Okay, I should specify, the weapon used was a shotgun and the "117 times" was the number of pellets that hit him but, hey, it sounds even better saying he was shot that many times...

The thief then had the brazen cheek to contact a national newspaper saying people should feel sorry for him because now he 'can't even hug his wife'!

From the local newspaper...

Householder opens fire on car thieves

LOCALS have rushed to defend the actions of an Annagh man who fired two shots at a fleeing car from his house on Sunday morning, as the vehicle was being stolen from the property.

One of the thieves was believed wounded during the incident, as blood was found at the scene. A man admitted himself to Waterford Regional Hospital with pellet wounds on Sunday night, and Gardaí are trying to trace him.

TD Michael D'Arcy who lives nearby, said the man was entitled to protect his property. 'Criminals know the risks they take, and take those risks in full knowledge of the consequences,' he said. 'I support him protecting his property.'

The dramatic chain of events began with a break in at O'Rourke's Newsagents in Carnew in the early hours of Sunday morning. A quantity of cigarettes and cash were taken.

At 5.10 a.m., a resident at the house six miles away in Annagh, discovered that the 2007 BMW, which belonged to a relative, was being taken from the yard at the house. He got his shotgun and fired two shots at the fleeing car, hitting it in the side and in the rear. A second vehicle also fled the scene. The Gardaí were notified.

Then at 6.15 a.m., the stolen BMW was stopped by Gardaí on the Carnew Road outside Gorey, and a man was arrested. Items believed to have been stolen from the Carnew break-in were recovered, and the man, said to be from Carlow, was brought to Gorey Garda Station, where he was questioned and charged with the burglary in Carnew. He was later released, and is due before Arklow District Court on February 17 next.

Meanwhile, blood was found at the scene at Annagh when Gardaí called to the farm. A spokesman said they are 'keeping an open mind'.
"

From the follow-up article a week later...

"A THIEF who suffered shotgun blast injuries while trying to steal a car from a North Wexford farmer has said that people should feel sorry for him because of how he is suffering.

The man, who is from Carlow, was hit by 100 pellets in the arm and a further 17 in the chest when the John Fleming opened fire after hearing his father's BMW being driven out of his yard in the early hours of Sunday morning last week..."

"Gardaí tracked him down after he later admitted himself to Waterford Regional Hospital to have his injuries treated. However, the brazen thief later sent photos of his arm and chest to a national newspaper, and said people should feel sorry for him on account of what happened.

'I never deserved to get shot. I'm so stressed. I can't even hug my wife,' he said..."

"...As reported last week, locals in north Wexford are supporting the actions of John Fleming, who fired two shots at the BMW car which was being stolen from his house at Annagh the weekend before last. He had initially challenged the raider to get out of the car, but the driver backed up and then took off. Mr. Fleming also said he greatly feared for the safety of his elderly parents, Paddy and Maura, who live at the house...."

117 pellets is like 11-12 round of 12 gauge right?

Sounds likes he was using #7.5 shot to get that many pellets from two shots.

      That's bird shot, btw...

Good thing it wasn't the US. Poor householder would probably be in jail and the thief would be winning punitive damages in a lawsuit.

What was so bad? That the criminal tried to get sympathy? What is so unusual about that?

BTW I once ran out of gas on the freeway, pulled to the side, and parked. SURPRISINGLY, a police officer came by to drive me down to get gas! While in his car, I noticed a big gun in the center and asked him why he had it. He said it was in case he had to go into an apartment because the pellets didn't penetrate the walls that well, so it limited collateral damage. I'm sure you guessed, the gun was a SHOTgun! Don't worry though folks. It looked like the gun was locked in a holder in the car, so at least IT wasn't likely to be stolen.

          Thomas,

This kind of stuff happens in the US also. SOMETIMES, with a shotgun. Shotguns are often not even covered by a lot of laws, because they are LARGE, and often single shot. Shot here meaning one explosive charge set off. With MOST guns it is one to one, but obviously not with shot guns.

I take it you never look at the news.

The homeowner CAN get thrown in jail for battery, etc... And the thief CAN get paid!

INCREDIBLE, but TRUE! That is PC gone bad and just an example of how STUPID the laws are. HECK, a felon even TOUCHING a gun is a FELONY, but when is the last time you heard that come up in a court case? I mean if a felon has a gun, and goes into a bank, he will be tried for a bank robbery. If he gets off, he gets off EVEN though he committed a FELONY. I would say more, but....

Awe, poor guy - should have killed him instead.

We are told in the US we have private property - but what's private about property that any dickhead can come and deface or steal? Putting buckshot in those that do so would sure help people understand the concept of mine/yours and right/wrong.

When I lived in Colorado they instituted a "make my day" law which protected property owners from conviction for defending their property and themselves. I wonder if it's still on the books.
One of the reasons I love Idaho though - is when I moved there I went to the cop shop to ask about laws about dog bites because my landlord, come to find out had drug addicts running all over the place. I was told that officially I could get a lawsuit placed against me if my dog bit someone breaking into my home - but that it would be a cold day in hell before that criminal would win a case in Idaho. I love this state. We are soooo bitchy.

I forget how the subject came up, but a police officer once said that, if a thief were killed, that they should be dragged unto the killers property.

And Lawyers make it clear that you should SHOOT TO KILL!

In Liar Liar, there is a line where the protagonist;s secretary is leaving from disgust. The protagonist, a LAWYER, MUST tell the truth. The secretary says "Tell me this, my friend go SUED by a thief that fell through a skylight while trying to steal from her. He got $3,000 dollars! Now do YOU think that's FAIR!?!?!?" The protagonist says "NOOOOOO! er uh I'd have gotten him TEN!"!

But which should you shoot - the perp or the lawyer? That's the question!

If the thief had been on a gold mine claim he would have been shot with something that would have leveled his butt for good......and the shooter would not have been bothered by lawyers or judges.

A few years ago, there was a guy in st. pete that had his house robbed multiple times so he bought a gun. The robbers were hitting him again, coming through the front window but he was waiting on them. when the first robber stuck his leg through the window the guy shot him in the leg, his partner ran off but he was wounded on the porch when the cops showed up.

The robber successfully sued the homeowner for battery, and the guy was charged with firing a weapon inside city limits...etc. The reason? Because back at that time, if you were going to use a firearm to defend yourself, you had to retreat atleast 3 times, while staying 'stop'..even in your own house

Now we have 'stand your ground' laws. You dont have to retreat and the only thing you need to say is 'bye bye'..and thats only if you're nice.
