Russian Rocket Hangs In Mid-Air!

It really does!

Although only for a split second.

I don't know why, but I've always loved watching rocket launches and I particularly like the one below. It's a Dnepr rocket, used to launch satellites, and is based on a Russian ICBM called SS-18 Satan by NATO.

It's interesting because, like an ICBM, it is literally popped out of the ground like a champagne cork by an explosive charge and then hangs in the air, 60 feet up, for a split second, before the motors actually kick in. You can see it in slow motion at about the 40 second mark.

Just thought other rocket geeks might be interested.

Cool video, Thomas! I have always had an interest in rockets. Here is a trailer for the movie "October Sky". You might enjoy watching the movie. It's about Homer Hickam who grew up in Coalwood, West Virginia and ended up working for NASA. The movie is based on the book "The Rocket Boys".

I'm having problems with terminology here, Tommy -even if only for a few seconds.

When I think Rocket, I think of "goes at amazing speeds". We might need new terminology for a rocket that just hangs there.

I've always been a rocket geek, closet one though. I used to
make them when I was a kid. I used the old Estes rocket motors
    and bought their kits.

A little while back I was in a hobby shop and checking out the
rockets. That was the first time in 40 yrs I looked at rocket kits.
I'm sure some things must have changed, but it seemed a lot
hasn't. Understandable, though. It's a tube with fins. lol.

For some weird reason I'm always mesmerized by rocket launches.
    Night launches are the coolest.
