I saw a show on the Travel Channel a little while back about a cruise ship that had gone condo. Rather than take a stateroom for a week or two, you actually bought your space and lived on the cruise ship. Your "HOA" fees basically paid for your cruise ship amenities - meals, facilities, laundry, etc.

The ship roams the world, and you often wake up someplace completely different than when you went to sleep.

I've often wondered if that lifestyle would be as much fun and as interesting as it looks.

If I have to pick one place to sink roots, it would have to be someplace tropical and close to the ocean. Preferably directly on the water.

Here in Florida comes pretty close, although this winter has been as chilly as most can remember. Some of the barrier islands have homes with deeded beach access on the gulf and protected frontage on the bay for your boat dock.

If money were no object, I've always loved the energy around Waikiki, so a condo in one of the beach hotels would be a possibility.

I would live in a tax haven...not because of anything illegal...but to avoid paying taxes...(there's a difference between tax evasion and tax avoidance) I mean, if I could live somewhere where they don't take almost half my money, why wouldn't I?

so maybe Belize, Dominican Republic or somewhere equally warm, is where I would go

Yeah, a lot of Carribean islands are great tax wise. They are also beautiful.

I think I would stay stateside. Probably will wind up in Cali somewhere

I like that idea, "living someplace where they don't take almost half your money" in taxes or the permanent cruise sounds good but then year round 72 degree that San Diego offers would truly be welcome after the 70 plus inches of snow we've had this winter.

As for tax avoidance, if you're a US citizen (according to my understanding) you'll get taxed for 10 years even after you leave the US, so I'm not sure how much a tax haven will help you. Then there's the issue of tax treaties with other countries. Not sure how that works wit the US. Seems to me that if you really want to leave, the sooner the better.

I saw this too and it's something I'd really consider if I had the money.

I thnk they hit the big celebrations, France for Tour D France, Rio for Carnival, etc.

In addition to seeing the World while still having a home, all the onboard restaurants, decks, bars, entertainment, etc. make it an interesting lifestyle.

Funny you mention this as I was having a conversation with a wealthy contact of mine that's thinking of purchasing a condo in the next ship to launch (4th I think). Think the cost starts at $1.5m for a 600sq foot condo and goes upto $20m for a 5,000sq ft 'penthouse'. Think they circle the world in 2 or 4 year circles. As said they plan the itinery to avoid bad weather (if possible) and catch major festivals and celebrations. I believe most of the ships have a hotel on board with a limited number of 5 star rooms available to rent for short vacations. Also the ships are registered in a tax free (income) country so you can live tax free (if it complies with your national tax regimes etc).

I'm not sure I'd live in one place so difficult to answer from that point of view. However I like were I'm living at the moment as my health is better in warm weather hence why I moved here for winter (average Lanzarote weather is 70f (daytime) in winter with 58f night time temps).
I agree that I know lots of people waiting for something to live in their ideal place. Many will never do it! Which is a real shame.

That would probably be ok for a while, but if you need a change of scenery and your stuck in the middle of the Atlantic, Pacific or Indian oceans it could become very tiresome, very quickly.

You might be right.

There's a reason that many Hawaiians take their vacations in Las Vegas, and even move there. One Hawaiian I talked to even told me there's a growing "Little Hawaii" neighborhood.

Last time we were there, I pulled a klutz move and just about pulled off one of my toenails. My foot was sore enough that any difficult walking was out of the question. On a couple of side trips, when the group had to hike across tough terrain or something, I ended up staying with the tour bus and talking to the driver.

Seems there's a phenomena called "Rock Fever" that some Hawaiians get. Eventually, the isolation and being surrounded by water drives them crazy and they have to get away. Some treat it with vacations to the mainland, some move permanently.

Looking into the cruise ship condo thing, it seems that most of the owners aren't full-timers. Most are more like our "snowbirds" down here - they come for a few months and then go home. I could see myself doing that - picking and choosing parts of the itinerary to live aboard while maintaining a base on solid ground.

If money was not a factor, I'd like to have lived in Hawaii for a few years, then I'd move to Oslo or Bjorn & then finally to Tizu, that is on the India - China border - love the place.

I am seriously thinking about this. Why should money be an issue? Is it an excuse after all? While I'm working towards this, I honestly don't think I've made the decision to do it. I'm going to sit down & think!!

Either Isla Mujeres, MX or Caye Caulker, Belize. I visited both islands this past Winter and MAN was I impressed.

The internet was quite slow... but worth it.

I was on Isla Mujeres when Hurricane Ida "hit", and it was a beautiful day. I could get used to living in a place like that.

New Zealand for me is the best place around. I am no more than 30 minutes from some of the most beautiful beaches you can find. On top of that winter time, the ski fields are only 2 hours drive.

In addition we are far enough away from the worlds troubles not to have to worry too much

Probably Paris, I have been there a few times and the people are wonderful, I know of a little Parisian bar that I was only in once or twice a few years ago, returned last year and the owner recognised me. That is what I like

Lots of places to think of, but you don't know until you at least visit, however as I learned even in Florida (the keys in the 90's) it's always very different vacationing from living there. That was where I learned to "eat and hang out" where the locals do...my lesson learned well.

Since I have visited Costa Rica, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Cozumel, Peru, Ecuador (at the time, I didn't spend money on anything else and just saved for trips).

Hands down, it's the people of the place that make it what it is....that being said, I have been to Belize numerous times now and would live there in a heartbeat and have looked into it.

The people are amazing!

JohnMcCabe - Hey John that cruise sounds definitely like a good idea. Waking up in a different paradise everyday! I wonder if it doesn't get old after a while...but like many said here, you don't know until you haven't tried.
Toots - I heard many good things about New Zealand and Australia...definitely places to visit....

CDarklock - You know CD, I am not a big country guy, but when you said about living in a big plantation in Georgia or Louisiana, it reminded about my uncle's house. He lives in the middle of nowhere in Brazil, his closest neighbor is about 2 ½ miles away, so there is only cows and goats around, and a breathtaking view of a farm in the middle of hills. I would definitely consider trying something like that. Just imagine, you are in the middle of nowhere, making money online, talking with people all over the world through one of the greatest inventions of mankind...the internet, the signal will probably not be the best, but assuming the technology of nowadays, everything is possible.

I don't know. I was hating Massachusetts because of the cold weather. I was about 45 minutes from Boston, so I never got to enjoy the things that a world class city provides. I moved to Sanford, about 25 minutes from Orlando, and although I love the sun and waking up to the sound of birds, still not feeling that this is the place, you know...like wowwww, I love this place. I only felt that couple of times and that was when I went to vacation and was worry free for couple of days.
I think traveling is the key. I am right beside Sanford Airport and I see planes every five minutes. I would love to be in the airport every other weekend going some place different, and not worrying about money or my job. That's why internet marketing is so appealing to us. Just the thought of being able to work from anywhere in this planet, for just couple of hours a day in the convenience of your laptop, blows my mind. I am not there yet, as a matter fact I just had to go back to the job market, but hey, I will try until I succeed because I know I could make in IM and I just love it!

Sapphire Coast - NSW Australia for me.

I love the country life, but I'm also an avid fisherman so best of both worlds!

Bushland / Rainforest one one side and Beach on the other.

Oh yeah - Did I forget to mention MUST have a Marina with a fully equipped Game Boat moored in the bay??

Weather is Fantastic almost year round. Not too hot, but hardly ever any cold spells that are worthy of note.

Fishing is phenominal as well (Big bonus for me )

I would live in Philippines, because it has a lot to offer when it comes to beautiful places. Lots of wonderful view, and under water species that only seen in the Philippines. The weather is warm, the beaches was so amazing. So if I were you I would choose to live in the Philippines because for me it's a wonderful paradise.^_^

I'm in Austin.

Even if money were no object... I'd stay in Austin, but live in a gorgeous house I designed myself.

Austin is a great city to live in - lots of stuff to do and a great handful of off-the-wall people down here. Despite the fact you pretty much never be caught dead outdoors between February and October when it's constantly 100 degrees out, other than that it's pretty awesome.

Would like a summer home though (between May-August - the other months occasionally fluctuate so I'm okay during that time) somewhere up north, either Boston, Seattle or both. Of course, both summer houses would be custom-designed by yours truly.

Easy, I would live under the sun!
You said if money was not an object right? So here is what I would do....Get a big giant map, find out what are the warmest places to live in the world each month, (with best life styles, culture and all that jaz), get the finest architecture and construction company to build me a house. Then have a clone of the exact same house in all the locations all wired up and connected in a manner that would make it impossible for me to know when I'm in a different country.

Then here is the beauty, you would only ever find me at home where the sun shines!

If money were no factor I would have 2 places - one in the NW for the summers - and one in the southern area around NM or AZ -- and of course I'd spend a month per year in the NE.

I can't imagine being just one place for too long, but I could rotate between favorites on a seasonal basis really happily.

I would have to own a horse ranch somewhere in the states with some mountains around me. I'd probably have to own several other types of livestock and pay my workers with the money made from IM. I'd have a 10-15,000 sqft log cabin with all of the amenities needed. I love to hunt and fish so there would be plenty of wild game and would have many lakes and ponds on the property. Of course with all that money, whenever I felt the need to get away for a few weeks or months that's no problem. But to wake up early and look across the valley at my horses and other animals, with a haze lifting from the ground with the sun coming up over the mountains, maybe some deer and turkey and elk feeding off in the distance, and fish jumping in the lake. Oh yeah, it's a beautiful way to start the day.

If you had the money why would you want to live anywhere specific. Why not see the world - all of it.

OK you'd probably give Afghanistan, Iraq, N Korea, Somalia and other trouble spots a miss, but why not be a citizen of the world.

Winter time any big ski resort. Spring & Autumn any warm location, Caribbean, Bahamas etc. and the summer in the UK if its dry. So I might come home for a weekend..LOL

Anywhere that respect the freedom of the individual - Which apparently is not America anymore - but then, I suspect that America is going to be on fire in a very real way in the near future - and I mean actual fire.

So... I like the beach, so how about an island away from governments, in a tropical zone. And if money is no object, I could buy one of those Suitcase Nukes from the Russian 5 and dime to keep my island safe.

I live in the UK and i always will keep my roots planted here but the other place i am really taken by is Canada around Vancouver i have visited the place many times and i am actually looking at buying a small holding out in that location within the next 18-24 months when the house prices pick up again i will offload one of my houses that i own down wales and this will go towards the property in Canada.
