Please Rob Me....

There is a website out there that posts tweets from twitter users. Now that in itself is not unusual....but this website posts are directed at those who post on twitter that they are not at home...

We've all seen them...the tweets like: "I just got to the mall" or I'm at Tony's Pizza having a calzone" or "just touched own in New Orleans, will be here all week". This website posts these tweets for all to see...including those looking to rob you.

They say at the bottom of the site that "Our intention is not, and never has been, to have people burglarized"....

What other purpose is there that this information can be used?

Just be carfefull out the folks.....what you say online...as innocent as it may seem, can come back to haunt you...

Here's a video from MSNBC on it...

  • That's what they're saying.

Most people think when they tweet, they're tweeting their followers.

    Nope. You're tweeting everyone.

It's not a private conversation. It's on the public timeline. You can make your tweets private, and if you're going to say stuff like this, you should.

Because anyone, anywhere, can write something like this to search through the timeline and find your stuff. And these people are not thinking "I want to rob THAT PERSON," they're thinking "I want to rob SOMEONE."

Most people don't understand just how different those two things are.

    • I agree those two things are different, but I have been told by law enforcement folks that something like 80% of home break-ins are done by people who know the home occupants.

  • a lot of people have got twitter apps on their smart phone and its tweeting and they may not know it. everytime they walk by a starbucks, mcdonalds, library, any place with a free open wifi connection, the app tweets 'im at the mcdonalds on 24th and 3rd' (or wherever' 'and i've been here for xxxx' amount of time.
  • I am very wary of what I post online. I shudder at some of the personal family pictures that people post without much thought.
