Do you believe in Ghosts? Those barely visible spooky things?

I actually do, because I know a camp where there is 1 place where people say there are ghosts, I've went there, I heard scary sounds, and I saw a show about a Prison in California, where ghosts live(d).
I do believe in them.

do you also believe in unicorns and leprechauns ?
I don't. How long have humans been using what is known as the scientific method (empirical evidence) and still no one has ever found proof of "ghosts", if they existed at all wouldn't there be at least one who would show up when the Press or scientists were gathered about ? Over a billion people have died, at least one would've "shown himiself" to many authority types at once. Maybe there all riding in UFO's and too busy. If you think you saw one then why can't you take someone else with you and let them see it too ? Why would a ghost hide ? How could hiding benefit them ?
No I do not believe that after you die your disembodied spirit wanders the earth, forever spooking people, or even for a few minutes until there's an opening in Heaven or something.

Given that neither leprechauns nor unicorns exist, demonstrate through formal logical principles that ghosts also do not exist.

      Too hard?

Okay, try it backwards. Given that ghosts do exist, demonstrate through formal logical principles that both leprechauns and unicorns must also exist.

Or... perhaps we can skip all this. Perhaps the existence or nonexistence of phenomenon A does not necessarily imply the existence or nonexistence of phenomenon B.

Perhaps one can believe something - like, say, that the universe is (or is not) finite - and yet be unable to prove it using empirical evidence.

Those of us who believe in both science and God are well aware of this. If you think that's somehow contradictory, you're a poor sort of thinker.

Scientist know just recently on the world existance of man that dark matter / energy makes up a whopping 90% of the physical universe, yet it is invisible!

Some of us / you experience unexplained apparitions and or experiences that cannot be explained.
I think it is about 5% of the population who experience these things?
There is no doubt in my mind that there is an invisible existance of something out there.
My living experiences will testify to it!

People will perhaps go on doubting unless they witness something...human nature.

you realize that ghosts in many forms are reported almost daily by people right?

and yeah, there has been data showing what may very well be ghosts..etc.

So you believe in heaven....but you don't believe in ghosts?

    Why??!

If you were a ghost and you kept trying to make yourself known in the only way you could would you waste your time if everytime you threw a pebble around the room the so-called scientists kept checking every damn thing except what is actually true?

Occams Razor goes the other way too you know, if scientists deduct everything else it could be from a draught to a shaky door then it must be a ghost. Yet they refuse that. Don't any of them have a clue that energy is just another state of matter, albeit low mass?

This reminds me of an episode of most haunted, that damnable Yvette Fielding constantly does it, she asks if a ghost is there...a sound is made, she asks if it was really a sound, another is made...she asks for confirmation of the sound and the ghosts gets pissed off and throws a wardrobe at her.

And I am confused as to why a ghost would really waste its time wandering around simply to spook someone, when I die I have much nobler perversions on my mind :p

Well I am open minded on this.

However, here is the latest "Bottled Ghosts". I kid you not

Here in sunny New Zealand someone is trying to sell 2 ghosts in a bottle on an auction site called Trade Me (it's a local version of Ebay)

They claim that their house was haunted and they brought in a exorcist who trapped the ghosts in bottle of holy water. They claim not to have had any problems since. The best thing about it is there are people out there bidding on these 2 bottles of water. At last count the bidding was up to $5000 (New Zealand Dollars)

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, you have to admit that this is very strange.

      It's possible

Whose to say no one hasn't caught anything on tape? This day in age you could catch a ghost on tape and half people would believe it, the other half would call it fake. There's been many, many, many, capturings, whether it be video, or EVP. It's up to you if you think it's real or not.

Just cuz they've been known to make sounds and what not doesn't mean they can just show themselves on que. Its not something anyone understands.

Whether you believe it or not I'm sure if you stay the night in a place known for hauntings you will experience some creepy things.
      {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[1841269].message }}

Then they will just claim it is because expectations are raised and that they are not fully in control of their emotions because it is night...there really is no explaining to some people.

I am sure if something threw itself across the room at them without any direct physical force they will still say something ridiculous like there was a magnet behind them :p

And yes, I have been in a few houses with dubious reputations (hehe) and have even been asked to join semi-professional teams on occasion, maybe because of my ability to notice everything but by the same token not discount anything because of prejudice.

I am open minded about both the scientific approach AND the metaphysical approach and I think that everyone should be like that, too swing too far in one direction simply closes you off too much and you become unbalanced.

These laughable programmes on the television like that Jonathon Frakes travesty do nothing to actually galvanise anyone to actually do anything but scoff at claims of even their own peers.

Well, the idea of ghosts exists because people have the tendency of getting excited when it deals with the paranormal. However, if you read the Bible, God explicitly said that the soul of a dead body goes to Heaven or Hell. They can't return to haunt us or if they have unfinished business.

Proving the existence of ghosts is like proving that aliens are real.

I bought my house in '98, build in '63 and heard it had ghosts from the neighbors. (You know how that goes, like after you and your boyfriend break up, everybody tells you what a jerk they thought he was, great thanks)

Had some strange happenings from time to time, my dog who past sure seemed to know more than me.

On a couple of times, I would be working in my office and he would start fussing like heck, thought the cats were just messing with him, came out for coffee only to find all of the cabinet doors in the kitchen fully hanging open. The cats can not reach those top ones, and all of them? This was not during the evening, although I think most people think of these things during the night.

Statistically speaking more hauntings actually occur during the daytime than at night, but because our lives tend to be busy we are much less focused on it. If at night we hear creaking floorboards we tend to be terrified, during the day it is simply passed off as a truck driving by.

It makes sense for there to be more hauntings during the day purely from an energy perspective, the same way cemeteries are basically dead of activity at night when you look at the numbers, there simply is nothing there for them to latch onto.

My references to no one yet proving ghosts exist is that some people claim to have "seen" them. So if they can make themselves seen or if they simply can be seen, then someone would have gotten proof by showing many others a ghost. If I saw what I thought was anything "unbelievable", I'd want to show some others so that I could determine if I were crazy (that's another argument) or simply mistaken. Those who say they "have seen a ghost", are they being truthful ? I don't think they are, they may honestly think they saw one but that is not seeing one.

        With that mouse squeak?

Ghosts are not scary, it is the darkness people are afraid of, peering into the darkness and not knowing exactly what is there.

As I stated earlier most ghosts are active during the daytime yet many people simply don't care about them, who could be scared of a bedsheet?

Not necessarily.. the right conditions may have to be present for a ghost to still have it's roots or presence in this dimension. For example, if you look at many of the ghost stories or really active spots, not always, but many times they are surrounded by extraordinary or violent events.. or the spirits attached here for other reasons.

I'm on the fence as far as believing in the paranormal and ghosts.. I have had a few strange things occur to me in the past, but nothing so earthshaking I can say 100%... I am a HUGE fan of Ghost Hunters (and GHI) and a couple other programs.. Haven't missed an episode of GH or GHI in the 5+ years they've been around..

    Hi,

There is a lot of debate on this topic!

There are both Good (Holy Spirit) and Bad Spirits ( Evil / Satanic Influence) .. according to Bible. There are lot of instances where Jesus is said to have cast our spirits.

In my understanding, I don't believe dead people come back for whatever reason. It's just Satan's ( Dark Force - I don't know other terms that is common/non-religious ) way of threatening and luring people. It's just a fear factor that it brings to divert people and take them away from reality or truth.

I have heard people tell lot of stories about ghosts and other things ... I have seen few weird things .. In my opinion they are NOT ghosts as in the term dead people wandering without peace but rather evil forces.

It's just my opinion .. Sorry if it's wrong or misguiding!

    Regards

I believe in life after death.
I believe the physical body is simply a "meat suit" for the soul.
I believe there are Earth-bound souls.

Just like UFOs, they are seen and documented on a regular basis, but, they are accepted as false until proven true.

That's like guilty until proven innocent.

Our "meat suit" is a barrier that prevents us from being aware of many things.
We've all had that feeling of being watched. Or, seen that movement out of the corner of our eye.

I have seen and heard emperical evidence as well as personal experience.

But, there again, it comes down to, "prove it's real".

    The evidence is everywhere.

I say, "prove it's not real".

I definitely believe in them.. having had various experiences. I don't think it's the seeing them that's a problem..It's explaining away what you have seen and experienced..

I currently live in a haunted location that often has occurences. It has never bothered me until a recent happening, which I cannot explain to this day. Here's what happened.. (cut a long story short)

I was sat in the living room at my pc. Opposite me about 8 feet away is the living room door which exits to the bottom of the stairs. This door has frosted glass.

It was exactly 3.08am, everyone was in bed and if anyone had excited any of the rooms up stairs then it would have been evident. The living room door was slightly open , there was no sound from upstairs or downstairs or my pc.

At 3.08 I heard a sort of shuffle at the top of the stairs..then the sound of someone waliking down the stairs. The sound appeared to be someone who was much heavier than anyone in our household and for a split second, I thought it was one of my family members, and I sat there waiting for who ever it was to walk through the door.. it hit me like a brick when it suddenly dawned on me that no doors had opened upstairs and what ever it was walking down the stairs wasn't anyone from upstairs. It never got to the bottom as I quickly shot into the kitchen area staring at the living room door waiting for what ever it was to show itself.

I will never forget that night and this is the only time I have ever been affected by the strange goings on...

I've always believed in the paranormal but this definitely sealed a lid on it for me..

Although empirical proof of the existence of ghosts is lacking, there is so much anecdotal evidence over the centuries that it would be intellectually arrogant to deny the possibility of their existence.

Perhaps the tools simply don't exist yet. It took us humans how many millenia to discover the presence of germs and their role in causing certain illnesses? How many centuries to figure out that electrons traveling through space could be used to communicate?

Scientists using particle accelerators are laying the groundwork for faster-than-light travel, which will open the entire universe to us. We may even discover that we are not alone in the universe, and that there are indeed races that make humanity look like backwards children.

To answer the original question, do I believe in ghosts? No, not at this time. Nor do I disbelieve in their existence. My jury is still out...

Right on. Atoms, electrons were not in existence(except in theory) until recently until we actually had tools to record their presence. Even though there is strong belief by scientist in multiple universes and many more dimensions than we can experience as humans have we been able to find a way to study or measure these?

Sounds like a poltergeist. Scary stuff! As long as there hasn't been a physical incident where somebody has gotten hurt, then I guess you're able to continue living there peacefully?

          Hi Hanz,
No there hasn't been any physical incidents. There have been many strange happenings in the house. We have had many sightings and strange things happen but the feeling in the house isn't a bad one..I'd say a more friendly sort of feeling if you can understand that.

When we first moved in, we took the living room door off the hinges for painting the next day.. We were all up stairs doing various tasks one night when there was the sound of a door slamming downstairs.. this might not sound anything out of the ordinary but the only door that could have been possibly slammed like that was the one that we had took off the hinges.. there are no other doors down stairs apart from the back door which is PVC in the kitchen and the front door and it was impossible for these to slam because they were both locked..

          Simply cannot explain it...

I do believe in ghosts. I also believe that there are other ethereal beings that don't fit the general "ghost" idea. I've encountered plenty of them, including very nasty ones.

I'm a part-time paranormal investigator. I'm trying to make my own team in Utah since there is only one other team there that I know of who is completely professional about their work.

I've seen weird things my whole life, and even though I'm young, I've already had people ask for advice on what to do about "encounters" in their homes.

So yeah, I believe in them. Heck, I hunt for them. Especially the nasty ones.

Do you see the air you breathe or all the blood pumping through your body? Well, we all know these are both essential for our very existence. I believe in ghosts - they are real. Have you every been going to do something and for some reason you didn't do it. One day I was driving and for some unknown reason I stopped at a green light, my husband asked me why I had stopped when the truck that was indicating to turn the corner come straight through a red light. We could have been killed or at best received terrible injuries. Was it a ghost that stopped me or what? I don't know but I am not going to rule out there existence.

I don't believe in Ghosts. I believe that people rest in the grave and wait for the ressurection when they die. I do believe that there are angels and demons roaming the earth though. Basically I believe they are good spirits and bad spirits, but the people who have died are not roaming the earth. They are resting. That is my belief based on the bible.

sarahberra - I totally understand where you are coming from. I am a devout Christian, but I just can't discount the things I've seen. Angels, demons, other things . . . I've seen them all, and made contact with some too. (Yes, they've tried to contact me. Not through Ouija boards or anything though!) So I would like to think the dead rest, but I'm not always positive.

I try to think of my abilities as a gift from God even though they confuse me and have driven a wedge between me and other Christians. I have to believe he gave them to me for a reason.

EDIT: Ack! I thought the quick reply button would send this just to sarahberra! I didn't know it would post it! Sorry, not meaning to go all religious in this thread!

Human nature being what it is anything that isnt rationally explained cant exist, bit like so called 'aliens from outer space'. Are we so arragant to think we are the only planet with life? In relation the size of other planets in the universe earth is a mere 1 grain of sand in the ocean.
I think a ghost is a persons spirit that hasnt found peace after dying. An illustration would be an experience of mine, and several other people over a 9 year period. We bought this house and for a few months I lived there by myself. Always there was this feeling of someone constantly being very close behind me.Keep looking behind stuff.
Later when my wife joined me this feeling stayed but not quite so intense. Each of our 3 daughters would come and stay now and then, as would friends. Always in the same bedroom. Later daughter A and child came to live for couple years after splitting from hubby and they had that bedroom.Often A would ask me who had closed/opened the window, not us. In quick succession 3 replacement mirrors fell off the wall and broke,no apparent reason. We had a party just before selling the house - my wife was never happy there, always felt another presence. However someone made a remark about sleeping in the bedroom and waking up feeling they werent alone. I replied dont worry thats our friendly ghost and with that everyone had a similar story to tell, common was waking feeling something blowing on their cheek, case of another with toothache having their face
gently rubbed, having something sitting on the bed, and so on.
We arent some crackpot family,we are well educated, successfull I would say in most respects and I am often criticised as seeing things as black and white with ocassional shade of grey, wife is bit more liberal than me and is a law clerk, daughters are all very astute business people as are our friends in this situation, one is also the pastor of his church.
Two neighbours were at this party, so I asked them. I knew the previous owners wife had died not long before we bought. They wouldnt tell me much except she died bit mysterious and hubby had a bad mental problem.
There it is, none of us have experienced anything similar since, was just that particular house.

Ghosts, entities, things that go bump in the night...I have no doubt. While I can't say for certain that I have seen a ghost, I have witnessed something else. I spend an enormous amount of time in the great outdoors and overnight often, sometimes for weeks. About 3 years ago, while I was counting wolves, I saw something that made the hairs on the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

What was it? I have no idea, the only way I can explain it is to say that I saw the darkness move, a large shape that glided, only slightly more visible than the darkness of night around it. And I'm not the only one either, my horses saw it too, and they aren't usually bothered by anything that we encounter. First time in my life I ever witnessed 2 horses trying to be invisible. They never moved, made a sound, twitched, and I'm pretty sure that they stopped breathing for few seconds while it passed by. Afterwords, they were literally shaking.

At first light, we got the hell out of there, and I've never been back.

To suggest that we know all, about everything, is just plain foolishness! There are many things that happen which provide no explanation nor understanding for us. Are they all paranormal, no, of course not, but there is that small percentage of events that defy everything we thought we knew.

i'm not sure I believe in ghosts but I do believe in energy and it's ability to remain somewhere that a body is no longer. I just liken it to people that you know are in a room because you can feel their energy. Have you ever had someone come into a room and even if you aren't watching the door you just "know" they are there? And at times too when someone leaves your presence don't you still feel them there? That is their energy and some people have a more forceful energy field than others. I believe that energy does not "die" with a person but instead is residual.

Ghosts, as in the apparitions that repeat the same action when they show up, over and over again? Just energy that got stored and something triggers it being played back now and again.

Ghosts as far as fluently contextual apparitions of some sort? Why not. Who knows when our energies might be able to pass through a vortex or dimensional doorway? Or what else can as well. Deamons are not of the earthly dimension yet they have been known to break through here. Energy is not destructable, it can only be transformed. So we are extisting on some level after this planetary existence, and it isn't that wild of an idea to think we shoul dbe able to cross dimesional barriers at some time or another.

Don't blame the ghosts for not showing themselves to everyone. If the scientists get hold of them they will be pulled apart, rearranged, bits tacked on or taken off and a whole lot of engineering done to ensure that they meet man's expectations. If I were a ghost I would not be showing myself either.

Even the top scholars of a religion disagree with each other on some issues. They might account for some events differently than those who experience them. I've heard the things we call "ghosts" referred to as deamons and angels. At one time the church taught we are the center of the universe. It was extreme heresy to say that the earth revolved around the sun, and the thought of a being from a different planet would have completely toppled people. For around a thousand years some Christian churches taught that science was evil - not sure if other religions did, not familiar enough with their history's. However - now we have quantum physics that goes a long way to proving survival after life, and we see change. We see that science and religion can co-exist on some levels. So although your local pastor may not believe in ghosts - the one down the street further might, and if so, probably can cite evidence from scripture that they are possible. If I recall the religion is based on a man transcending death and returning to visit friends in the form of a "spirit" -- which is just another name for a ghost. Perhaps actual ghosts, too, have work they feel needs to be done here before they leave?

I believe in ghosts, and I think that it is something that can be explained with science.

The first law of thermodynamics states that matter/energy cannot be created nor can it be destroyed. The quantity of matter/energy remains the same. It can change from solid to liquid to gas to plasma and back again, but the total amount of matter/energy in the universe remains constant.

Your thoughts, emotions..etc. are transferred through the synapses in your brain via electrical synapses...a form of energy. While your body may die off, the energy within your body that does things like hold memories, your consciousness doesnt just disappear.

I think thats why you hear of ghosts that 'haunt' some place for years or centuries. I think that this 'haunting' are residual memories of things that person did, their energy has not dissipated that much and still has something of a 'form'. After a while, energy will dissipate, but it will not disappear. 'They' have no physical form, which means they don't have a brain, tactile sense, vision..etc...the point being that consciousness doesnt have the physical requirments to create new memories...so the remaining consciousness just replays what 'memories' it does have...probably jsut the high points...like time of death, or their 'high' point in life (being in a battle, a special place in the house, etc.) and continues to do so until that energy dissipates to the point that we can physicall no longer be aware of their presence. That doesnt mean those ghosts aren't still there, we just can't see/hear them, but many different people/groups have registered high levels of various forms of measurable activity in places that are considered 'haunted'.

    thats just my opinion though

      True story.

I used to live in an apartment complex where an elderly couple lived 2 doors down from me.

Every night around 12:30 a.m., the gentleman would open his squeaky screen door and stand outside his apartment to smoke a cigarette. The smell of the cigarette would drift through my open window, and I could see his shadow silhouetted against my window shades.

I bet you know where this is going!

Anyway, one day the old man dies. A week passes by, and I'm in my kitchen getting a drink (of water!). The time is around 12:30 a.m. I hear that noisy screen door open, and then I start smelling the smoke. I look at my window, but I don't see any shadow.

So I turn out the light in the kitchen and open the shades to have a look, but there is no one there!

This never happened again. I think he just wanted one last smoke before moving on.
