Hey Steven if you're talking about that fake windows security trojan the best thing I've found is MalwareBytes @ malwarebytes.org. I've also had good success with SpyBots Search and Destroy @ safer-networking.org as well.

Steve, I don't know if you wanted someone to do it for you or help doing it yourself, but the instructions on this page: How to remove Advanced XP Defender (Removal Instructions) ...look fairly easy to follow.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

Steven, read my post on how to get rid of a virus that Gordon Chandler had recently, My directions will work with your problem too I am willing to bet.
Edit: Steven, if you want you can call me and I can walk you through it. Malwarebyte should run and it should fix it.

Okay, my PC is essentially trashed. Fortunately, due to some smarts on
my part, I can "manually" get things running.

      1. I tried to run the mbam.exe and it wouldn't run. So...

      2. I did a system restore to yesterday. I'd done one before and it worked
fine so I figured that would solve the problem. It did. It got rid of the
      Maleware. But...

      3. I have a new problem. All my program associations are gone. For
example, I go to my desktop and click on Word and it asks me what
program I want to open this with. It asks me this for everything, including
Firefox. I click on the program association and go to check off "Always
Use This" but that box is grayed out and I can't select it. So every time
I want to run something, I have to essentially find the file on my PC and
      click "Run"

I can essentially keep things running and stay in business, but for all
practical purposes, my PC is trashed. I can't do a reinstall now because
I have too much to do. Plus, tax day is coming up soon.

At the end of the month (usually around the 24th) I'll be all done with
my work (I usually take all of the last week of the month off) and I'll do
a complete reinstall. It was long overdue anyway.

In the meantime, if anybody knows of a way I can get my program
associations back to normal (I'll go do a search online when I get a chance)
so I don't have to waste so much time, I'd be grateful. Even my system
restore asks what program I want to run and I have no idea where to
      even look for that exe.

Anyway, thanks for any help you can give me.

If I ever catch the SOB who put me through all this, I will be put in jail
for making his life a holy hell.

DO you have an OS installation disk? If so you can do an "repair" install .

I had one. At least I'm sure I did, but I can't find it. I've found everything
      else but.

      Figures.

Oh well, I've set up shortcuts so that all I have to do now is right click
and choose "start" and the program will start. But if I want to use any of
      my system tools, I'm screwed.

In the meantime, I'm not shutting down my PC this month until I do a
      reinstall.

Been through this before and I'm sure I'll be through it again thanks to
the *******s on the Internet who have nothing better to do than make
other people's lives a holy hell.

Like they say, payback is a bitch.
