Best AC/DC Lead Singer - Bon Scott Or Brian Johnson?

AC/DC has one odd history if you really look at it.

They've been a band for 36 years (hard to believe)

Bon Scott was a member of that band for all of 6 of those years. Since
then, it's been Brian Johnson who has done the lead vocals.

And yet...some would say that in those 6 years Bon Scott defined what
the band was and Brian Johnson was just a 2nd rate substitute.

What do you think?

Please answer the poll. I'm curious to know what others think.

To help you decide, here's a song by each.

"Highway To Hell" with Bon Scott

"Hells Bells" with Brian Johnson

    Steve,

That's like asking me which one of my daughters I love the most...

I was in a public restroom the other day and some nosey dude asked me why I have an AC tattoo. I told him it's actually an AC/DC tattoo, it's just a little cold in the room...:p

What were you doing showing your "tattoo" to dudes in a public restroom?

A bit of offline marketing perhaps?

Back to the subject. Back in 1980 I was still living in Perth (Bon's home town as well), when the news broke that he'd passed away. Every rock format radio station in Perth played 24 hours of AC/DC's music.

His grave at Karrakatta Cemetery is one of Perth's most popular tourist spots. Every day people from all over the world pay tribute to him.

As for Bon v Brian, for me it's Bon. Not for the "local boy" reasons I mentioned, but for the last three albums he did with them.

Starting with "Let There Be Rock", which took them from being an Aussie pub-rock band to being a world class hard rock outfit, through "Powerage" and "Highway To Hell", it just never got better. It did however get a whole lot bigger.

Here's what is still my favourite Acca Dacca tune. Try NOT to play air guitar along with this, I defy you.

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

      *COUGH*

Um, maybe it's a regional thing, but where I come from AC/DC means something... and if you tattoo it THERE, chances are you're HOPING "some nosey dude" will see it.

AC/DC's long term success is because they have never forgot who they are and what style of music they play.

    Bon Scott 4 ever

Bon Scott - not sure if it's true but i believe acdc have not played this song in concert since his death as respect to Bon as they left it as his song?

    2 different vocal styles...

But, I would agree that if not for Bon, AC/DC probably never gets out of the Pub Band status (possibly - impossible to know for sure).

First AC/DC song I ever heard was Touch Too Much - my best friend at the time turned me on to them. He was learning that song on his guitar and wanted to show me.

    I was hooked immediately.

Use the same question for Van Halen...
    Who was the better singer?
    David Lee Roth...or...Sammy Hagar?
Strong arguements for both. Roth the better showman, but Sammy the better artist?
    Both pumped out hits...
What has David Lee Roth done since his Van Halen days?
Sammy was successful before, during & after Van Halen....

David Lee Roth is THE template for a rock front man. Back in they Diver Down days..he is what every front man should aspire to be, good looking, in good shape, always in some kind of headline grabbing drama that usually had something to do with women and booze. He is the embodiment of sex drugs and rock and roll.

That being said, Sammy is his own man. Where roth needed vh, vh needed sammy. Sammy is and always will be a big draw and was on par with vh in his hey day.

I would go for Bon, but Black in Black is probably the greatest Rock album of all time.

As for Van Halen - Sammy rocked and Roth has absolutely no talent.

This version of Dave was a (sad) gimmick that didn't work. Cummon.. any "real" bluegrass band member knows that ya caint' play good bluegrass if ya wearin a button shirt with a coller.

Given enough time (and the desire) I could probably find anybody sounding crappy on youtube.

        Hey Kim,

I agree that you probably could, with a few exceptions. The thing is it didn't take me that long nor that much desire to find the video.

I guess what I wanted to say is I don't see Dave as a musician, where I think Sammy is. I lot of people like to refer to Dave as a great showman or front man. I am not sure what they mean. I saw him in concert and he did get the a lot of audience reaction by swearing a lot and playing with his microphone as if it was his dick. I am not sure if these are the qualities of a great showman. However, Dave can be a very funny.

        Cheers mate,

        Nick

still can not hear a thing, a sea of red flashing horns protruding from heads rocking, tops being lifted to a whole lot of Rosie as she tapped her foot atop the large steam train that they call rock and roll.

will there ever be another rock band that will capture entire generations of people then also the next generation below that ?

there were oldies boppin along with the new kids on the block, which led me to think who is the Angus young of the I'm world ? as i watched him do his solo.

purchased a money clip inscribed, money talks, so for i suppose its back to work.

I have noticed that you can tell when you're at a concert for a band that was big in the 70's or 80's.

Instead of smelling weed in the crowd during the concert, you smell ben gay

I'll take the poll when you add a third choice.. "They both sound the same to me".

Seems like when Bon died, they wanted to keep the lead sound the same, so they set out to find a new lead singer that sounded like Bon. They did a great job.

It's prolly me, but when I listen to this band from both eras I can't tell a difference.

Ok, first off, David Lee Roth should be tied to a log and pushed into the ocean. *shivers*

I agree with most of the above that Bon Scott was probably one of the most important pieces in making them successful, and I saw on a documentary years ago they hired Brian Johnson because he sounded almost exactly like Bon Scott. So in a sense, even after passing he still influenced the band.

But...I do like Brian Johnsons' voice a little bit better. It's not as "clean". It has that raspy, throaty, grimy quality along with the high pitch squeel. It's siiiiiick.

Either way, I don't care what anyone says, AC/DC is the epitome of rock.

I like Brian Johnson's voice because of the raspiness in it.
