Avatar = Worst Movie in Last 5 Years, Hurt Locker = Best

Can anyone just chime in and agree with me? If you don't, I will just argue with you and it wont be fun and will interrupt my day.

Hurt locker was an emotional character based masterpiece that left my heart pounding and... i almost felt like crying.

Avatar left me angry. IT was about blue people plugging their pony tails into flying horses (in a sexual, beastial sort of way). The plot was terrible and this movie was complete garbage.

Special effects mean nothing to me, and if they did, Avatar just wasn't that special to me.. even in special effects.

Its about story and characters. Hurt locker was near-perfect.

Hurt Locker was ok, but it wasn't anything "near-perfect".

I must admit I hadn't heard of it until last night either, so I haven't seen it.

I have seen Avatar and I loved it, I thought it was a great movie. Everyone has different taste and for me Avatar is probably the best movie I've seen in a long time.

Ah I love personal opinions of movies. I love them because no matter how right you are in your own beliefs you are always wrong to somebody else.

What makes a movie great is based on what you like. If you like character driven movies thats great, but if you like fluff that is full of CGI and action, that is also great.

I love all types of movies from thought provoking to beat 'em ups and shoot 'em ups. I really love the movies the critics pan as critics tend to look to deep into a movie when also you are supposed to do is watch it.

I have not watched Avatar yet, want to watch it 3D , but I got friends saying it's the best movie in the world.
I've watched Hurtlocker though, and I really liked it, it was actually a true story, there is a Veteran doing this and etc, his activities and etc. It made me close to crying, 9.99/10 for Hurt Locker

Avatar is a great movie and it's entertaining. The hurt locker is great also, but war movies sickened me. But if we're going to rate both movies according to lesson, I'll vote for the hurt locker. It's the reality of our world.

      - about how gullible our society is to advertising. I agree that Hurt Locker was the better movie by far. I must admit that I liked looking at Avatar - just as I like looking at the Titanic movie. But Both of those are tacky! Complete cheeseville on both accounts. They could win on cinematography alone, but that's it.

Hurt Locker brings the pain of war to life in a unique way that I haven't seen since Apocalypse Now.

Yeah, because the nightly news doesnt bring the 'pain of war'.

If i want to see reality, i'll turn on the news. I go to the movies to be entertained, forget about things like soldiers getting vaporized in the middleeast. Why would i want to pay for what i can watch on youtube.

        Have you seen Hurt Locker?

The point is the Hurt Locker isn't the same as most war movies. And no the nightly news doesn't come anywhere close to showing what the Hurt Locker shows.

There's a reason why Avatar didn't win. And that's because it's a complete cheese fest. Yes I agree that people like escapism, but they don't like to be treated like idiots. The plot and acting had more corn in it than an illinois deer turd. I liked the movie, but it was more of a "Transformers" type of movie. One of those movies that you think is really cool the first time you see it, but in a few years when the technology is in other movies, you'll go back and watch this movie and see that the cheese has risen to the surface. Kind of like Twister - or Independence Day.

I didn't care for avatar and usually I love movies with huge explosions and effects.

I thought it was boring, the plot was shoving its views down your face, and the characters were un-interesting.

My favorite movie was probably blind side (which is weird, usually it's some crazy action movie).

Blind side brought me to tears, of course I told my date that all I had done was yawned but I think she saw right through me.

see..i dont get this. I've heard this repeated many times and I didnt see an 'agenda' to avatar..any more than i would see an agenda to star trek. It's a sci-fi movie..pitting good vs evil...the oldest 'agenda' known to man and the basis for a good amount of movies made.

Did rocky also have an agenda i just didnt pick up on? Was starwars really a soapbox for lucas to spread his own propaganda...

Unless one thinks the evil isn't so evil, then plausible deniability or cognitive dissonance reflects and says more about the person.

Seen lots of bad, corny movies with bad plots and corny theme agendas, just simply a bad movie is all, if it gets one that riled, then its something in you.

I probably would not watch Avatar again, even for free on t.v. unless it was a verrrry sloooow day and there was absolutely NOTHING else to do or watch, then maybe.

The folks that made all that money is not going to lose one blink of sleep over what you or I think, good or bad.

Let's see, a camera thats prints money at a comparable speed to the U.S. Treasury by sucking the money out our pockets, no matter what our opinion is or was, hmmmm, yeah, he's worrying over those who did'nt like it.

"The Terminator" maker "terminates" the box office, yet AGAIN.

Avatar box office totals: Worldwide= $2,599,607,444..., thats BILLION with a "B" gang.

Oh, and that's probably NOT including the merchandising products.

The views I am talking about are environmental stuff. I mean I'm not against nature or anything, but this "We sent them back to their own dying planet" and all of that just started to really bug me.

Agenda? Oh I don't think the movie producer was thinking "ooh lets get people to all believe this!" I just remember feeling like the movie was hitting me with a sludgehammer that we need to go green.

That is what I remember at least, it has been awhile.

I love transformers! It didn't take itself to seriously and was just what it was, an action flick with hot girls.

Avatar just felt long and boring to me, special effects are cool, but they don't make a movie for me. I dunno, I think the movie really moved way to slowly for me.

That and like I said, all I remember is feeling like the plot was

    Large corporations = bad!

    Hippy views = good!

By the end I wanted those humans to win!

I didn't find that at all - the 'go green' message, didn't even occur to me when watching the movie. I got to see a movie to enjoy the movie not to think about what message it 'could' be trying to send me.

Like I said earlier, people have different opinions and different tastes. I don't even know why there is an argument about which movie is best, obviously some are going to like one and others like the other.

For me, I liked Avatar, I've seen it twice and would probably watch it again.

I go to see a movie for fun - it doesn't matter if its true or deep and meaningful. Movies are an escape from reality, a great way to relax and get your mind of other things. Avatar did that for me - my vote is for Avatar!

It turns out that Hurt Locker is as much a fiction as Avatar. The soldiers that actually do the work depicted in the movie say the movie has nothing at all to do with the reality of the job, making Hurt Locker just another form of escapism.

That's the power of exceptional filmmakers, they can take any story, pulled out of any writers butt, and make a great movie. It's best to just enjoy the emotional release movies give.

I have not seen Hurt Locker yet but oddly yes - Avatar while pushing leftist imperatives such as environmentalism & anti colonialism in fact glamorizes war & mass violence more than it does anything else.

Oddly that does not register when you first watch the film as your mind is clouded by the pretty images and moral impressions. Anyway its certainly not a high IQ movie.

    People

Avatar was the cheesiest movie I think I've ever seen. Are you kidding me? I mean give me a break.

Cameron has done good movies, but this was a total disaster.

I do not get how ANYONE can like that ROTTEN horrible movie.

    I don't give a _________ that it made money.

Hurt Locker was great. The characters were GREAT. Are you kidding me? It was an emotionally moving masterpiece.

And I dont CARE that it wasn't realistic. The EMOTIONS the characters feel were realistic. To me they could've been shooting laser guns in Avatar land.

I dont think that movie was designed to be some mega-realistic depiction of iraq. It was about emotions. It really annoys me when people gripe about it not being 100% realistic.

(Speaking of Avatar land -- give me half a billion dollars, a pen, a napkin, and one hour, and I'll honestly come up with a more creative world than "Pandora").

PS -- Maybe my subject was an overstatment. I also liked No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood.

PPS - I also grew up with star wars and LOVE star wars. Avatar and star wars shouldn't be in the same sentence, ever. Lucas's world was creative genius. How many creatures were there in Pandora? 4? Including that horse that the aliens had to plug their ponytails in? Give me a break.

Avatar is a movie conceived in the mind of a progressive liberal dolt who believes that all capitalism is the "rape and pillage" of all resources by evil, capitalistic humans.

So in a real way, it is an insult to every IM'er on this forum.

What could have been a great movie if it had a plot was a nothing more than a super expensive piece of pathetic propaganda for what I see as an essentially "Hippie Paradise" - except the hippies are 10 foot tall and blue.

Alice in Wonderland (the latest one by Tim Burton) is a better movie - classic good and evil, classic struggle against all odds. Hell, my flip-book is a better movie.

Now, of someone would spend 300 million dollars on the production of Atlas Shrugged, now that would be one hell of a movie!

The Avatar plot was certainly no masterpiece and the end could be easily predicted about two mins into the film. However the effects were entertaining in themselves and I did enjoy the film. My kids loved it. I feel that they coild have made it far better by strengthening the story and the way in which it unfolded.

Plot-wise this is a film that has already been made many times.

Hurt Locker - Is a movie full of propaganda crap, notice how all the Muslims in the movie were seen as the bad guys and the Americans were seen as the heroes when movies like this win a majority of the academy awards you know the whole event is rigged. I am not saying the movie was bad but it did not deserve all those awards considering the other movies which had come out. As for Avatar the first time i watched i was so mesmerized by the 3d effects i wasn't really paying attention to the story line the 2nd time i watched it was at a friends house who had a bootleg version where the quality was pretty bad so it gave me more time to focus on the story line which was very cliched and i was expecting alot better from Mr. Cameron.

Anyway, all good movies are about characters and their actions, not about special effects. So the characters were flat, the plot was boring and the scenes did not evoke any emotions. Actors? They were ok but that's all. I liked the special effects in Avatar but did not like the movie. IMHO.

The hurt locker brought me back down to earth. Seeing what those soldiers face everyday makes me so glad to not have to worry whether i'll die the next second. Avatar seems like a piece of fluff now, though I admit I enjoyed the effects.
