I know that you are sitting on a crosswire of subduction zones and prone to large earthquakes and in the last 4 years that I've been tracking earthquakes I've seen Indonesia practically shaking to rubble for months at a time. There are some volcanoes that are pretty active around there, too. The coast line is depleted enough in spots that a tsunami will kill hundreds of thousands. The mud volcano is still eating villages. The company that drilled that has turned up to be responsible despite their lame excuses for it but I don't know what your gov is doing about it.

I know the poor of your country are pretty muchly being pushed to some very inhospitable terrain to live - and many don't. You are also losing thousands of hectacres of land each year to desertification.

    Aren't ya glad ya asked?

^^ Girl you did your homework.

On the flip side though, they do have some of the best surf-able waves (Bali) with girls that are hot/exotic.

Had a government that was overthrown in a CIA backed coup (see "The Year Of Living Dangerously" - one of Mel Gibson's earliest movies). This led to one of the most corrupt regimes (under President Suharto) on earth bleeding the wealth of the country and its people dry. Now run by a former four star general who is the first democratically elected Preesident. It has the world's largest Muslim population, but is officially a secular state.

Rich in minerals, oil, gas and other natural resources, it consists of over 17,000 islands including Bali, Aceh, Java and Sumatra. It covers just under 2 million square kilometres and has over 200 million people that speak over 700 different languages. It also has over 150 active volcanos including Krakatoa.

It was one of the nations that got hit by the 2004 tsunami, and had terrorist bombings in Bali in 2002 and 2005.

It is (geograhically at least) Australia's closest neighbour.

That's just off the top of my head.

      No way! lol

I remember that movie with Mel Gibson. So that was really about
Indonesia? Did you see that movie? The setting was in South or
Central America. Although what you described seems to be a
template you could apply to many places where the CIA's finest
      did their work.

Edit: That's not right, I'm thinking of a movie with Gene Hackman,
he's a journalist and gets killed by gov't troops. Nevermind.

I did see that movie with Mel Gibson, though. That was a good
      movie.

        Yes way.

Living Down Under we got about our neighbour to the north in high school. Obviously the Bali bombings and tsunami happened long after I finished high school, but the rest was taught to us..

And yes TYOLD was about Sukarno's overthrow:

You folks had another 7 mag quake on the 6th, too -- 7.7 mag to be exact. I hope that it was in a relatively unpopulated section of your country.

I know that the Indonesian word for monkey is Monyet and Tiger is Harrimal (possibly spelled wrong).

The Indonesian name Ms is Bu

And I know how to sing Happy Birthday in Indonesian!

That's about all off the top of my head - my kids learn Indonesian language and about the country at school.
