I really like 'I feel for You' by Chaka Khan... I think it's one of those timeless 80's classics that just brings a smile to my face every time! it's a 'sunny day' song

My "best" song ever and my "favorite" song ever are two totally different things.

IMO, the "best" song ever written was Amazing Grace. The meaning, feeling, sound and lyrics are the most powerful ever...And it's stood the test of time.

But I don't play it that often, so I can't really call it my favorite.

This is my current theme song.

Lead vocalist and guitarist, Gabriel Garcia, was 14 years old at the time of this recording. Met him in Seattle just after his 15th birthday, the show was DEVASTATINGLY good. He's my idol.

      My favorite song ever?

      What drugs are you on?

A world filled with music spanning hundreds of years, and you want me to
pick, from that collection, ONE SONG?

Good heavens...talk about an impossible task.

Jim Webb wrote one of the greatest pieces of music ever in "MacArthur
      Park."

Don McLean wrote the classic "American Pie" that captured the hearts of
      a generation.

And then there was a little known group called Renaissance with a singer
who had one of the most captivating voices ever. Pick any one of her
songs, "Ocean Gypsy", "Can You Understand" and then Dvorjak's "Going
Home" that this woman sang like nobody else.

The Raspberries, known for their hit "Go All The Way" created one of
the great rock ballads of all time in "Don't Want To Say Goodbye", a song
      that got almost no airplay.

A more recent group, "Within Temptation" did a song called "All I Need"
that could just blow you away.

And then there are the songs that, while not great pieces of music, just
make you smile from ear to ear...like The Move's "Tonight".

Speaking of great music, and getting away from rock and roll, what about
the music from "West Side Story?"

      What about these Broadway shows?

      Sound Of Music
      Showboat
      Carousel
      My Fair Lady

      And countless others.

"I Could Have Danced All Night", "Old Man River", "Can't Help Lovin Dat Man"
      and so many others.

And you want us to pick one favorite song?

I'd rather tackle something easy like solving pi...thank you.

And then of course, there are all the great songs that Jim Steinman wrote
        for Meat Loaf.

It wasn't a hit, but "Heaven Can Wait" was probably the best song from
"Bat Out Of Hell" and certainly a candidate for favorite song.

"For Crying Out Loud", also from that album was another great one.

And what about all the great songs that Lennon and McCartney wrote?

        "Penny Lane"
        "Eleanor Rigby"
        "Hey Jude"
        "All You Need Is Love"
        "Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End"
        "The Long And Winding Road"
        "Something"

Even hard rock groups like The Who, had some great songs.

        "The Song Is Over"
        "Baba O' Riley"

        And many others.

What about the great Harry Chapin tunes, God rest his soul?

        "Taxi"
        "What Made America Famous?"
        "A Better Place To Be"

Even "You Light Up My Life" by Debbie Boone, has to get a mention. I
cried every time I heard that song as a kid.

At the same time, a guy by the name of Andrew Gold had a great song
        called "Lonely Boy".

The Strawbs had two fantastic songs from "Bursting At The Seams"

        "Lay Down"
        "The Winter And The Summer"

The Electric Light Orchestra, a group that came from "The Move" had
        these great songs.

"Can't Get It Out Of My Head"
        "Queen Of The Hours"
        "Midnight Blue"

and a song that somebody said Paul McCartney wishes he had written...

        "Wild West Hero"

        Wanna go Christmas?

        "O Holy Night"
        "Happy Xmas"

        Speaking of John Lennon.

        "Imagine"
        "Jealous Guy"

        George Harrison

        "All Things Must Pass"
        "Isn't It A Pity"
        "Awaiting On You All"

        Paul McCartney

        "Pipes Of Peace"
        "Uncle Albert"
        "Back Seat Of My Car"

        Ringo Starr

        "Photograph"
        "It Don't Come Easy"

        Let's go Beatles clone bands

        Badfinger

        "Gotta Get Out Of Here"
        "Meanwhile Back At The Ranch"
        "Apple Of My Eye"
        "I Can Love You"

David Bowie had a couple of songs that I loved.

          "Starman"
          "Space Oddity"
"The Man Who Sold The World"

And then there's Mott The Hoople

          "All The Young Dudes"
          "Through The Looking Glass"

and Ian Hunter's "Boy" and "It Ain't Easy When You Fall/Shades Off"

What about all the ELP tunes?

          "Lucky Man"
          "Karn Evil 9"
          "The Sheriff"

          Or Pink Floyd's great tunes

          "On The Turning Away"
          "Brain Damage/Eclipse"

          What about Kansas?

          "Song For America"
          "The Wall"
          "Miracles Out Of Nowhere"

      I love Joy Division!

I didn't participate originally because I can't pick just ONE all-time favorite song either. I am, however, currently addicted to this:

I know it looks like a death metal album (nothing wrong with that ), but it's more of an ambient/neoclassical... it's also another reason why I really, really want to learn cello.

Top artists are Leaether Strip, Mechanical Moth, In Slaughter Natives, Sopor Aeternus, Nox Arcana... Of course, there are many others (including Sisters of Mercy and Einsteurzende Neubauten since seventh grade) but listing them would take way too much time.

      Best albums:

Leaether Strip - Underneath the Laughter. I think his 90's stuff is best, though he did make some great remixes in the last decade.

Mechanical Moth - Torment. I think it's their most mature-sounding album. The first one is good but underdeveloped IMO, and while the other two have a few gems, they took off in a more clubbish-feel and aren't as original anymore

In Slaughter Natives - Return of a King. Most recent and actually most mature-sounding album yet.

Sopor Aeternus - Es Reiten Die Toten So Schnell. There are so many great songs on so many albums, but if I had to choose just one, this is her best.

Nox Arcana - ... tie between Necronomicon, Transylvania and Shadow of the Raven. It's REALLY tough to compare Nox Arcana albums, because they produce their work in themes - Dracula, Edgar Allan Poe, etc., so I chalk this one up to whatever mood I'm in.

What I usually end up doing is I get addicted to a few particular songs from a few artists I like, put them on repeat for a day or two, then switch to another addiction. No matter what I'm in the mood for, though, pretty much any song from the above five is suitable, and of course there's THIS:

This is my weird/trippy song... it might not have such a great effect when you're wide awake, but if you're lying on your bed in the dark, half-asleep, and have had just one too many glasses of wine...

      "Goodbye To Love"
      "We've Only Just Begun"
      "For All We Know"

And then there's the great Barry Manilow tunes

      "I Write The Songs"
      "Could It Be Magic"
"Trying To Get The Feeling Again"

Of course how can you forget some great 60s tunes like...

"To Sir With Love" - Lulu
"Young Girl" - Gary Puckett & the Union Gap
      "Daydream Believer" - The Monkees

"Mrs Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter" - Herman's Hermits
"Blowin In The Wind" - Bob Dylan

      "All Good People"
      "And You And I"
      "Roundabout"
      "Wondrous Stories"

Not to mention some great Turtles songs

Why does a person have to have one song that they love more than

Before Pink Floyd became a household name, I was listening to albums like
Atom Heart Mother and Meddle...not that any radio stations around here
were playing them, but I had a friend who turned me onto them.

Then in 1973, I was listening to an FM station that at least played some
decent music and I heard this song come on.

And Pink Floyd had finally reached the masses.

To this day...still one of the greatest songs.

And Pink Floyd had finally reached the masses.

To this day...still one of the greatest songs.
When I was in 8th grade I went to a Pink Floyd concert in an old auditorium in Denver than held about 8000 people, and it was about half full. It was right after Dark Side of the Moon came out and just before they got really big.

They played both Meddle and then Dark Side of the Moon from cover to cover. They had a round (or oval??) movie screen behind the stage and it was synced with the music. Kind of like a video with live music.

After that, you were lucky if they played any where that seated less than 70,000.

This was my favorite song at the time:

I'd be more than happy to take it off your hands!
I have 2 copies already, the regular vinyl and the expensive ,for the time, Half speed master that was suppose to be superior sounding to regular vinyl.

You and me both! Especially Piano Man.

To give you an idea of how much I love this song...I, both of my daughters and my five year old grandaughter all know the words by heart and at family gatherings, we all sing it together...3 generations!

Now that's a dang good song!

I think Year Of The Cat was Al Stewart, unless Cat Stevens did a live
version that I'm not aware of, because it's on none of his albums.

Anybody hear a Cat Stevens version of this song?

          Steven,
You are correct, that song was by Al Stewart, not Cat Stevens (or Yusef something or another).
          But, you knew that.

OK - I'll play properly this time. (Hi Emily.)

Like most people, it's impossible for me to choose one song as my favourite, because I like so many from different musical genres and different eras of my life. Heck, I love most of the songs here. So, I'll just choose some off the top of my head that are in my top 20 or something.

          Free
          "All Right Now"

When I first heard this riff, I knew Rock'N'Roll music was for me. Excellent song. This reminds me of being younger and carefree, which is always a good thing.

          Coldplay
          "Green Eyes"

Reminds me of the first person I fell in love with. (She had the most beautiful, glimmering green eyes.) An important, and wonderful time in my life. This song captures it perfectly.

          Iggy Pop
          "Lust For Life"

Chosen for me during something similar - just worse - to a Reality TV Show as my "signature song." (My real name's Jonathan, and, yes, I did a striptease.)

Anyone else have some favourites songs that remind them of something good? Or just songs that are your favourites?

By the way, last week I had to stop what I was doing and thought
"Hey, that's Stephen from The Warrior Forum."
Three times (yes, three) I heard what must have been one of his influences on the radio. Kind of strange I've never heard of them until then. And, it sounded just like him. I thought it was a good sign - would be brilliant to hear one of his songs on the radio.

Not sure what the song would be but it would probably be written by The Beatles.
