The times and Sunday times (UK based newspapers with websites) are going to charge to read the news online!!

Pay for the news

Would you ever pay to read news online?

They are trying to do the same thing here. From what i gathered, the reason that the papers are starting to do this is because news sources like AP are starting to charge something like an access fee to their sites where the news comes from

Yeah, certain sites have been charging for their news for a while now.

It would be interesting to see some figures on how its going for them - are many people taking up these news services?

Personally i wouldn't pay for the sort of news that the Times and Sunday times publish - surely sites like the BBC will essentially be providing the same content but for free.

        • are these murdoch papers ? he made it clear a few months back that he felt threatened by google and was going to restrict his online content from google searches and charge for it, so maybe this is the start of it.

no, i wouldn't pay for news content online and i don't know anyone else who would. sounds like a flawed strategy.

            Yes they are.

I can see it working for specialised content such as the Wall Street Journal and sites aimed at professionals such as doctors, lawyers, engineers, accountants, etc., but for general news I can't see it working at all.

The big winners will be the BBC, ABC in Australia, CBC in Canada and similar sites.

On a different but not entirely unrelated note, the ABC is going to launch a range of 24 hour digital free to air TV stations so that will also put a dent in Murdoch's Foxtel set up.

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.
