Interesting comment on American Idol

Sadly, the US version of Idol will probably never have a Paul Potts or a Susan Boyle. I've always wondered why Brits seem to find such talent while the US version is always a bunch of "good singers".

Last week during the first auditions one of the judges mentioned that there is an "age limit of 28" for contestants. No wonder they don't get unnoticed but seasoned talent. I think I like the Brit version better!

Could he have been kidding?

Nope. 28 is the limit. Makes me sad to realize I know that particular bit of trivia.

That seems stupid to me. No wonder the contestants seem so generic!

Don't get trying to make an Idol confused with talent.

Americans are so superficial that we won't have any Susan Boyles or Paul Potts,as,while they are extremely talented, they don't have the "look" the "buying" American public wants.

I think after 28 years old you have to audition for "American Idle".

Let's face it, if you're over 28 and feel the need to be on that show you probably don't have a job, anyway.

      exactly.

American Idol isnt looking for talent, as much as they are looking for marketability. They want someone that looks good on cd covers and in ads, and jean commercials. You'll notice that once THE contestants get picked, Idol will have them in commercials almost immediately.

If you have not singing talent, a studio can make up for that. But a studio can't fix ugly.

Kay, I don't know if you knew this but Simon Cowell is leaving Idol after this season cause they are going to launch a US version of X Factor and then there's no age limit Personally, I think if Simon leaves Idol, the show will not be the same...but we'll see.

I never watched Idol until two years ago - Simon will be hard to replace but they are adding ellen degeneres which will be good for a laugh.

I'm more likely to follow simon to the grown-up show They've had some really good young singers but there's not enough variety unless they come up with another Adam this season.

Yeah, Ellen will bring a great little spark to the show. I'll probably watch X Factor too, for the same reason as you. And when someone really interesting does end up on Idol they are voted off by the teenie-boppers.

Although the X-Factor allows older contestants, in the six years it's been running, only the first winner was over the age of 30. The others have all been 21 or under. Susan Boyle and Paul Potts came from Britain's Got Talent.

That's right, if you're going to make a comparison why not do it w/ the same show? America's got talent did have it's Susan Boyle moment. And he was over 30:

ps - in my opinion sounded better than Susan. And he won.

pss - Susan Boyle didn't win, she lost to a young dance group.

On idol, the logical choice often comes in second. That's interesting and I've wondered if that's because the "winner" is locked into a contract. It seems often it's the runner-up you hear of after the show's run is over.

I guess they should call it "Young American Idols" I would have loved to see interplay between Ellen D and Simon - that would have been great.

As for marketability, Boyle's first CD has sold over 8 million. I'd say that's a good market. What I enjoy most is seeing someone like Potts or Boyle who are a bit awkward and not "beautiful people" who stop you in your tracks when they begin to sing.

    Kay you're right.

I watched it and when Simon brings the other "X" show here it will be much
    different/better.

    Have a Great Day!
