Ever seen Steve Vai play guitar?

Wow!

Heard the name before, think he played with Frank Zappa and David Lee Roth a while back, but I never really heard any of his stuff.

he played the devil's guitar player in the 80's movie "Crossroads".

The movie was cheesy but the "jam session" with Steve Vai and the kid was cool.

Ry Cooder was the music behind the kid's playing. I think Ry also did the whole soundtrack. Other than Steve's part.

That song in the Duel is "Bad Horsie" by Steve Vai.. Also Check out his song Lotus Feet...

Perhaps Johnny would have played Ry Cooder under
the table in the climactic duel scene. Winter's blues
is mean as hell, in a good way. I don't recall Cooder's
playing as nearly so intense.

Great. Haven't thought about those guys in a while.

What do you think about Michael Schenker?

I'll hear him do a kick ass solo but then there is something that I can't put my finger on that keeps him out of that group above.

Maybe he is a little sterile and missing some emotion. It's all technique with him. (shrugs)

  No I didn't think so Kurt. I agree with you about Johnny being a better fit.

Vai's Passion & Warfare is arguably the greatest instrumental rock guitar album ever recorded, IMO.

  A little embarrassed to say I haven't heard that whole album yet.
  
  So you would say that it beats out anything by Jeff Beck? Well, I know that Beck is more Fusion but still what do you think as far as comparison?

  I was a big fan of Vai's from when he was with David Lee Roth.
  
  When Passion and Warfare came out I immediately went out and bought the cassette tape ( yes cassette ).
  
  I listened to that tape so many times it eventually busted .

I think we all can agree the movie would have been much better if it had been written, directed, and the casting done by blues players.

Now that would have been a movie.

The kid, played by Stevie Ray Vaughn runs into a prophet, (Eric Clapton) who appears in a field and teaches the young man a few licks to get him through the tough times ahead.

Wasn't Clapton the prophet in the Who's Tommy? maybe that's where I picked up that idea.
