Finished My First Music CD In 5 Years

In 2003, I wrote my last batch of songs for a CD I did called "A Little Church
Music Vol II".

That same year, I started Internet marketing and haven't been in the
recording studio since.

Until last month.

I just finished my first CD in 5 years called "5 Years After"

The list of songs and running times...for anybody who cares.

1. Decisions (3:24)
2. Wild Of The World (2:26)
3. The Last Of The Great Divide (3:16)
4. Dirty Deed (3:51)
5. My Blues (2:30)
6. Roll Away (3:24)
7. Why Don't You Love Me? (3:23)
8. Stand Back And Let It Fly (2:37)
9. Wink Of An Eye (3:04)
10. Pop Goes The World (2:36)
11. Sugar In My Coffee (3:20)
12. Space Bells (2:35)
13. Blame (4:09)
14. Hang On Irene (3:07)
15. Burning Thunder (3:25)
16. 5 Years After (3:13)

It's kind of hard to try to explain what this stuff sounds like. The musical
styles, whatever they are, get totally wrecked or enhanced by my very
non professional singing voice. Some songs it fits better than others.
Some, it's almost comical for me to try to sing those kind of songs. But
when you're a songwriter, you make do with the vocalists that you have
available, and in this case...that would be me.

Everybody is going to have different favorites (assuming anybody has any
favorites at all) depending on the style of music they like.

Personally, my favorites are:

Wild Of The World
The Last Of The Great Divide (very ELOish...their ballads)
Roll Away (very Cars like...even has a line as a tribute to one of their tunes)
Pop Goes The World
Blame
Hang On Irene (Very Raspberries kind of bubble gum...very different sound)
5 years After

The recording quality on some of the tunes is a little bassy. I'm not used
to digital recording as my last studio was all analogue so this was very
experimental in many ways. As I went along, the recording quality got a
lot better. Mixing in the digital realm with keyboards (digital) and guitars
(analog) is tricky and with not being in the studio for 5 years, I'm rusty as
hell.

But I enjoyed putting this thing together. The musical styles run all over
the place from hard rock (well, hard rock for me anyway) to bubble gum
to Space Bells which is a disco type instrumental that's a little bit on the
out there side.

Truth is, the only way you'd even know I did this whole CD is from my
voice, which I do change at times either through technology or my very
elastic vocal chords.

There are times, even I don't recognize me. If you listen to Billy Joel, he
has a lot of different singing voices too.

You'll probably notice, outside of Blame, which is 4:09, that the songs are
pretty short. This is probably the biggest difference in my writing over the
years. I used to write these epics that went on forever. One 60 minute
cassette that I put together had all of 8 songs on it...4 on each side.

If anybody wants to hear any of these, I'll upload them to YouTube with
a little video that I'll slap together to give you something to watch while
you're holding your ears.

I'll try to make the video fit the song, somehow. Some may be tough to do
though because some of my lyrics are OUT THERE.

Okay, I guess I've rambled on enough. I guess you can tell that music is
my real love. I'd give up IM in a heartbeat if I could make it as a songwriter.

But the truth is...and I realized this after 30 years of trying...I'm just not
good enough.

But this is still a lot of fun.

** EDIT ** I just noticed that playing this CD on my PC, it sounds better
than when I play it on my stereo.

Now that's just sad.

Okay, I admit, I had to look up Kunaki.

Yes, it was the most fun I've had in 5 years. (sigh)

As I'm sure you can tell by now, like you, music is one of my passions.
Sadly my wife says the only song I have a chance of pulling off is Mack The Knife.
If you put together somehit on youtube you can bet your bottom dollar I'll take a peek.

Congrats Steven! I have a band too and for more than 5 years we've only recorded 4 songs and the quality is so far from good I know it's tough and it feels really good completing just one song. Completing a full CD is like an "I can finally die" feeling for some musicians (at least that's what our vocalist feels). So congrats again for your devotion to music, glad to know you haven't forgotten music despite your great IM career.

Thanks Mark. I've actually recorded over 700 songs in my life.

Heaven knows where I found the time.
