The new Kirk called Shatner for some tips and Shatner told him basically to f*ck off, good luck.

My friend The Cool Ghoul had Shatner on his show and can testify that he's a 100% a*s.

As far as the movie goes...

    Best since Wrath Of Kahn.

And, the genius of the "time travel changing everything" concept leaves it wide open for a whole new series with differences already explained.

I actually enjoyed the latest Star Trek, though I didn't think I would. In
fact, it is one of my favorite Star Trek movies along with Wrath Of Khan.

Do I still love TOS? Of course. I grew up with it and as cheesy as some of
the effects were and as bad as Shatner's acting was, there was a
chemistry between Shatner, Nimoy and Kelly, that they never duplicated
again...not even in TNG and certainly not in VOY or DS9. ENT was pretty
good and I did enjoy the relationships between Archer, Tripp, Flox and
T'Pau, but they still didn't touch TOS.

Oh, in case you're wondering, I'm Star Trek freak since day 1.

Gene Roddenberry was a genius...RIP old man.

TOS? VOY? DS9? TNG? Flox? T'Pau? WTF?

Vulcan spelling was never my strong suit. Actually T'Pau was from TOS.

Hell, except for Spock, they all had funny names you couldn't remember.

That's because that was the mirror universe T'Pol, where Vulcans were more or less slaves to the Terran (human) Empire.

When they first canceled the original Star Trek I said to my best friend, George Cavender (The Cool Ghoul) "What are we going to do?" We wrote about 20 letters begging them to bring it back.

I, too, have been a huge fan since day 1.
    But, George, He's a dyed -in-the-wool trekkie.

He had the uniform he wears in this video taylor-made.

He always jokes about James T. Kirk being his dad. (his real father died when he was very young).

But, George's name is George T. Cavender.

So, James Kirk's father was George Tiberious.

    George T.

I could go on and on.
The bottom line is, George is the Trekkie's Trekkie.

However, I did like the throw-back series "Enterprise" with Scott Bakula very much.

The biggest problem they faced was coming up with cool, futuristic stuff that was better than what we have now but, not as cool as the stuff from the original series.

    Think about it...

The iphone is cooler than the original communicators.

And, remember the 3"x3" disks they used in the original series.
That was in the 60s. Long before the 31/2" floppy.

Well, it's not the physical size that counts. We STILL don't have a petabyte medium, let alone one that is 3"x3".(I have no idea how much data the media on star trek were supposed to hold, but apparently some could hold a LOT) When the first star trek came in, the storage medium of the day was 8". EVEN THEN though, we had FAR better storage media. They weren't used simply because methods to isolate the environment weren't reliable, so they weren't used for removable media. Look at TODAY, we have media that can EASILY get to close to 1TB in a 3.5" medium, but still don't have removable media. As for how it will end up? Frankly, I think the new micro SDHC is TOO SMALL! If people are smart, they may try to increase the density, but NOT decrease the form factor. It is also a security risk. The micro form factor is so small that the contacts may have hit their limit to be reliable, it is very small too handle, and the thickness is JUST thick enough.

And we had cordless phones that were fancier than cell phones when they came out. The communicator could supposedly transmit 100s of miles or more. TODAY, devices that go over 20 miles are pretty bulky by comparison. Cell phones don't count because the average cellphone today only goes about 2 miles. The reason you can talk to people FAR away is because the phone connects to a cell tower which then uses the normal phone service. To do that with a federation of planets, you would need to use satellites. Satellite phones are ALSO bulky, last I knew!

BTW I HATED "quantum leap". I considered it to be a pretty dumb show. I have to admit though, that I liked enterprise, EVEN with scott bacula!

But, the point is, that was 100s of years in the future.

when the original was done in the 60s the Cray was state of the art.

But people are still people. they have been for THOUSANDS of years, and one hopes that won't change in a few hundred. That means MANY things will be SIMILAR.

As for the Cray? Whether optical or electronic, shorter connections ARE better(The reason why crays are round)! That is likely to be true even a trillion years from now, if the world even survives.

And colder devices CAN work better.

GRANTED, they don't do it on the same scale today, because everything is so much smaller, and more efficient, but two key parts to the cray are as true today as when they where invented, and likely always will be. In fact, they are coming out with better ways to get chips cooler for less. Some such devices TODAY look like they could have been out of star trek!

As for other things, outside of size, number, arrangement, they may not be that different. Even FLASH memory is similar to, and originally used in the same areas as, eeproms! EEPROM - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

i thought rodenberry was married to the woman that plays the mother of counselor troy (and does the computer voice for the enterprise)

The iPhone is not cooler. It just has a bunch of toys to keep those with ADHD occupied.
The original communicator was for communicating, hence the name, and was able to
easily reach a ship in geosynchronous orbit. That's at least a 22,000 mile range without
any cell towers. Gotta love sub-space technology.
