Who can out drink the Irish?

Some guy and I was talking about drinking, and when I commented on who can beat an Irishman drinking, he said the British can drink them under the table all day long, he was from the U.K.

Then, years later, got into another conversation about the same thing, but the guy said when he was in the military drinking with Irish and Brits, he never could stay conscious enough to see who survived and won the battle.

But the interesting comment he made is that the Japanese can out drink everyone.

Maybe its the strong saki, like shots, their accustomed to it or maybe its biochemical to them.

Does ANYONE really have the edge or Heavyweight Championship of Drinking and out surviving their drinking peers, or is it just folklore among the consumers of firewater?

What say you?

      My mistake.

Any culture whose slang word for beer is "coffee" tells you how "mild" they think of it.

Or any culture that use's as a greeting "cheers" gives a peep into one of their mainstays or hobbies.

HAHA you beat me too it!

Alcohol is such a problem for the Swedes they have to grade the beer and limit the amount of hours liquor stores are open especially in the winters.

I once went to dinner with some major player in the Swedish music industry, he told me when he was 18 or 19 (he is about 50 now) he went on a working holiday to Australia - in all his years he has never seen a Nation that drinks as much as the Australians and this is coming from a Swede!

    Japanese - Remember this name?

    Kevin Riley.

I realize he's not a born, bred, Japanese, but he's lived there long enough to be saturated into the environment...or should I say well saturated by it?

Reminds me of a brilliant episode of Family guy where Peter goes to Ireland to find his dad.

Anyway.. I don't really think it matters where your from.. I'm living in (Northern) Ireland at the moment and I'm surprised by how fast people over here get drunk on baby drinks such as Carlsberg, Guinness etc..

Give them a few proper drinks and they are under the table after a few drinks..

And if we really have to start generalizing.. I don't think it are the Japanese, have been drinking with quite a few Asians and most of them were already drunk after touching a drink.

      By the way, I'm Dutch

Is that the orgin of Polish jokes, they seem too dumb to get anything right when the fact of the matter is they are too plastered?

I'm Cossack stock myself - my family came over during the Bolshevik so I don't know those still there, but I can tell you.......the ones that came over here were sure pretty good at tucking it away when they had the mind to.

      Yep.

This thread may just set the ACLU or some other nonsense group on us.
This is about as politically incorrect as I've seen in WF.

One of the great things about you guys.

They'd have to call the Olympics very non-PC too. After all, certain countries have become well established in producing talent in varied sectors of the sports world. So, we'll just consider drinking one of the world class sports and they can't say much about it. If they are jealous because the US isn't getting enough honorable mention....if you want to go occupational - our geologists are getting quite a rep for being professional beer sluggers.

The Japanese are serious beer drinkers. Sake popularity has been below 18% for years.

So now the question becomes...,should beer drinkers be put in the same category as hard liquor drinkers?

Who are the BEST HARD liquor drinkers should be the question then.

Hard Liquor drinkers = Grade 1 drinkers

Beer drinkers = Grade 2 drinkers

A few years ago I witnessed a drinking race.

2 hardened bar manages in Newcastle on Tyne, North East, UK sat at the bar and were already 'well oiled' on Newcastle Brown Ale (pewk). They proceeded to have a whisky (note the difference) drinking race.

Each one had a pint of Bells Whisky and started to race . . . the outcome wasn't very pleasant at all - ambulances were called and they were rushed into hospital with chronic alcohol poisoning . . .

The Geordies (ie those who are born and bred in the North East of England) can really shift some! My own grandfather was a '16 bottle of Brown Ale a night man!'

The thing about us Irish is the pace we drink beer at. I have traveled a great deal the last few yrs and I sincerely think that we drink beer at a faster pace than most other nations. I remember been at an after dinner function in Denmark 2 yrs ago when a group of business men. In Denmark they serve the beer in smaller measures that a pint. I was consuming approx. 6 of these glasses per hr . This was only about 4 pints per hr ( which is about norm for us over here on a easy night out ). Anyways, these Danish people were looking at me as if I had 2 heads on me.

As the saying goes ' Whiskey was invented to stop the Irish taking over the world' lol
