Deep thoughts: Smile, its Friday.

So I began my day today by talking to my lady and telling her how I was going to be late for work and then I rushed to get ready, jumped in the car and drove to the construction site, where I currently work as an Electrician. As I walked to pick up my tools and started hanging conduits for different circuits from the Electrical panel to different areas of the building, I noticed something very peculiar...

Every single person I laid my eyes on was smiling, and since I had my normal face expression, they looked at me and said "Smile, its Friday". Those three words seemed to have strucked me in a strange way:

People love Friday because they have 2 days off after the day is over, and then its 5 days of work again after the weekend, and when Monday comes, all they look forward to is the "Friday" so they can have 2 days off after... Its a very redundant circle of weeks, months and years and I ended up asking myself " Is there more to life than this? " Is there such thing as real excitement?

The days and weeks are soo dull that it seems like you're on a treadmill, running towards something but you just can't seem to get there because what you're stepping on keeps moving too, its a rat race... Its like putting a carrot in front of a donkey and have the donkey chasing it.

And so, the people that I work with began asking me what I'm doing for the weekend, and I said "Oh, I'm not too sure yet, but I know something will come up" and they replied with their plans of getting smashed (getting drunk) as they did the week before, and the week before that...

So is it just me, or does life seems like its just a routine, with no excitement at all? I mean, is there more to life than getting drunk? Getting laid (having sex), and getting stoned (getting high on drugs) ?

Or am I simply being pessemistic?

My sig, I think answers the question about how I feel about it (get a life) -- that is my passion and if you have passion for something, you have excitement within your grip at all times. The reason the people you see look to friday for a life is because they do not love what they do. I can't remember who said it - Franklin maybe? but it goes like this:

Love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life.

For me - that means going where the country is wild and the gems are plentiful and when I can't go there I write about going there, post about going there, decide whether to craft, display, or sell what I found going there, and make friends who know where the best hunts are and wanna go there too. Work? Sometimes - but not at that. That is LIFE.

This reminds me of a story I heard many years ago about setting goals and having a purposeful passion in life.

A passerby walked by a construction site as he had for several months and became curious as the very large edifice was beginning to take shape. He asked the first of the brick layers what he was doing, who answered, "I'm laying some f***g bricks, what do you think I'm doing?" He asked another brick layer, who mumbled "Makin' 20 bucks an hour." The curious passerby then asked a third brick layer high up the scaffolding the same question, who replied readily and animated, "Me? Why I am building the most magnificant cathedral you have ever seen!", and proceeded to give a full description.

It doesn't matter what kind of a job you have or whether or not you really enjoy it. Setting and achieving goals with a vision for what you want to accomplish is what brings joy to life. In this economy you should be grateful you have a job, a means to accomplish the goals you set. Whether it is to build a cathedral , buy a house, start a business, or simply to raise a family, live life to the fullest by having a dream.
