I need only about 4-6 hours of sleep except when I have sex. Then I can sleep for up to 9 hours. Men release norepinephine, serotonin, oxytocin, vasopressin, nitric oxide (NO), and the hormone prolactin during sex. Prolactin is what makes you sleepy. I'm not sure what the other hormones do, but I'm sure they are important too. My wife releases other hormones that affect her sleep patterns, but I am the main cause of her sleep deprivation.

7 hours. I sleep 7 hours every night unless I'm sick. No matter when I go to sleep, I get up 7 hours later without the use of an alarm clock. If I am sick I sleep for at least 7 hours, and possibly up to 16, but for that I have to be really, really sick. I can get by with around 5 hours, but I crash early and hard when I do that.

6 hours sleep a day is what I get, usually less. I need more. After several days, I tend to crash, sleep and the alarm clock will not be able to wake me. Before I crash, there are warning signs, mainly headaches from sleep deprivation. This one builds up and after a day or two of this sleep becomes the only alternative. I try not to drink any headache medicine as it is not good to mix with my hypertension medicine.

Besides that, if I can get a two hour nap anytime between lunch and dinner, I'm okay.

But I guess, a long uninterrupted sleep is what's really needed if you want your juices flowing. Short sleep is not healthy. Specially since it deprives the body of REM sleep. Or is it the other way around, where the lack of REM-type sleep is not healthy and makes for a lousy day.

Yup, you guessed it, one of those days.

Usually, I had only 5-6 hours of sleep each night. I know that’s not enough. So I always try to have at least 8-10 hours sleep for at least 2 days in a week to give my health a boost.
But then when I tried sleeping for more than 10 hours, I felt so tired. When I slept for like 3-4 hours, I feel fine though light-headed, weird really.
*yawn* I think I’ll go to sleep now so I can get that 8 hours again

I have to admit I work best on 3-4 hours of sleep. I tend to get really motivated and "in the groove" from 1-4 a.m. when the house is quiet and kids are asleep.

Experts say that the older you get...the less sleep you need.

I sleep around 4-5 hours on the average. If I had a choice...I would sleep for 8 hours!

May be the older you get, the faster your body knows that you will be dying soon and be sleeping for a very long time. Your body starts demanding that you stay up more?

It does not matter how much I sleep at night. What is important is that I get to take a nap during the day.

I work 12.5hr days from 1730-0600 on those days I average around 8 hrs (no life). Then my first day off when I get home at 0630 i will sleep for about 4hrs then try to go back to a day schedule for my family and g/f. On my days off I always seem to get up at about 0900 regardless of what time I goto bed (7-10hrs). Then my last day off before I go back to work I will stay up from the time I get up (around 0900) until the next morning about 0600. This is pretty average for me.

I feel the best when I get 9 hours of sleep, but since I started working on the Internet, I am awake thinking about all the things I need to do to get my business up and running! I'm hoping I can get to a point where I don't feel like I'm climbing a huge mountain with all the information I'm having to absorb! Maybe then I'll get back to my 9 hours!

I usually get 4 to 5 hours of sleep during weekdays. And during weekends, if possible, I always try to get more as much as I can. And although I have been like this for a number of years, I still feel deprived. Thanks to whoever discovered coffee and invented those energy drinks, they have been a great help to me.

I used to sleep over 9 hours a day, sometimes more than 12 hours. I blame it all on me going out until the wee hours of the morning, sometimes grabbing breakfast and watching the boob tube up until 9am the next day. And then I would wake up around 6pm or sometimes beyond 9pm and then do something online or go out and hang out with fellow night owls who do nothing but drink, smoke, and hook up with alcoholics. And then the long process of tweaking that body clock when you have meetings by Monday or just plain stupidity to oversleep again even if you try sleeping by 12am, which would be the equivalent of an afternoon siesta. And then you realize you are in another time zone and that means someone out there is doing his or her own version of a bad sleeping habit, which will affect you when you go chatting away over business or personal stuff with that person. Worm eats early bird again, and then you doze off.

Should get eight hours per night, but nobody has mentioned numbers even close to that.

Medical studies are showing that eight hours of nightly sleep is the number needed to allow your body time to recuperate and restore itself from your daily demands.

It's different for everyone, so the studies may not amount to much.

However much you are sleeping (and 6-8 hours likely is good advice), make sure your room is pitch dark--even a little bit of light can throw off your ability to produce melatonin--a naturally occurring hormone required for healthy immune function, blood sugar regulation and keeping your circadian sleep rhythms in check.

        Time for bed!

I get a consistent 7hrs myself. I work weird hours..11am til like 3am, with breaks of course. It took about a year for me to find the best hours for me to work, and get past the fact it is ok to actually take an hour nap once in a while!
I've been self employed for 8yrs and whether it is 4hrs or 8hrs, I work with what is needed for me to function the best I can.

Lately I wasn't able to sleep more than 7 to 8 hours a night. I guess that's not that bad and some might think it's absolutely ok. But in my opinion I have to sleep 8 hours a day (exactly 8 hours) to get a good night sleep and to be as productive as possible.
