins (effects) and just about anything else you can dream of.

All you really need to use it properly is a good quality mic, and ideally some converters to hook your instruments into your PC for direct recording (In lieu of that, a mic still works)

I guess I'm spoiled-When I took my first dive into mixing and djing software like Sony Acid was already readily available.

I dont expect you'll have much trouble picking it p either; the visual interface is reminiscent of a traditional mixer.

And no-theres nothing wrong with it But I know your a musician; and if were anything its perfectionists in regards to our work.

I wouldnt have commented if I didnt like it :p and I know its just a demo.

Anyways I wont drill you anymore; your the one with the expertise here-not me.

Actually, I'm not using ANY mixer.

You are obviously under the impression that all of that is going on
simultaneously because I've got a whole freaking band here playing live.

      WRONG.

I am a ONE MAN SHOW.

I play all the parts...ONE AT A TIME.

So there is nothing to mix other than what's laid down on the Boss CD600
digital recorder and then bouncing things around once I run out of tracks.

Yeah, I wish I had a whole band. It would make this nightmare a hell of
      a lot easier.

But YOU try playing 20 tracks of music BY YOURSELF with no help and
see if YOU can get it to sound any better on a 6 track digital recorder.

      GOOD LUCK.

PS - One day, I hope to be able to afford a 32 track semi pro studio in
      house.

Until then, I'll just have to make do with my little Boss CD600.

away pro studios from 30 years ago. I get that. But if I try installing one
more thing on this PC, it's going to turn into yesterday's pasta.

Plus, my studio is nowhere near my PC, so I would have to move everything
and I mean EVERYTHING into the vicinity. That is not something I look forward
to doing on a GOOD day.

          Maybe someday...but just not today.

Bill, even if you could, you can only simulate an electric guitar sound. To get
a REAL electric guitar sound, with all the actual things you can do with an
electric guitar, you need a REAL electric guitar.

Some instruments can be simulated decently, but when it comes to a guitar,
              forget it...nothing comes close IMO.

Same thing with real strings versus synth strings...a fair substitute at best.

You can-Though your limited if, like steven says you dont have any instruments you can control yourself.

You just buy packs of "loops", mix them together as you like; and add your vocals on top of it.

Its much easier to have an adapter for your guitar, so you get high quality sound *you* can control. (Try writing a song using a bunch of random chords that sound identical!).

I used to use a piece of software called "Guitar Pro" To write songs when I was away from home; any synth guitar always ends up sounding like something out of a videogame.

One other thing you gotta understand, and I realize this is an intangible
                that most people don't get.

I'm old, and I'm used to working in a real studio with keyboard and
traditional recording equipment. I get so inspired when I'm there.

When I'm sitting at the PC trying to write "music" I feel almost nothing.

I don't expect you to understand that being a young kid, but I've done
my best work in those "old fashioned" studios. There is something cold
                and impersonal about PC software.

No No-I do understand. I play piano; and while I keep a keyboard around it always feels "dry" to play it. I'm much more fruitful when I play on the real deal. (Sadly, thats sitting about 2000 miles away right now)

And to be honest, it takes alot more skill to do things your way. I've dabbled in both, and while I can use hardware; I'm 100x better with software.

These programs were created to make things as easy as possible; its why you have thousands of self proclaimed "Mixers" and "Djs" in every suburb in America.

On your end, you have more power and direct control over what you do; the quality of hardware production IS superior to software production.

on the flipside software lets you use functions that (like you said) you would otherwise need an extravagantly expensive studio to produce.

Anyways, once a label picks you up you'll have all the equipment you could ever need.

Ah, well, as far as a label picking me up...I'm just a songwriter...not a
                    performer.

My goal is to get my song to a publisher who doesn't have a tin ear, who
will then get it to an A&R guy who also doesn't have a tin ear who will
then give it to one of his acts to record.

Me? I'm a behind the scenes guy.

Actually, the reason I was asking is that I'm doing a lot of short one minute videos and it would be nice just to be able to create some short music clips to add background music.

I know lots of sites where I can get short music clips, but I was curious about making my own.

I do have a 1964 Gibson SG Standard that Ive had for over 30+ years, in case you're wondering about the electric guitar thingy...

                        DOH!!!!!!!

I learn something everyday...Mine's not the "Standard" model, I have the "Special". The big difference is in the tail piece and pick-ups. Mine has the P-80s and not the 'Humbuckings'. I guess owning it for so long has clouded my memory as to the true model.

It's still a very valuable guitar, here's a link in case anyone wants to compare it to the link Dave put up:

Vintage Gibson Guitars: Gibson SG Special

Years ago I thought about refinishing the back of it due to all the wear and tear from playing so I did a bunch of tests with woods and finishes to see what exactly I had on my hands.

Turns out the finish is candy apple red (cherry) over walnut. I took it to a guitar shop and was telling the owner that I thought about refinishing it, and he looked at me and said "WHAT ARE YOU, NUTS! You'll kill the value of it."

                        So I didn't.

                        KJ

Btw, thank you both for appreciating Gibson guitars. They truly are treasures.

When I was about 15, I was rummaging through my grandmas attic looking for something; and I hit my foot something at the bottom of a big pile of boxes. Now this attic was *full* of stuff, but I decided to see what it was anyways-it was to hard to be a cardboard box.

So I look down, and just barely visible is a tiny piece of leather; when I touch it I wonder if.. maybe...

two or three hours later, I get all the boxes off; and I find a dirty dust covered guitar case. I open it up-and what do I find?

    One of these

Turns out it was my Dads. It was put up there because it needed alot of restoration; the fretboard was coming unglued, two of the tuning knobs were missing, and one of the pickups was shot.

He'd been pretty hard on it, gotten a a new guitar; and forgot about it for all those years.

Needless to say I was tickled pink; I spent every dime I had restoring that thing for a good 6 months. I was the envy of all my bandmates.

I'm guessing 1968 because that year Gibson offered the ES-335 style neck as an option. It joins the body at the 19th fret...standard is 15th fret(?) for the ES330.

Dave, I think this could be a 335 (same basic family as the 330) because you are right about the neck placement, and if you look at the pick guard it is definitely the one used on the ES-335.

You know what he replaced it with-instead of restoring it?

    A $200 BC Rich

The funny part is in the when he stashed the thing away he could have repaired it far cheaper than what it cost me so many years later. Partly my fault though; I insisted on finding a set of vintage P90 pickups. I went stock at the guitar shop with everything but those and the knobs.

Profit-Smart........uh.......no. I didn't put a lot of work into it. I can't speak for Steve, because I have no clue what he did. Listening to his list to you, he did much more than I did. When I started writing it just kind of came to me once I got one line down. Whatever Steve did, he did it really fast, too. One day he says "Mid-February" the next day he's got the darn thing posted in the forum.

I think the only reason it jerked either of us was because it was just something neither one of us did before. SO no - no work here on this end. Of the two of us........only Steve knows what you are talking about.

Profit-Smart, in echoing what Sal said, I've been writing songs long enough
(over 25 years) that I could probably crank out a song in a couple of
hours if I really wanted to.

This one took me about a day, on and off. I started at like 10 AM and
finished, well whenever time I actually posted the song, which I think was
sometime that evening. Just look at the timestamp of the forum and
      subtract about 6 hours.

The longest I ever spent on one song was about 3 days. I told Sal mid
February because with having to run my business and with everything
else I've been doing, I just didn't think I'd get to it until then. But I had
a break in my schedule so I just decided to sit down and do it.

Honestly, I was anxious to get to work on it because I really loved the
lyrics. They were a lot different from anything I had ever done before so
I wanted to see what I could come up with.

Sometimes, the writing is a lot more fun than listening to the finished
      product.

Kind of like being a product creator.
