Been using limewire for a while to download music to listen to while working but lately I've been getting more and more problems like "stalled" "can't find file" or mp3's that are just advertising. Driving me nuts.

For example this Warrior thread http://www.warriorforum.com/off-topi...d-do-tell.html recommends some great music but I just can't get most of the songs

So I really hope some one can recommend a trouble free website where you can search for and down load music. Pleaseeeeeee

Thanks for the tips on Itunes.

What I'm after though is a free site.

Itunes is pay. Sites like limewire are free.

Members of this forum are extremely opposed to any form of pirating as many are product creators. You'll have to ask elsewhere.

Aren't there websites like limewire (but better) where you can legally download music for free?

No, they are all pirate sites (including limewire) as far as the owners of the music are concerned. The only free music is that which is in the public domain and music which the artist/copyright holder has released for free.

Be careful, I wasn't joking about the attitude towards pirating here.

Limewire promotes pirating,ie the theft of property that belongs to others.
Limewire also is one of the best places for people to get a computer full of viruses, malwares, etc etc.
I always have to wonder how someone was brought up so that they have the attitude that they shouldn't have to pay for something that others do.

Have a good time with that.

Actually, limewire is a great piece of software. P2P sharing technology is not always used for pirating. Many times it is, but there's also many musicians out there that have become famous because they've distributed their music via software like limewire. There are a lot of users out here using limewire and p2p networks in a legitimate way. And most likely we'll all be using p2p networks, whether you realize you're using it or not.

Also - the new limewire comes w/ AVG antivirus software built into it.

Musicians do not distribute their music through limewire. It has one purpose, and that is to steal software/music. Musicians who want to distribute their stuff for free do it through itunes or facebook or myspace or their own website.

limewire software is fine. The network it is hooked to is a seething cauldron of viruses.

People who havent been into peer 2 peer before dont know the history of limewire.

Limewire, bearshare and kazaa all share the same network, and about 5-6 years ago were the hot piece of p2p to have. Then the RIAA started a major campaign against online piracy and there were more than a few recording companies and even individual artists that paid quite a few companies to dump virused up copies of their music onto limewire. Its very common to download a piece of music from limewire and be boogying along to your newly ill-gotten piece of music in headphones or on your stereo speakers and about midway through the music youll suddenly get a bone jarring (and speaker damaging) *BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ* that will damn near make your ears bleed if you have headphones on. Some of the files arent even mp3's, they are just labled as an mp3's but by the time you get it on your machine..its too late.

I probalby talk to atleast 10 people a day who tell me 'i dont know where i'm getting these viruses from' and then i find out they have a highschool or college age person using the machine that is a dedicated limewire user.

I agree that many viruses come from the P2P network. But they do NOT come from limewire. If you think that's the case, then you have no idea how p2p works. That's like saying that the virus you get when visiting a website came from your browser.

And yes musicians absolutely do distribute their music through the p2p network. It's just about the only way a no-name band can make a name for themselves any more.

People get viruses because they do try to use it to download copyrighted material. The same thing would happen if you tried to download copyrighted material without limewire. - Go ahead, do a google search for any copyrighted material on google. You'll end up on a Warez site, where you're just as likely to get a virus.

However, if you stay away from the forbidden material, limewire is a perfectly fine and extremely useful piece of software.

yeah..except for itunes, facebook, myspace and their own websites.

Downloading copywritten material doesnt automatically give you a virus. Downloading viruses disguised as copywritten material specifically put out as pirate bait will give you a virus.

Its extremely useful if you're stealing software/music.

Limewire is only used by people that dont know any better...like kids or people that dont know how to use bit torrent sites.

Um.... you do know that bittorrent is p2p right? And that limewirePro handles bittorrent files?

People like you don't use it, because you don't properly know how to use it. Like any tool on the internet (including yourself ) you have to know how to properly use them. It's not the tool that gives you the virus.

Also - Limewire actually has a store that is very similar to i-Tunes for those musicians that want to sell their music rather than give it away. And it's used by alot more people than just "kids".

You sound like my Grandpa, and his reasons for not getting a computer. lol

while bit-torrent is a form of p2p, it is not the only form of p2p. When you dl from limewire, you are dling a single file from asingle source, unless that source goes offline, then the software queries other sources on the network for the same file.

Bit torrent takes little pieces of files from multiples sources..all the time.

pay attention: I did not say the tool gave the virus..i said the network gave the virus. I can make the bolded line above bigger if you need help reading it.

No one said Limewire wasn't good software.
There are many P2P software apps out there and many of them are good.
Limewire is just good software being put to bad use,as is a lot of P2P software.

The majority of the machines I had to fix when I had my shop open was virus infections from kids AND adults using software apps like Limewire.

Peer-to-peer (p2p) file sharing client LimeWire has admitted that security is an ingoing issue for users of the Gnutella file sharing network.
"Viruses and spam continue to be a problem on the Gnutella network," a spokesperson for the company told Computerworld Australia following the announcement that it had signed AVG to integrate its anti-virus and anti-spyware protection into LimeWire's paid-for file sharing application, LimeWire Pro.

That's a network, that's not limewire. And KimW I realize that you are saying that limewire is fine. But when Michael puts out an insult at anyone that uses it. He's saying that it's not fine.

Of course I wouldn't give it to my teenager, but Believe me I'm no computer idiot. I realize that many viruses can come from the p2p network if used improperly. But to say that the only people that use limewire don't know any better, just points out your own ignorance on the subject. There are several popular bands out there right now that give credit to software like limewire for making them popular. There's a large network of people using p2p for legitimate purposes, and yes a lot of them use limewire.

Hey genius...what network does limewire connect to? That would be the gnutella network. THE ONLY network it connects to. Along with bearshare and kazaa (if they are even still used)

Well gee, why wouldnt you give it to your teenager..its completely safe right? And yeah you're right, people that know better would obviously choose a virus laden network to pull their files from. Thats what all the really computer smart people do. It has nothing to do with 'using improperly'. The network purposely had tons of mp3's and software thrown on it that either had viruses (primarily trojans) in the file, or were just viruses or trojans disguised as a popular file. Connecting to the gnutella network puts you at risk for infection, this is not breaking news to most internet users who don't have a curfew.

What exactly would be the legitimate purpose for using p2p software? Lets see...would it be to download legal demos? nah...you can get those from the software publisher itself with no threat of viruses and at a faster transfer speed. Transferring files? Nah..can be done in email, VPN, lots of ways that dont require you to hook up to a virus incubator. Yeah, you can find things like ebooks on there much like you can at any of a bazillion free PLR sites that wont make you play russian roulette with viruses.

Saying that you use limewire for 'legitimate purposes' is like saying you read Playboy for the articles.

LOL - I'm enjoying watching you dig your hole of ignorance...

That's ok, believe whatever you want. It's actually extremely easy to use limewire in a legitimate way, and people do it all of the time. And even though a network has a ton of viruses on it, so does the network you're on right now - "genius" lol. P2P - That means person to person. There's no centralized servers holding the viruses. So all you have to do to prevent viruses is to network w/ reliable people that you know. And download the files that you already know to be legit and virus free. There are tons of ways to check this before you do a download.

I've been using p2p networks for a decade and have never had problems w/ viruses. Using p2p , especially of the bit-torrent variety actually helps w/ cost of bandwidth if you're distributing music or videos. It all depends on how you use the software to make your p2p connections. If you set your options and permissions in limewire right, then you'll have no problems.

In fact, most of the videos that you see around here from the "gurus" use the same p2p technology that limewire uses.

Gary, Both Michael and myself have said that the program Limewire itself is fine, that it's the users trying to steal material out there that isn't legal that get the viruses and malware from Limewire.

Bit torrent sites are used mainly to disctribute illegal material. Having said that I am sure that there is someone out there that will say that isn't true, that there are legitimate bit torrent sites. Maybe so, but most are not legit, just like most P2P programs are used for illegal activity.

it has nothing to do with the technology used. limewire is just a GUI

its the gnutella network. limewire connects to the gnutella network exclusively.

I know you think you know what you're talking about...but so do the other people that use limewire and then have their computer practically implode from virus activity...but they can't figure out why.

And its not 'believing what I want'

Peer-to-peer (p2p) file sharing client LimeWire has admitted that security is an ingoing issue for users of the Gnutella file sharing network.
"Viruses and spam continue to be a problem on the Gnutella network," a spokesperson for the company told Computerworld Australia following the announcement that it had signed AVG to integrate its anti-virus and anti-spyware protection into LimeWire's paid-for file sharing application, LimeWire Pro.
its what the guys who actually run, administer and maintain that very network you are trying to dl from know for fact.

Lets see...there's you, who thinks you know what you're doing with your massive decade of using p2p.

Then there's me, with a comp sci degree a bunch of microsoft certs and who makes a living fixing problems with machines because of viruses that come from gnutella networks telling you you're wrong.

...and then there's gnutella networks themselves telling you you're wrong.

    hmm...who is probably wrong here....

Wow i've downloaded 40-50 or so songs from limewire over the last 2 years now I've found it it is not legit and I've been involved in piracy. Really need to get out more.

I'll think I'll settle for listening to music on youtube and buying it if it is really good.

Out of curiosity, is it pirating if you get music from friends who ripped cd's???

did you know that when Napster first came out, they asked all the record companies if tey wanted to sell their music through Napster.

    They all siad NO.

They believed that they had a trapped market and that they could continue to abuse their customers with the high prices they were selling CDs at. 30 year old Beatles CDs were still selling at $30 a pop.

So Napster went ahead any way a created a culture of piracy that is still widely accepted on the net today. The music industry is still trying to beat this, through prosecutions and heavy penalties. They are still trying to get their money back.

In the last ten years CD sales have been dropping by half each year.

The problems with this is that artist do lose money for their songs.

However, there is a benefit for consumers. Artist no long have the oppertunity to sit on their bug fat butts and make $80 million per CD and never tour. Now days they ahve to go back out on the raod and perform like real musicians again.

The music industry needs to change further to ensure that they are keeping up with the demands of the consumers. Broadband technology is having a major impact and will only make things worse. They need to be proactive and not reactive.

Untill they do they will continue to loose money and people will keep on stealing music.
