History has a long line of dissent through music. Post some.
I can't say this is my number one in the genre, but it's close.

    Nice one.

Here's Bob Dylan "Masters Of War" I especially like the line "and I'll stand over your grave till I'm sure that you're dead." Yeah.

Ironic, and meaningful that John Kay of Steppenwolf was born in Germany, then moved to Canada, before singing the song about America.

Great songs in this thread so far.

Every line of Working Class Hero could be my autobiography.

Masters Of War is Dylan classic (and, no, not every Dylan song is a classic).

That song really resonated with me when I was young, and I used to play it a lot. I was in the Airforce at the time which I suppose is funny with hindsight. In those days you really did join the military as just "a career" with no thought to the nasty business they were really about.

Weird how I'm starting to get militant again in me old age. I'll be wearing Che Guevara tshirts again at this rate. Remember those?

I had forgotten Ohio.A classic. That's what getting old will do to you....makes you forgetful.
C&S&N or C&S&N&Y were one of the "supergroups" of the time.
Tho I ahve to say out of the 4 I think Young is the only one that maintained that star status without becoming a parody of himself like some of the others did.

I'd not heard that Ohio one before Thom, it's very good.

I'm trying to think of that one that goes '1, 2, 3, what are we fighting for, don't ask me I don't give a damn the next stop is Vietnam. 5, 6, 7, open up the Pearly Gates, ain't no time to wonder why, whoopee we're all gonna die"

In the meantime another Dylan one "Oxford Town". If I remember rightly this was about the lynchings that the film Mississippi Burning was based on?

This is a classic. I couldn't it on youtube or anyplace else but I found it and you can stream it from here: For those that never heard it before, Let me warn you it's almost 14 minutes long.
Another clue;it's very similar to the original version of Arlo Guthries Alices Restaraunt.

This one is appropriate. The Beatles taking a swipe at the taxman. Think our taxes for very high earners were something ludicrous at the time like 90% (not kidding!)

The way things are going I shudder to think what your taxes will soon be like after paying the bill for the bailout.

'K my last one before I hit the sack. John Lennon again, "Woman is the N****r of the World". Bit sad he has to explain it, but then I felt the need to put asterisks rather than spell it. That's conditioning for ya!

Sad to see him looking so perky and full of life. Incredible to think it's getting on for 30 years since he died.

A day that still stings when I think about it. Lennon's murder changed my life in ways that I was too young to understand what had really happened (I was 12 at the time). And now I am going to be as old as he was when he was brutally shot down.

Now that you mention it, his birthday is just around the corner. On October 9th, he would have been 68 years old. I often wonder what kind of world we would be living in if John had been around for the past 28 years.

I used to wear all black on Dec. 8th for many years, but realized he would not want darkness to be that big in our lives.

I was fortunate enough to see the Lennon exhibit on one of my three trips to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There were all kinds of items from his life. Report cards, school drawings, his bed form the Bed In for Peace, his Sgt. Pepper's uniform, and...

In the outer there was a tall column with little cubby holes in it. You would walk around, and could only see what was in each one if you got up real close and purposely peeked in. There, in one of the holes, was something I had to look at a bit at a time. I would gingerly step up, take a little peek, and had to back away; each time getting more courage and adding to my resolve. Finally, I took the full look at the broken, and still blood-stained eyeglasses John was wearing the night he was murdered. I walked over to my wife, hugged her, and wept like a baby. Even writing this now is difficult.

Anyway, just wanted to show that we remember. Now, back to your regular scheduled program.

Thanks for sharing these heartfelt words Michael. It's just so sad. We have lost so many artistic geniuses so young. It almost goes with the territory. In most cases though I feel like we all have so many watts and they just burn them out quicker being 'all that'. But, in John's case, it was just so obscene. I still remember the day clearly as well.

What? wearing black means you are dark? Go figure. I wear black everyday and am most happy in all black. It is the color of 'authority' - cops, judges, pastors, etc. In my case, think thin. lol.

That is partially correct. Country and the Fish did the studio version of Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag, and Country Joe and the Fish performed at Woodstock - However, Country Joe McDonald did a solo rendition of the song at the festival. So, you are not necessarily incorrect, but the live version is sans Fish.

I always thought Skynyrd was a bit political in a lot of their songs. At least in the sense that they songs about things that effected their (and their fan's) lives. For example Saturday Night Special takes a clear stance on gun control.

      "...Handguns are made for killin',
They ain't no good for nothin' else"

      and...

"So why don't we dump all the people [referring to handgun owners],
      To the bottom of the sea;
Before some old fool come around here,
And want to shoot either you or me"

Political? I think so. (Sorry if the lyrics are a bit off, they are from memory)

This may not help, but I noticed the YouTube title had the name of the band wrong. When Indian Reservation went to #1, they were billing themselves as the Raiders, so Mark Lindsay being there without Mr. Revere could be a possibility.

I was always under the impression that "Saturday Night Special" was written for the movie "The Longest Yard" and wasn't any kind of statement at all...at least on Skynyrds part...but it appears I was misguided and it just MAY have been based on Ronnie Van Zant's own personal feelings...

To find out I asked Ed King and he replied...

"The song was written weeks before we knew it would be in the movie. The song wasn't written about any particular experience that I'm aware of. I was the FIRST PERSON to ever hear the lyrics. While going over the song with the entire band (as Ronnie was writing it), Ronnie walked over and cupped my ear with his hand and ran down the entire first verse.
Leon and I were auditioning Artimus Pyle in Atlanta and were working up a three-piece version of SNS. Kooper stopped by and told us about the movie - we packed everything up, moved over to the studio and cut it...no vocals or other guitars. "

Very cool! I always thought it was shame that Strawberry Alarm Clock didn't get the credit they deserved, Mr. King included.

I'm not sure if the answer supports my view of the song or not, but I can't argue with first-hand experience. Either way, I still like the song.

Maybe later I'll scan a cover from an LP and let you all see what I'm taling about.Oh, another tell tale sign could be they are not wearing those cheesy costumes they wore in their hey dey. lol

Heheh now you know why I've taken to pasting articles instead of just linking. Most people just won't click, it's infuriating. One of the blessings of embedding vids is it encourages people to click the bloody thing!

In this case though, I get a 404.

I was on one (USS Mahan DDG-42) from '76-'80... seems that song would play in the background on the ships intercom system almost 24/7 the last couple years I was aboard when we were at sea.

    Can your spending kneel?
    Marching forward hypocritic
    And hypnotic computers
    You depend on our protection
Yet you feed us lies from the tablecloth
La la la la la la la la la la
Everybody is going to the party
    Have a real good time
    Dancing in the desert
    Blowing up the sunshine
    Kneeling roses
    Disappearing into Moses' dry mouth
    Breaking into Fort Knox
    Stealing our intentions
    Every city, gripped in oil
    Crying freedom!
    Handed to obsoletion
Still you feed us lies from the tablecloth
la la la la la la la la la la
Everybody is going to the party
    Have a real good time
    Dancing in the desert
    Blowing up the sunshine
Everybody is going to the party
    Have a real good time
    Dancing in the desert
    Blowing up the sunshine
    Blast off, it's party time
And we all live in a fascist nation
    Blast off, it's party time
And where the **** are you?
    Where the **** are you?
    Where the **** are you?

it's alright 'cos the historical pattern has shown
how the economical cycle tends to revolve
in a round of decades three stages stand out in a loop
a slump and war then peel back to square one and back for more

bigger slump and bigger wars and a smaller recovery
huger slump and greater wars and a shallower recovery

you see the recovery always comes 'round again
there's nothing to worry for things will look after themselves
it's alright recovery always comes 'round again
there's nothing to worry if things can only get better

there's only millions that lose their jobs and homes and sometimes accents
there's only millions that die in their bloody wars, it's alright

it's only their lives and the lives of their next of kin that they are losing
it's only their lives and the lives of their next of kin that they are losing

it's alright 'cos the historical pattern has shown

a slump and war then peel back to square one and back for more

bigger slump and bigger wars and a smaller recovery
huger slump and greater wars and a shallower recovery

don't worry be happy things will get better naturally
don't worry shut up sit down go with it and be happy

Here's one that caused a good deal of controversy by taking a pop at the British establishment of the time. (This is a studio version)

What's really funny, is that Johnny Rotten recently appeared on a reality show where he roughed it in the jungle. It was truly a surreal experience watching him being pecked by ostriches. What was even more surreal was the establishment was acting as if he'd betrayed them by selling out. All those middle aged journalists were so utterly bewildered that he would do this. (He got the hump after a week or so, and after an entertaining rant buggered off home.)

He turned out to be quite charismatic and witty. Who'da thunk?
