This song, which I didn't hear until today, was a big hit in the UK and other
places.

Hardly made a dent in the US charts.

What is wrong with this country?

Do you actually like that song? I can see why it wasn't a hit: it sucks. :-)

Yes, I like that song, as did a whole bunch of people in the UK.

Maybe their taste in music sucks too.

I agree with Tim and Sarge, the song sucks.

I mean they preformed it well. but that structure or melody has been around so long I could play the drums in it in my sleep. Just a rehashed commercial melody, nothing original, nothing new.

Well, not everything has to be original and new to be nice to listen to.

But hey, that's the wonderful thing about music. One guy can listen to a
Grammy Award winning tune and get all worked up over it and another guy
can listen to it and fall asleep...or worse.

It's called taste...and taste is neither right or wrong.

            It just is.

You know Tim, you remind me of my best friend Paul.

I'd play a song for him and tell him how great it is and he'd look at me,
make a face and say, "You like that? How can you like that?"

If he didn't pull me out of a lake and save my life 36 years ago, I'd
probably crack him over the head with a coconut.

Not sure where it landed on the charts, but I've heard it on the radio and I even bought it for my ipod. I think the song rocks, but from a US point of view, it would have been better marketed in the early-mid 90s. Nowadays the US charts are littered with crap, er, rap.

This was actually one of those "played into oblivion" songs that had airplay two or three times an hour for a couple weeks, on the radio station my wife liked.

But it's got a piano, and a wussy-sounding singer, and I don't hear any distorted guitars or guitar solos... let alone harmonised ones with six-string arpeggios... plus nobody says the F word even once. How could anyone expect this song to chart in the US?

This song always reminded me of...

Either was I (born in 1957)

But I get what you're saying.

Oh what the hell. My taste in music was always different from most of my
friends. If I liked something, dollars to donuts they hated it.

Oddly, most of the stuff I liked from the 70s on, didn't chart well. I hated
the mainstream stuff and yet, the stuff I liked, my friends, who didn't like
mainstream stuff either, didn't like. They liked different non mainstream
      stuff.

It was a weird period in my life.

Fortunately for me these days, my daughter and I love the same music
      almost to the song.

Actually, it's a little scary when you think about it.

        Parse error.

Intent when I said it: Most of us [weren't born] in the 1960s.

Analysis when you heard it: Most of us weren't [born in the 1960s].

Called out because if you're anything like me (and I think you are), you find those things interesting.

Oh what the hell. My taste in music was always different from most of my friends. If I liked something, dollars to donuts they hated it.
I was always weird because I liked everything from Metallica to Ice Cube to Barry Manilow to John Denver. If my friends liked something, chances were I liked it too. But I liked a lot of stuff they couldn't stand...

Lately, I've been really enamoured with big band swing for some reason.

My kids used to run when I would put on Buffet or Little Feat.
Now all of them have been to Little Feat and Allman Bros. concerts with me.
My wife smashed the first copy of the first Rusted Root cd I brought home.
        Tastes do change.

Just so you know Steve, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have to dig to deep to find a song I really like that you would say sucks

      YouTube- Broadcast Yourself.
Getting to the rest of your post, yes, the song has a very formulaic sound
and it's been done...probably to death.

But I like the melody and the production so for me, it works.

And while I know you were maybe being a little sarcastic with your
comments about what it doesn't have, there is a lot of truth to it. Most
of today's music is pretty much what you described...not that there is
anything wrong with it. I can appreciate almost anything if it's done well.

As for Let Em In, when that song first came out, and I was a big
McCartney fan, I hated it. Still do. I think it's one of the stupidest songs
      ever recorded.

But one thing I'll never do is make somebody feel like their taste in music
is stupid IF they tell me they like it. So I'll respond to their question (if
I like it or not) with something like...

"It's not my cup of tea. I'm a big McCartney fan but this song just doesn't
      do it for me."

That way I'm not making the other person feel like he's an idiot for liking
      the song.

Musical taste is all subjective. Anybody who flat out says that a
particular musical genre is crap and states it as fact, is being very narrow
      minded in my opinion.

It's one thing to say, "I don't like it."

It's another thing to say, "It's crap."

At least that's the way I look at it.

          Steve -

Really liked the lyrics but thought the arrangement was "same old". Didn't care for his voice, either.

Think the song might be good with a blues twist on it - but I could be wrong. Might look for that tune next time I'm searching through music sites as I'd like to play around with it.

Karen, not a problem. I don't mind. I'm glad people are getting something
              out of this.

For what it's worth, the only reason I even brought this up is it seems
that I am always finding music that never made it big in the US, music that
I really like...most of it from the UK.

Makes me wonder if, at least musically anyway, I'm living in the wrong
              part of the world.

I wonder how much other great stuff from across the ocean I've never
              heard?

That song I posted was 2004 and I first heard it on WRXP the other day.

For what it's worth, the only reason I even brought this up is it seems
that I am always finding music that never made it big in the US, music that
I really like...most of it from the UK.

Makes me wonder if, at least musically anyway, I'm living in the wrong
                part of the world.

I wonder how much other great stuff from across the ocean I've never
                heard?

That song I posted was 2004 and I first heard it on WRXP the other day.

sometimes I think I'm living in the wrong part of the world too!
Have you ever heard of Roy Harper, Steven?
I had forgotten how much I love his stuff until I found some videos on YouTube today...I think he's brilliant...
here he is doing one of his tunes with Jimmy Page

and here's one of my fave tunes of his

Ha Karen, I was thinking the same thing. I don't know why, but she reminds me of Gretchen wilson.

It has a Neil Young kinda quality to it.
Good beat, easy to dance to, I give it an 85.

yes, He became good friends with Jimmy Page. Roy has played with quite a few bands, including Pink Floyd, he's the one singing on "Have a Cigar"

he's what you would call a musician's musician...very underappreciated if you ask me

He is one of those that I heard a lot about but never heard much by him back in the day. Good stuff.

      Steve -

If you get bored why not trip across the pond and spend a month listening to music over there . Could be fun.
