Do businesses hire according to a persons academic level first or people skills?

One year we had group of business owners come into our school to answer questions about what they expected from graduates. Many things were discussed but one topic was whether employers hired graduates according to their academic achievements or ability to work with others. What do you think it should be based on?

Doesn't matter what it "should" be based on. Only thing that matters is what it is
based on. Obviously there will be differences among employers.

I feel it's a combination of experience, education, and impression (overall and certainly
subjective). Age comes into play, too - in my opinion, they just will never admit it.

A candidate can have straight A's and lots of good experience. But if that person
creates a negative or otherwise unseemly impression, forget it. That's my opinion.

Also... all those business people who talked to you?

LOL - don't ever expect the truth from a crowd like that in a forum like that. But that's
just my opinion, too. But it's based on a lot.
